Root Help! Something really borked, tough time recovering

It doesn't turn me off. Admittedly, though not a newbie or novice to this, I don't do it as often as many of you--mainly due to time issues with my schedule.

I did re-download 1.71 full, along with 1.71 OTA and 1.80 OTA. I'm wondering if I should even bother with those, however, in light of today's events.

Those updates have worked successfully for countless others so they're OK - you just had a glitch somewhere.

Could it happen again on the re-updates?
Not very likely but nothing is impossible.

If it were me I'd go for it.

But - obviously, it's your phone and Android is all about choice.

I'll be here to help if I can when things go wrong and give my two cents, but I'm not going to sell anyone on what choices they should make. :)

Remember, you're talking to a guy who hated Jellybean so much that he went back to ICS and stayed happy for months! :D

I'll probably try them later when I get a little more time.

Before I do, however, do you recommend I just do the OTA updates, that is, going from my current 1.70 to 1.71 OTA then to 1.80 OTA?

That's how I did mine.

Mind, that's going to leave the zip updates behind in /sdcard/Download so you're going to want to toss out the clutter when you're done.

scary moments there LV :/ glad you got it sorted in the end .... EM to the rescue again ..... do you wear a cape EM? ;)

i flashed the 1.7 full - then the 1.8 ota

That leads me to a question, then. I have 1.70 full. Can I flash the 1.80 OTA zip, or is it recommended to flash 1.71 OTA followed by 1.80 OTA?

well i just did the full followed by the 1.8 ota zip - all working well here - so im guessing there is no prob doing that ...unless EM says different :D

Well, I think it's time to return this phone to Verizon. The ringer doesn't work at all. Regardless of which ring tone I choose, the phone simply will not ring. Notifications work; alarms work; other sounds work. Ringtones will not. Period.

I've adjusted the sound settings, changed ring tones, you name it. I just can't get the thing to ring.

Add in that problem with hearing conversations and I think you're doing the best thing fwiw, definitely.

Keep us posted!

The hearing issue was mostly helped by, believe it or not, your suggestion of re-positioning the phone so that the actual speaker was next to my ear canal. Now if I could only figure out the no ringer issue.

Try - settings, Apps, All, Media Storage and clear data and cache.

Everything will be borked from 15 to 30 minutes while the database rebuilds.

I'll try and report back. BTW, will I lose all my regular settings and contacts, etc.?

Edited: I'm going to first flash OTA 1.80 and just see if that makes any difference (assuming that doesn't bork things up

Just a reminder, if it even means anything, that it's not my ring tones per se that don't work; rather, it's just my incoming call ringer that doesn't work. All my notifications, alarms, and other ring tone selections work. It's just my incoming call one that doesn't work.

Yep, understood. Poor choice of words on my part, I'm literally stealing time to post lol, so... you know how that goes.

Either way, all of it ties to your media database and I've found no end of glitches cured by that one trick.

So, no crystal ball and no hard promises other than if it were my phone, I'd be giving that a shot.

Hmmm. Maybe I should try that before I upgrade to the 1.80 OTA. ☺

Just out of curiosity, what does the Media database do? What role does it play v

OK. I'll let it go till after dinner, which should be another 20 minutes or so. (I don't have to reboot it or do anything but wait, correct?) Of course, I'll know if that fixed the problem by simply having someone call me. If it doesn't ring, problem still present.

My next step then is to install stock RUU, see if the problem recurs then. If so, then it's got to be a hardware issue.

I'm wondering if a factory data reset followed by a flash of the latest full version of Viper would so anything.

On a somewhat related note, do you recall, EM, what the name of that app was that checks and verifies the md5 checksum? I remember the app's icon was an alien face superimposed over another symbol or something.
