Help is there a way for the phone to know my area code?

this kinda sucks unless someone has an answer, Any phone numbers on my last phone that were in my area code, I never had to enter it when putting in the user for the caller id to show up properly so right now I have all my number with a 631 area code not showing up on the caller id as the name because 631 is not in there number on my phone, I am in 631, I shouldn't need to put 631 before every number when I store it for it to show up properly..

ie...

in my phone I have a user, we will call her Tara, My phone and hers are 631 area codes so in my phone it says

Tara - Mobile - 555-5555
BUT when she calls, her caller id does not show her name, it just says incoming call from 631-555-5555

yea i just started putting everyones area code in, a little more trouble but not too much.
 
I think u missed the point, you dont need to dial an area code if you are calling an area code your phone number exists in, My phone is 631, I dont need to dial 631 every time i call someone in the same area code so why would I have to add 631 to all my contacts that have the same area code as me for them to show up properly in my caller id when they call me..

A sign of the times would be for the Inc. to know that a number in my phone with no area code before it is a 631 area code when the call comes in instead of it just listing the number with no name when it comes in
 
Yes, it seems a prob with 2.1. My Eris did it when I bumped up to 2.1. I have the 10 digit format in my contacts, but if I just dial the 7 digit format, no match, and vice versa. It match the 7 and 10 with the Eris @ 1.5 and almost every other phone I've had. Called VZW CS and they have no solution.
I just put the additional format only on the #'s I may shoot off that aren't on my speed dial. Hopefully an update will fix this.

Not necessarily true. As area codes are being split and new ones added, and even where that isn't the case, you need to dial the area code to call a number in the same area code you're in.

Incorrect. I have to dial the full 10 digits for ANY number I call. Whether it be from a cell phone or a landline, they switched it back in the 90s. Of course I live in suburban Massachusetts so the population density is probably higher here.
 
So you mean to tell me if your cell phone number starts with a 339 area code and you are calling someone else in a 339 area code, you still have to put the 339 before the 7 remaining digits? wow, that sucks for you guys, LOL no offense.... If so then I stand corrected, I did not know it was like that outside of L.I., NY

By me (Long Island, NY), We only have to dial 7 digits if we are dialing within the same area code, Maybe that will change in the future for L.I.. Right now Suffolk county is all 631 and so is my cell so i never have to dial 631 when calling anyone in suffolk

Hell, I live in Madison, WI which I think we'll all agree has a much less dense population and I still have to dial the area code when I call certain numbers in my area code.

Pssst... Her real name is Sara and her number is 631-666-6666...

haha... just trying to add some levity... these forums are getting too uptight...
 
We also have to dial the area code for all numbers here in PA. 215 needs 215-555-5555. Sucked when it changed years back, but it's just a natural thing now.

And I'm not trying to sound like a smartass here, but if you update the area codes in your address book to resolve the issue, you still don't have to physically dial more digits since the phone will be auto-dialing the numbers. Right?
 
correct, dialing out is not the issue because like I mentioned, I don't need to have the 631 before the number to complete a call being that my phone is also a 631 number, obviously if I am calling the city or another area code I would need the full 10 digits like 212-555-5555, the issue is the name wont come up unless I enter the actual 631 in the phone book, The iPhone was able to know that my phone was 631 therefore when a number came in the caller id worked properly whether the 631 was before it or not being that i had a 631 area code. Obviously if my phone was a 516 area code then I would need to put the 631 before all them. I understand that i can juast go through my phonebook and add the 631 to all the numbers but it's over 100 of them easily so I was trying to avoid that as being th esolution

TopShelf, THANK YOU so much, the contacts cleanup app worked perfect, already cleaned up and added 631 to all needed phone numbers.

I really appreciate all the info guys.

P.S. - I LOVE THIS PHONE
 
Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. Funny part here is that I still don't even have my Incredible. Going to pick it up tonight. I've just been so addicted to this forum reading everything that I feel like I know something. :)

Remember when they added the 781 area code to the areas around boston?? Thats when I had to start dealing with area codes for non 781 people (pretty much anyone south / west of boston at the time.
 
I moved from NJ to Lindenhurst, NY (Long Island) a few years ago. I've used to typing in the area code for the last 10 or so years, so I still do it out here on LI. I was actually surprised you don't have to do that out here.

Yeah, that was crazy times. I'm still on good ol' 508.
 
I just found this thread - I am trying to download "Contacts Clean-up" to my Thunderbolt, but I can't do it.
I downloaded Appbrain app market, then I can find the app I want, but there is no install button - my options are "Share" or "market". If I click on Share, it lets me share the barcode for the app via e-mail, etc., and if I click on market, it takes me back to the market, where I find the app, and it brings me back to the same screen, where I can't install. Any ideas??
