Root [International] Using CyanogenMod Installer - Will it wipe everything? + Nandroid Backup

TZoBit

Lurker
I hate touchwiz to pieces. I can't be bothered to get Cyanogenmod the manual way, but luckily there was CyanogenMod Installer.

The only problem is, I have tons of data on it, my SD is half full and the phone only has around 600MB left. CyanogenMod Installer tells me that if i continue with the process, it will wipe everything. However, my friend, who used a HTC One V with the Installer, said it wiped nothing. My first question is, does it wipe anything if you are using an S3? (i9300).

It will be pretty annoying if it does, thanks to MTP (took years with USB to transfer all data).

Also, in case I don't like pure android (doubt it) and would like to go back to TouchWiz, i've heard the easiest way to go back to stock touchwiz is to restore from nandroid backup. I'm fine with making the backup, but once again I have no space as it will back up everything, I've read somewhere that you can save the nandroid backup directly to the pc (how would i go about doing this too?). Or should I simply get a 16GB SD as they are quite cheap.

Thank you.

-also sorry theres so many questions but the installer isnt going to use cyanogenmod 11 is it?

I have no idea how the installer works or how safe it is so i recommend doing it manually. Just use Odin to flash a custom recovery, get an SD card and make a nandroid backup, do a data wipe in recovery (it will only remove apps), then flash CM (cm11 is best).
By doing it manually youll understand more and if you get a bootloop or anything youll know how to fix it instead of panicking :)

Thanks, its that easy? Are there any additional steps?

Also, are you sure it only wipes apps? I read a little more and it said it will wipe everything

Those are basically the steps mate. Check out the all things root forum.
I dont know what kind of wipe the installer does but in a custom recovery it mainly wipes apps and their data. That has to be done when flashing a rom.
I do it all the time and all my pics, music, files etc are fine :)

I used the installer and LOVED it. The whole process of rooting, installing CWM, and installing CM11 couldnt have been easier.

(Admittedly, I used it because I was concerned about trying to root after doing the OTA to 4.3, and wasnt sure what effect Knox would have, etc)

Anyways, you'll lose your apps, app data, and defaults. You wont lose things on your SD card like music and photos.

Good luck!

Sloheim does it give you a chance between rooting and wiping to use titanium backup to back up apps or does the actual rooting happen by installing CM?
Id just go the manual route after installing cwm tbh so you dont have to wipe the whole device

I think the installer actually wipes your internal. Don't quote me on that since I never used it. It usually should to avoid any further issue with legacy files.

No, it doesn't give you the choice.

Personally, I took it as an opportunity to wipe my phone clean after 18 months and start with a fresh install of everything.
