sudden, random battery drain?

last night, when I went to bed my phone had about 35 percent battery left in it. I set it to airplane mode, and went to bed. I had closed off everything I was doing by long pressing the center button and clearing everything. When I woke up in the morning the phone was completely dead, as in I had to plug it in to be able to power it on.

this has never happened. The past 6 weeks I've had this phone, anytime I've gone to bed at night, when I wake up in the morning there has been practically no change in the battery percentage. Usually I will set it to airplane mode and when I wake up it will be at the exact same percentage it was when I went to sleep. Or other times I will leave it with LTE on, and if the percentage changes at all, it only drops by one or two %.

can anyone explain what might be causing this?
 
I use an app called watchdog light that alerts me when an app is misbehaving and using too many resources. So I can identify the apps causing me battery drain or lag. I also use an app called greenify to hibernate apps to keep them from running in background without having to freeze them. Since then my battery still has 99-100 percent charge after being in standby for 8 hours without use while I sleep.
Also setting->battery, then click on the top option to bring up battery stats to get all kinds of battery info including power saving tips.
 
I will check it out, thanks. I just find it bizarre that normally the battery percentage doesn't change it all, and last night it drained completely down to nothing.

If you battery still drains while it is idle
then monitor wakelock usage, it is the main reason how the battery drains when it is not being used

A wake lock is caused by some service or rogue app keeping your device awake when it should be deep sleeping - or being in a state of low power consumption.

You can check for wakelocks with a number of apps such as betterbatterystats, gsam battery monitor, wakelock detector ect

BBS is my personal favorite, but it is a paid application
