Wow you are lucky, im regretting tmobile overall as i only get edge inside my house. on sprint if my home net went out i could toggle on tethering and connect everything in a breeze, with the light i have to jump through so many hoops to tether and even then the speeds are subpar at best :/.

Nice job, it's working great on my Light :) I'm adding this to my video review on youtube, first line folks see when they view it, great work, and thanks for all the hard work :)

does anyone know of any custom roms that are compatible with the galaxy light?? i dont know all too much about this root thing and dont want to brick my phone. Any help would be AWESOME. Thanks.

I don't think there are any custom ROMs yet, or know if anybody's working on one or porting one over. It's only been 2 weeks or so since the root exploit was figured out. Plus, for reasons I don't understand, this phone hasn't garnered much popularity yet. The Moto G seems to be getting all the cheap-phone attention. Probably because the Light is only available with T-Mobile, whereas pretty much any provider has a Moto G that works on it.

Total newbie here... I really want to root my Galaxy Light, but I'm wondering... if I root it, will it inhibit my phone from automatically updating to Kit Kat over the air (when it does roll out)? Should I wait on the root?

P.S Thank you for all your hard work Shabbypenguin, Chainfire, and Mattlgroff.

Yes it will.

This method flashes a custom kernel, and if you try to do an update, you'll get a message saying "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available". Doing a factory reset DOES NOT revert to the old kernel, and your phone will remain rooted.

I honestly don't think it's a big deal. 4.4 KitKat doesn't really add a whole heck of a lot of features (and in fact removes some). 4.3 didn't add much either that's of great use to this particular phone. KitKat boasts that it works better on older or lower-end devices with only 512MB RAM, but that doesn't really apply to this phone, which is snappy and smooth and only gets bogged down by the most intense of 3D games. I'd seriously doubt if there were any noticeable performance improvements after a KK update.

Besides, once 4.4 does roll out, there will likely be a method found to port it over. The biggest hurdle in discovering a root method for this phone was that there was no source code available, and no prior OTA updates. When an OTA update is released, developers can "capture" it, which allows them to use their computers to dig into the code. Which brings not only the possibility of updating previously-rooted phones to KK, but also the possibilities of custom ROM ports and other developments.

@ Shabbypenguin - I rooted using the one click method. As a result checking for updates shows the "This device has been modified" message. Would it be safe to flash the stock kernel now that I've used the one-click method? Or would I need to go through the entire manual process? Or is it best to leave well enough alone?

Thanks

once you are rooted you can restore back. my kernel just merely checks for root on bootup and then roots you if it sees you arent rooted.

against my better judgement, ive released twrp on shabbypenguin.com.

Hi, the Shabbypenguin procedure worked fine on my version MJ4 galaxy light, however, only after updating my PC to have newer samsung drivers to recognize the galaxy light phone when plugged into the USB. So i think he should add a "step 0), update the PC drivers" step, with maybe a shortcut on how to get them (i used the drivers.zip file from the modaco site from a post in the xda-developers forum, but i can't post a link yet (first post)). Turns out i had downloaded the wrong superuser program (meant to use "supersu" as per step 1, but by accident installed Superuser
by ClockworkMod - February 10, 2014). however the procedure still worked, but then i had 2 Superuser apps on my device which i guess is not recommended. So i reinstalled the supersu app and told it to uninstall the other Superusers and it did. Glad to get Titanium Backup again! thanks to the Shabbypenguin!

I have been trying for the better half of two hours to get twrp installed and just can't seem to get it. I have tried from cwm, adb, cant get fastboot to work on the device so havent tried that. Any suggestions? Thanks

EDIT: Please ignore my dumb question, I figured it out. Wasn't paying attention to the extension of the file. I was extracting and trying to manually install it. Then I realized the tar extension and just boot into download mode and used odin.

just created an account on this forum to say thanks Shabbypenguin!!! Been wanting to root my galaxy light for a while, it worked without a hitch. The only thing I was confused about was the step you said to load one click, I finally figured you meant open it on windows, connected my galaxy light in download mode, hit start and was rooted in 30 seconds, thanks again
Luke:)

K, thanks. I was just checkin back to see if there were any new ones.

Thanks for creating the root for this though. I appreciate it. Im a newbie at the whole phone root thing qnd im trying to learn about under/overclocking now. I have setCPU on my phone but im not sure what the min/max mHz's mean. Can you point me in the right direction for some reading? Id appreciate it. Thanks again for the root!

without a custom kernel that has changed frequency tables you arent going to overclock. with setcpu you can lower the max setting for your device to conserve battery. just lower the max on there and it will force the cpu to run lower than what you set it to.

I'll add my thanks to you Shabby. I easily rooted my MJ4 and also have TWRP
installed. Phone works great (though I took awhile trying to figure out which
was the better busybox installer - still not sure but wound up with
Busybox X).

Question. Has any one tried Xposed Framework and GravityBox[JB] on this
phone? Wondering how far I can take this.

Edit: Notes for Gravity says it might not work w/TouchWiz phones. I assume that includes the Light. Would Wanam be the alternative (at the Play Store & states it's compatible w/TouchWiz phones)?

Wanam is awesome. I also use StatusBar Mods SGS and XBatteryThemer, and a couple other small tweaks.

With this phone's small screen, status bar and notification menu space is limited and precious. You can get rid of useless icons in the status bar like input method, Smart Stay, headphones, etc. You can also remove useless notifications like full battery, headphones being plugged in and that horrible, horrible "recommended apps" notification when headphones are plugged in.

Tweak away!

Installed Wanam Xposed but I see no way to disable the stock quick settings and substitute custom ones. I have tried Gravity Box also and same - even though it allows customizing quick toggles they never show.

Has anyone been able to substitute custom quick toggles for the Samsung ones?

Since I posted my question I got too busy to check back.
Since then I've played with the above as well as XBlast Tools among others.
Been having a bit of fun.

Regarding XBatteryThemer all icons worked except for the little droid guy (the only one that wasn't free).

Hi there,

Can someone help me out with access to the Odin One-Click root files for the Galaxy Light? All files that I download (tried different browsers) from shabbypenguin.com are 0 bytes. I'd also love the recovery and stock files if at all possible.

Many thanks in advance. And thanks Shabbypenguin for your hard work. Oh, and if I can get access to all the intact files, I'll send a little thank-you gift to Shabby.

You are teh second person to say that something was wrong with my site today. ill upload to mega for backup purposes and change the links around. im going to pull the files from this and rework the guide as with the new update its better to root using custom recovery than a kernel.

Hi I went to your website and all the files on there appear to download 0 kb. Was hoping for an update as to when you will be uploading the new root method?

Thanks so much!
