Root [International] KitKat no good for sgs3?

Pulse8

Well-Known Member
Every KitKat rom I've tried in my S3 has had so many annoying problems that I'm becoming convinced that the S3 just isn't man enough to run them!
I've lost count of how many different ones I've tried but all of them, without fail, come with a shed load of problems. So many times I get apps that won't open,or take a lifetime to do so, and then close without warning, or I try to open an app, and the phone reboots! or I get constant popups, telling me that so and so app has stopped working. I take a video, and then, when I try to play it, get told that my phone can't play it!
Also, with EVERY kitkat rom, my phone refuses to charge, or, when I turn the phone off, and plug in the charger, it boots up! So I end up having to charge the battery on a charger.
I mean, this is SERIOUSLY ticking me off! Especially after reading about how fantastic and stable a particular rom is, by someone who has supposedly tested it!
I'm constantly having to go back to 4.3 roms, which the sgs3 runs without a problem, well, relatively so.
Any input on this guys? I know there are various problems here and there on the forums, but it seems nothing like I have experienced.
Dave

Hey Dave.
Can i ask.. have you done clean flashes (wiped the data partition befor flashing the rom) and used up to date gapps packages?
Ive found even the very early kk builds to be very stable tbh.. lookin at trying my 1st lollipop rom tomorrow :beer:

Hi FL, long time no see my friend.
I use TWRP recovery, and it's 'wipe' function states that it is normally enough for most purposes.
I tried installing Validus v6.2 last night, but I got a 'fail' as soon as I hit 'install. I just thought that I may need to update TWRP, so I'll look into that right now.
I flashed a rom called 'Glamour' yesterday, which is an S5 port, and I really liked it, but there were some annoying glitches with it, see my first post. I have since learned that flashing a different kernel improves matters no end(Yank kernel) so I may give it anotther try.
I noticed that you're online, so maybe you'll get back to me with some other suggestions. Cheers.
Dave

So, I downloaded and flashed the latest TWRP via Odin, successfully, so odin told me, and guess what, I've soft bricked my phone:mad:!! Odin was set to 'reboot', but it only got as far as the white 'SAMSUNG GT-19300' splash, and there it stays! It won't even boot into recovery, either. It will boot into download mode tho, which is something.
So I tried flashing CWM recovery via odin, but Odin won't see the damn file! I've put it on my desktop, but nada, it refuses to play, which is weird. Tried different versions of Odin, downloaded CWM again, checksum is correct, but nothing doing.
I'm in the process of downloading a stock rom, to see if I can get it back up and running that way. So hard to get hold of, and it's a 5 hour download! For a 972mb file, I mean, seriously? What's that all about?
If anyone has any suggestions, please don't hesitate.
Anyway, not a happy bunny.......watch this space

F*** sorry to hear that buddy.
I'd just have flashed the latest version of twrp as a zip file using twrp (i hate bringing computers into the equation as I dont understand them lol.
Hope u get her back to life mate, let us know!

Thanks FL, I've been out all day, and only now am sat in front of my pc........
It seems that I have been trying to flash a non-odin compatible cwm file! Anyway, have found one that is 'supposed' to work with Odin, and am downloading it now. I say 'downloading', but to be more accurate it's 'was' downloading, cos the freaking thing is stuck! Oh well, will keep trying.:pcguru:

Well, well, The 'thing' is back in the land of the living....it's much too late to explain. Tomorrow will have to do. Til then,

So, this is what I did. I managed to d/l the Odin friendly CWM file, which turned out to be no more friendly than the 'unfriendly' one, as in, it still wasn't recognised by Odin. What I did, and don't ask me why, it was more an act of desperation than anything else, was unpack the CWM onto my desktop and lo and behold, Odin started to play and recognised the unpacked .md5 file, how weird is that? I've read in the past, about folk who have mistakingly unpacked the .rar file, and then Odin not doing its thing, but never the other way round!
Ok, so good news, right? Err, nope, 'cos even after I managed to flash CWM, the phone still wouldn't boot!
Soooooo....remember the stock sammy rom I mentioned? Well, I did the same thing with that ie. unpacked the .rar and flashed the .md5 file, and, long story short, it went in, albeit after what seemed like a very long writing process. So here I am with a working phone again, although I realise now that it was a Vodaphone file, and my phone is unrooted, but, hey, it's working :).
All I have to do now is re-root it, and flash a rom of my choice.....what could possibly go wrong? (cue maniacal laughter):ahhhhh:

Pulse8 it sounds as though you have mixed up flashable .zip files (used directly on your device through a custom recovery. With .zip files that come "zipped" and you have to unzip to get the .tar or .tar.md5 file in them that Odin (the PC version) uses and recognises. Which as it seems you discovered in, and I quote, "an act of desperation".

No worries. It is easily done. If your still looking for a firmware to download send me a PM with your phones CSC code and I'll go to Sammobile (I'm a premium member, downloads are a lot faster) and upload the firmware to a dropbox file in my public space for you. All I ask is don't share the link and I'll only make it available for 48hours.

You get a stock firmware without waiting for hours, I get the warm and fuzzy feeling helping someone, and my boss gets the dropbox subscription bill. Everyone's a winner :)

Thanks for the kind offer dynomot, but I'm fixed now. I get what youre saying about mixing the .zip with .md5 files etc, but I've always just pointed Odin at the unpacked .rar file and it's had no problems. Oh well, hopefully I'll learn for next time.;)

Haha, and bricked her again......I rerooted, and used an app called 'recovery tools' from the playstore that allows you to flash cwm, twrp and philz recovery from the OS, which works great, then found a nandroid backup of Neatrom v8.2 and restored that no problem. But I wanted to flash some different roms I had, namely Validus, Omega, and Glamour v8.But it kept failing, so I restored neatrom and then found an older Glamour, so I thought I'd try that, and it seemed to go in ok, until it came to booting. Got stuck on the samsung splash again! So I'm reinstalling the stock sammy as I type, and having to start again.
This is fun aint it?

Dynomot,on second thoughts, I think I'd like to take you up on your offer, if it's still available? It would be a good idea to have the proper stock rom, rather than the Vodaphone flavour. The way things are going, I'm going to make good use of it! Thanks.

Wow, sorry buddy, I do apologise for seeming so rude and not answering. Lots of real life, etc, getting in the way.
But yeah, got a kitkat rom in and working. The rom is called 'Blekota S5 Lite v9' and I was really pleased with it for a while, everything worked, S5 feel to it etc, but lately its beginning to slow down a lot, so I'm looking for a fresh one I think..........watch this space........
