Root Rooted Lollipop Update Q&A

Rxpert83

Dr. Feelgood
Hey guys, I'm moving root-related chatter out of the general forum to keep things clean for those who do not root.

I will fill this full of useful info about the update as time allows :0

EDIT1:
So there are some huge changes to the rooted lollipop world. First of all, we know the from the Nexus 9 the OTA update system now checks the entire system and treats it as 1 thing rather than checking each individual thing it patches. You used to be able to get away with accepting the OTA while rooted but ANY modifications to /system will now cause the OTA to fail, even root itself**.

**Note - this is currently not the case for the nexus 5 for this update, but may be going forward. Thanks for the heads up jj14x. The nexus 5 is currently still checking each patch individually.

For those flashing the factory images, its suggested to fully decompress everything and flash each one manually (fastboot flash X Xfilename.img). People are having issues flashing system when using the flash all script.

The Lollipop stock rom - like previous stock roms - will overwrite a custom recovery on boot. Flashing the correct SuperSU zip usually solves this by overwriting the file with the needed files to run SU at boot. Otherwise be prepared to flash recovery before attempting to use it.

Speaking of root - right now lollipop requires a modified boot.img (kernel) in order to obtain root access. The one-click tools should be updated to support this already. Make sure you are using the latest tools.

EDIT EDIT EDIT: Argh, so everything booted up fine but then it took me FOREVER to figure out how to flash TWRP, got there eventually though.

BUT THE... I spend infinity try to learn how to get root back, muck about with fastboot, chainfire etc, finally get CF Auto Root on and it sticks in a bootloop!

Reflashing factory image now and going to have to try to remember how to flash TWRP again.

Has anyone got root working and if so how?

EDIT EDIT: Ok, I was mucking up my command, I was typing flash-all.sh when I needed to be typing ./flash-all.sh

FLASHING NOW WISH ME LUCK, BROS!

I'm thinking about giving stock Lollipop a go, I'm currently rooted running dirty Unicorns 8.2 and my original plan was to just wait for a DU version of Lollipop to be released but lately my phone has been extremely slow and laggy so I'm thinking I might wipe everything and start again clean on Lollipop.

Given that I'm rooted and running a custom rom what's the best way for me to go about flashing the stock Lollipop?

EDIT: I've been trying for the last hour or two to fastboot the factory image but I'm getting no where!

I am on mac, I have downloaded the sdk package and the factory image, booted into fastboot and entered the commands I can see on every website I have found with instructions and I'm getting bupkiss.

HALP PLOX?

Nexus root tool kit is a prefect all in one app for the computer. It allows you to unlock boot loader, install custom recovery, root, flash Roms/ factory images, and it even has a back up & recover utility

Did you try flashing each image seperately?

It's a bit confusing, but I think he got it sorted. The more edit labels the more recent the update, so the newest part of the post is at the top, not the bottom. :)

Exactly. I still haven't got root though (or reflashed twrp for that matter).

If nothing else works, the new WUGs 1.9.7 can flash and root Android 5.0 now. Haven't tried it yet myself, however.

You might want to post in ATR to get the rooters' attention.

Cheers, no WUGs for Mac though, sadly :(

I will post in the root forum, thanks!

I just went the CF-autoroot route. You'll have to flash your recovery manually that way though

Yeah, that's what I'll be trying and that's what I tried before and got stuck in a bootloop.

Could you possibly link to the instructions you used to get it working?

Download the CF autoroot for the nexus 5 running 5.0 here:
CF-Auto-Root

(Direct Download)

After that I just unzipped the file, put my device in fastboot, and clicked the correct root script for the machine type. Everything else is automated.

Sorry, I actually knew you had a Mac and had a senior moment. Apologies. :o

All G, bro :)

I can probably commandeer a windows laptop from work to use WUGs on if absolutely necessary.

I just got everything set up nice the way I like it too and it's all going to go away again when I root (I assume) :(

I'll give that another go, I was doing it super wrong, so no surprise it didn't work.

Am I better off flashing TWRP before or after rooting?

Just went the WUG's route and 15 mins later I am running Lollipop! Thanks for the advice!!

I flash the image, I love it so far! I thought I'd miss my dirty tweaks more than I have so far.

So far the thing I miss most is ad blocking, but I'm hoping once I work out root I'll be able to find a way to do that?

Everything else I really, really like.

cfautoroot will get you rooted really quickly, and adaway works great :)

That's the plan :smokingsomb:

I'm going to lose all my data though, aren't I? It doesn't matter too much because I did a titanium backup before I flashed the image so I should be able to get most of my app data back, I hope.

Assuming you already have your bootloader unlocked, no. You shouldn't lose any data.

I think I do, I was rooted before so unless flashing the new image relock it I think it should be unlocked?

EDIT: We have root and all data intact :) now to get TWRP flashed again and I'm home and hosed!

Glad it worked out :)
Flashing the new image doesn't relock the device, but if somebody follows the instructions on the Google developers page, the last step instructs them to relock the bootloader after flashing an image, so that's why I added that statement about the bootloader :)
