Is android 2.2 ok?

Will current and new apps work for version 2.2?

I was planning to get a HTC and the only thing holding me back is the android version installed.

Welcome to the forum :)

Many current apps will work with 2.2, and many new ones will do so. But not all, so if there's a particular app that's important to you you should check their compatibility.

Android 2.2, aka Froyo, is ancient by Android standards. You could possibly find that apps might not be compatible because there are so few phones out there that are active and run Froyo. Some might work, but due to OS and probably hardware limitations, you likely find many that don't.

I think the last distribution chart put Froyo at like .1% of all android devices.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums. :)

It's very likely that many current apps and games will not work with 2.2 Froyo. You'd have to check the individual apps. Also an HTC that still has 2.2 is probably quite old now, 3-4 years most likely. Android and smart-phones have changed and advanced quite a lot in that time. It could be like trying to run current PC software on an old Windows 98 machine.

Yeah everything the guys have said and if you can put gingerbread 2.3 on it then that will help. 2.3 seems to be the lower limit for some apps

2.2 was released nearly 4 years ago. As such, 2.2 will be missing all of the leaps and bounds android has made over the years that in all honesty is what makes android what it is today.

If you let us know what your budget is, we may be able to offer some better alternatives.

Wow jellybeans is doing pretty well. lmao at honeycomb :D

Likely because Honeycomb was tablet only, and also by the time I started seeing tablets in widespread general usage most of them were on ICS 4.0. It was really ICS that kicked off Shenzhen into full drive for cheapo tablets I think.

thanks all for the responses! :)

my budget is ideally $150 and the htc inspire is good enough. 1ghz cpu

Do you think it can be upgraded to ver. 4? idk if the higher versions require much more cpu power.

I see it says htc inspire is upgradable to 2.3 on gsmarena website. if it cant go higher i wouldnt wanna do homebrew if its too complicated, never done it before.

I would go up to $175-$200 if really necessary.

Is the motorola Moto G available for your carrier? Thats an excellent cheap phone on the latest android version

I heard the Moto G comes with kit kat and there's compatibility issues with kit kat

I'm on at&t in the US.

yeah.. the moto g is only $30 more so I'll prob. go for it

Cool id recommend it. The people i chat to who own it, love it. Battery, performance and near-stock android :)
Definately dont buy a phone on 2.2 unless you really have to.
What kind of compatibility problems do you mean mate?

You'll find much less compatibility issues with KitKat than you would with froyo. ;)

And any issues you encounter will be fixed as time goes on, whereas with the inspire it'll be more and more incompatible as time goes on.

Go with the moto G. :D

If the HTC is used it probably already has 2.3 installed, if it's new it will upgrade itself after you activate it.

But for a new phone with a $150 - $200 budget I'd recommend a Moto G as others have said. For used - you can get newer phones with 4.0+ for under $200.

Android 2.2 isn't THAT bad, it is butt-ugly (white notification area, cartoony icons) but it's pretty stable, supports the 'new' Google Play apps (music, Play Store, Maps, etc) so the essentials are all there. Amazon App Store (my preferred market) also works fine. however, if you're seeing 'new' devices using Android 2.2, it's apparently not up to spec hardware wise, or it's some budget cheap thing that won't last long. my last Android 2.2 device was a Samsung Galaxy Precedent, a halfway decent phone but i promptly rooted and upgraded to Android 2.3, which to me comparing the two is the more stable, better with RAM management, and the notification area is much better. Android 2.2 and below's notification bar looked too much like a horrible copy of iOS from back when.
