Any Theater Fans?

Forgive me if I missed a thread on this already. ;)

I was just curious if there are fans of live theatre, on or off Broadway (or way, way off Broadway!).

I discovered a love for the stage late in life (go back six years...I despised musicals...) and have been in a handful of shows since then. One of the great things about living in the S.F. Bay area is the wealth of theatre throughout the region. It kind of makes the traffic and earthquakes and cost of living bearable.

Anyway, I just thought I'd start a thread to see if there were other fans, whether as audience members, performers, or the all-important backstage folks. And if anyone is interested to hear about shows I've been in (or am in) I'm happy to share, but I don't want to bore anyone.

It's been ages since I've been to any sort of live theater production, not because I don't enjoy it, but it's just the way things have worked out. And I live down the coast from you, where there are more live theater productions than anywhere else [or so I've heard], including NY.

So what have you been in? And do you prefer any particular genre?

Same here, I like live theater but I can't get anyone else in my group interested. It's just not the same by yourself. I did mange to get some to go to a stage show a couple of years ago though. We saw Riders in the Sky. I guess Western music is a kind of weird choice for a guy from Boston Mass, The last actual play I saw was "Soap". That should give you some idea how long it's been.

Honestly I can't stand it. We would be forced to watch the nightmare of school plays and all I just always been lost and uninterested.

The talk of the theater brings back fond memories. I ran the lights and sound for all productions and stage performances while attending high school. I took great pride in being involved with some very talented individuals. There is a great love among those involved in theater. It has been more than 40 years since I last set a light scheme but many of my best friendships were formed at that time and are still enjoyed today. It's a close group that is involved to put forth a production. It's magic to be part of that group.

Thanks for your interest. You must live in the LA area, because there wouldn't be a huge theatre base anywhere between here and there.
Yes, indeed--I'm in the lovely San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles.

If you're going to be up in the bay area anytime from early November to early December, you can come see me in a featured role in "OKLAHOMA!"...I might even be able to find you a discounted pair of tickets. ;)
Hey, you never know! I LOVE the musical "Oklahoma!" AND I've been wanting to take Amtrak California up to the Bay Area. My birthday is December 8th, and it'd be kind of cool to go up there as a birthday present to myself. :hmmmm2:

I really haven't found a preference yet. I truly enjoy the singing and physicality of musicals (though I'm not and never have been a dancer, the choreographers always give you work to do of varying degrees of difficulty based on your interest and ability, sometimes they put me into the more challenging numbers and I'm sure I get a goofy grin on my face once I start to get them down!), but there is a simple honesty to straight theatre that I really can't describe. (Last year I did "Rainmaker" in a cast of seven, three of whom were Shellie award winners and that was an amazing experience.)
It sounds like you're really having fun with this. Good for you! And it's great that you're even tackling roles that require some dancing. The choreographers aren't going to demand of you more than you're capable of doing, and trained to do. So have fun with it. :) I used to be really involved in the ballet world...shoot, my daughter practically GREW UP at the studio where I took classes every day. But, alas, I haven't even been to a ballet production in eons now... *sigh*

That said, I do avoid auditioning for shows that have stronger adult themes because I'd like to be able to invite any of my friends without being concerned that if they bring their parents or kids they might be embarrassed, etc.
Soooooo...you have no plans to be in "Hair"?

This thread brings back good memories from my college years. been an active member of the theater org in my school since i was a freshman. then, i directed my original play in my second year and became president of the org in my junior year.

Yeh I'm a very long way from Broadway hahaha. I did see a couple of Mongolian grasslands culture plays last year. In Xilinhot the only western musical that anyone seems to have heard of is Sound Of Music, and Do-Re-Mi is often sung in schools and at drunken karaoke parties.

You ever take part in school plays? All I ever did was playing Mike Teevee along with sis playing Veruca Salt in a school production of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. It was awful.

Mum would sometimes take me and sis to see professional productions of things like Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, etc. and I did enjoy them, that was when I was still at school and college, late '70s early '80s.

About 12 years ago I had a couple of months working in London, on expenses and staying in a hotel, so I did go to see some of the famous West End shows, Cats, Les Miserables and Phantom Of The Opera really because I had nothing else to do. Don't really care for the whole shows, fall to sleep sometimes, but I do like some of the songs.

You ever take part in school plays?

Only once, when I was roped into playing the part of The Stage Manager in Our Town. Until then I'd been resolutely backstage doing lighting/sound, and I directed a few amateur/student productions afterwards.

I've also appeared on stage with Scottish Ballet (as the proverbial "2nd Spear Bearer") which was an education to a naive 16 year-old. Those myths about ballet dancers....? Don't believe them!
