Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] VM Optimus F3 root - LG720ZV6 Update

Followed the guide posted on wikispaces by mcdojf, running v6. Once I "press any key" after plugging in my phone, the program throws some text up for a tenth of a second and closes. Tried switching between camera mode and media, have debugging mode enabled and am running as administrator in win 8. Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong?
Got this phone for my mom to be her main source of internet out in the boonies, any help to get the root running would be greatly appreciated. And thanks to everyone who already posted guides about this, you da real mvp's.

Steps should work, but do understand the frustration. Could be anything from a missed driver install to poor download of the files you need.
If having issues using the PC method I would suggest the using the saferoot app that works for the VM720.

Got it to work by trying anew on a different laptop. Everything running perfectly.
Before that I reinstalled everything and tried again, no dice. Tried the apk and it wouldn't start no matter what I did.
But anyways got it all functioning with wifi tether and am sending it off to my mum out in the sticks where there is 4G LTE but no landline internet, somehow. Hooray technology.

My wife and I both have Optimus F3s, which I had rooted with Motochopper. Before I saw anything about the problems with V6, she had run the update and soft-bricked her phone. I used the recommended unbrick procedure, and flashed V5 onto her phone, let it update over-the-air to V6, and re-rooted it using Saferoot.
It worked for a time, but became less and less stable, finally beginning to reboot randomly. By yesterday, it was crashing as soon as it rebooted.
I tried a soft reset, and re-rooted with saferoot, but the symptoms reappeared after an hour or so. In desperation, I performed a hard factory reset, and didn't re-root. The phone again began crashing or hanging after an hour or so of operation.
At that point, I thought the phone must have developed a hardware problem. But I had one more thing to try -- using the unbrick procedure to flash V6 directly onto the phone.
I did that, and the phone has been stable now for a number of hours. So that seems to have fixed it. If it's still stable tomorrow, I'll re-root with Saferoot.
I don't know what caused the instability, but I hope this helps someone in the same situation.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but I'm a little confused as what to do. I currently have a rooted V5, but I'd like to update.
Do I need to un-root before I force the update as in the OP?
Assuming I can force the update w/o un-rooting, will I need to re-root after the update anyway?

If you are rooted chances are it will softbrick. I would suggest a nandroid backup before doing anything. From there you can try an Ota root or look through forum for v7 zip update by xclusive36.
Believe most that have been rooted on v5 have softbricked. So do full nandroid backup and try method you think will work best for you. If you softbrick then I would suggest following unbridled guide using v7 bin file.
You must go from v5 to v6 to v7 when UPGRADING. If you use the unbrick/flash tool method you can skip v6 but you will start clean/wipe.
