Evo Touch Screen

Okay, if you don't like some of the absolutely stupid questions a newbie asks, then stop reading NOW...

My wife and I are looking at the Evo. It will be the first touch screen either one of us has owned. My wife has long finger nails. Will she get by with touching the screen with her nail or will she need to actually use her finger? This could be a deal breaker for her. :eek:
 
There's been interesting developments with this touchscreen. No one knows for sure yet, but the incredible just got turned down for fingernails on the touchscreen and the EVO is said to have the same touchscreen (from the same company, Atmel) as the incredible, so the EVO probably won't be able to have fingernail input.
 
Her finger nails would do just fine, I would however put a screen protector to preserve the screen from scratches from a harder objects such as finger nails. :)
 
i read in one of the threads here today...
the EVO will have the new touch screen sensor tech. It will be able to handle: finger tips, finger nails, gloves, and a stylus. :D

I have also heard that the EVO will have the same tempered glass technology as the Hero. Believe me when I say, the hero screen is one tough screen. very hard to scratch. Search youtube for Hero Screen test. :eek:

No, nails do not work because the screen requires the heat from your finger to recognize the touch.

The Inc and the EVO have the same screen, and my Inc does not read stylus', fingernails, or fingers covered in gloves.

Now, of course, I would be surprised (as well as many others) that the EVO actually have the maXTouch screen that has been demoed by Atmel...but I have a feeling that won't come true.

Since when do touch screens require heat to sense touches?

I don't know what planet you're from, but I could have sworn it was an electromagnetic charge displaced from your finger (skin) to the screen.

Glass is good as far as scratching, however drop the bugger on impact against asphalt and see Mr. Screen go bye-bye. Best bet is to get a case especially since the glass screen sits flush against the exterior body of the device, giving it an inch or half an inch of cushioning all around really wouldn't hurt.
 
It is specifically designed to accept touches from fingernails on index fingers, but not others. Hopefully your wife wasn't planning on using other fingers.

Resistive can use stylus/fingernail as well as touch but it is less accurate with touch. Also, it requires a thin layer of plastic over the screen which you may not really notice on the better devices but it makes the screen scratch easier and diminished the crispness and brightness.

Most touch devices have moved to capacitive although there is still a place for resistive in some situations. I know in eastern countries where pen/stylus input is more widely used, there are probably more buyers for capacitive screens.

They have. Read Autosuggestion's posts as well as the others here who have an Incredible. This particular touch screen (at least as implemented now) does not seem to have this hybrid capability.
 
you guys are also forgetting one big point... the actual lcd thats behind them. they do make a difference. the tft should allow for both where as the amoled may have that limitation
