Help Google maps using a lot of my battery juice?

In my Battery use "what has been using the battery" deal...it says the following:

Android System 67%
Maps 31%
Cell standby 2%

Should the Maps be that high??

Yes, because its not just the maps, it is also utilizing the gps as well. Those two combined will eat your battery quickly.

Is there a quick way to turn off the GPS function then? I've looked in the settings but can't find how to turn it off.

Settings<location. There should be 3 boxes there, if you uncheck the bottom 2 your GPS will be off. But you really shouldn't need them off. The phone only uses GPS when an app needs it, such as when you're using Google maps. I keep all boxes checked and still get good battery life. If you're using Google maps though, your battery will die fast.

Long press on an open area of one of your seven screens, select widget, and either select the power widget or one of the HTC goggles. I prefer the power widget as you can control brightness, WiFi, gps, Bluetooth, and network control all from the one widget.

what he said :D

Maps shouldn't be using GPS (or battery) unless you are actively using it.

I have seen Maps occasionally not "behave" when sent to the back. I usually check before bed to make sure it is not churning away.

Turning GPS on/off is a workaround (and not a good one).
