Root HTC one M8 rooting issue

russtle

Newbie
I recently got a HTC one M8. I had some trouble going through the root process at first but eventually i got there. after i had said to rooting the device reset and i loaded a backup to get my stuff back. But when i used a root checker app its said my device was not rooted. I tried using apps that require a root and those didnt work either. I went through the whole process again but now when i submit my token with NTCDev and get the unlock code. i cant even flash the code even when my device is in fastboot. I cant seem to get it working. What could i have done wrong

First off Welcome To The Forums!!! :D

What we need to do is check if your bootloader was unlocked.

Make sure your phone does not have "Fastboot" checked under the "Power" menu in settings. Then power the phone down completely. Hold the volume down key and then press and hold the power button simultaneously until a white screen appears.

This is the Hboot screen. At the very top what does it say?

If it looks like this your bootloader is unlocked:

Let us know if the bootloader is unlocked, then we'll go from there. :)

Your bootloader should say "unlocked" near the top. If you already did it, you shouldn't need to redo that step. You can skip it. You can have an unlocked boot loader without root.

If you have a custom recovery already installed, skip that step too.

edit: too quick for me Granite! :)

Ninja post in full effect! :p
Help is always appreciated Chief. :)

@russtle, If you haven't checked this thread out yet, it's the best resource for the unlock / root process. Once we get past the bootloader unlock, we'll be referring to this thread to finish root. :)

It does say unlocked near the top but not tampered

Also I didn't do a custom recovery I really don't have much on the phone anything I lost I can get back in no time

Ok, so you are unlocked, you don't need to do that step.

You will need to flash a custom recovery.

Did you check out the link Granite posted above? It should be pretty easy to finish up with that. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

P.S. -- if you do ask more questions, please let everyone know which M8 you have (Verizon, Sprint/Sprint HK, GPE, etc.) Some things are different based on which phone we're talking about.

note that while following the directions in the linked thread, there is an option to temporarily boot a recovery without permantly installing it.

most folks opt to permantly install it,but that is not a requirement.

holler if you have questions :)

All i want to do is use some rooted apps which i could just use temp recovery for but most poeple use permanent cause its easier in the long run

umm,im not sure if this is a question,or a statement. :o

if its a question, yes booting a temp recovery is fine. it will let you install superuser so you can use root apps, and as long as you dont modify the stock rom, keeping the stock recovery will let you accept OTA updates(you will have to boot recovery and re-install superuser after each OTA)

installing a permanent recovery commits you to doing manual updates to your phone by installing firmware packages in bootloader, and flashing the updated rom in recovery.
