Hold Vol - and Power when you turn on the phone until is says factory reset processing. That gets you into recovery. Factory reset is an option in there. - Said a very wise man.. It wont always work tho...

you could always use.. Settings > Backup & reset > Factory data reset. as far as the hard reset in stock recovery, i do not trust it.
the TWRP recovery has all the bells an whistles, fairly easy to put on the volt an i know that works.

His phone is semi bricked. Factory reset from stock recovery is his only option.
