Not sure about HTC devices,But maybe the Blinkfeed/Launch could be side loaded with adb.
There's no other proper way to root an HTC - unless you use something like Kingo root, not recommended for an HTC on any decent forum. People recommending things like Kingo for an HTC tend to get their posts removed or discredited.If he has custom recovery installed?
