Unthankful/Dislike/Thumbs Down

I'm totally against a No thanks / Thumbs down button.

I moderate on a few forums and this forum is much more open when it comes to free speech and that is one of the great things about it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion here as long as it's not spam or inflammatory to another user. Such posts should be reported using the Report button and not responded to as that just makes things worse.

I see a lot of people wondering why some quite opinionated posts go unchecked by mods and other not so opinionated but insulting to another user are hit on hard. It's just the way the site rules are here. You're free to make you're point as long as it's not inflammatory towards another user.

We are big into the free speech idea here. So you're free to say what you think – but do it in a constructive, positive, 'add to the conversation' kinda way – not the condescending 'I don't like what you're saying so you suck and also, are a bitch' kinda way. We encourage mature debates – discourage childish arguments.

if people obeyed the rules in all aspects and at all times, this thread wouldn't be necessary.

while i agree with the more mods point that a few people have made, there is something to be said for automating as much of the enforcement as possible, and making it possible for users to enforce it instead of dumping it all on the mods. as a former mod here and there (not literally here..), ive always been under the impression that in most places, mods are just users who've been around for a long time and dont want to see their forum go to crap. but they'd rather be reading and commenting than enforcing. in some cases, thats not true, and they just want power, even if its e-power.

after some more thought on my earlier post about moving and enlarging the report button and deciding that more flexibility would be better, i had something of a thought that im hoping someone can expand into an actual idea -
people don't want to be known as the 'unthanker', partially because it makes them look like an ass in some cases, and partially because it starts more trouble. but what if there were an 'unthanks' or whatever button that dumped the user into a new screen, or popped up a screen that would give you a sort of ranking system?
1 - unhelpful
2 - off-topic
3 - rude
4 - spam
5 - offensive
so on and so forth, changing labels as needed

limit it by user name or IP if possible. a certain point total hides the post in the way someone mentioned earlier, where you can click "show post" to view it, but it's mostly not visible, and put in a "ten-bajillion people found this post pointless and annoying" tag or something.

of course, this could very well be a nightmare trying to program this, so...

Another element of this issue, this proposal for an "unthank" or other penalizing button, is the removal of another of the human elements that I like about forums actively moderated.

Introducing another sort of automated method to deal with the very human aspect of making mistakes in postings here is not needed, in my opinion, any more than removing the umpire from behind the catcher at baseball games and replacing him with high tech cameras to call strikes and balls.

Heck, I can't even stand the instant replay in football games; let the humans on the field make their mistakes along with running the show in a contest between fellow humans.

No more buttons, please. :p

i give the OP a BIG thumbs down for suggesting this....

now how did that make you feel? :( <---right?

bad idea, we will learn the thanks button can even be a danger once political season comes around...cliques and what people think are cliques can be visually verified by the thanks button in a heated debate.

i recently took the thanks button away on one of my forums for this very reason.

It's a great idea, but it's just not guna work..

Some people here just aren't capable of policing themselves.

its kind of like having a drug dealer police his clients to make sure they dont smoke/snort/shoot up too much, i suppose.

oh well.

In real life we police ourselves by hiring police from those amongst us.

It might be quite similar here in the forums. The cops here are moderators with a bit of reportage help from we citizens, quite analogous to the 911 system in place in most of the U.S.

And the Administrators are like the government.

how about the same idea i posted earlier this morning, with a ranking on unhelpfulness, that would work like a neighborhood watch? doesnt do anything on its own, but tells the cops just how bad things are? that way mods spend less time sifting through stuff that's annoying but okay, and can go right to the stuff that needs to be gone?

The Guides are the Neighborhood watch :D

Hahaha, actually it made me giggle. I don't have thin skin. It's ok and I actually AGREE to DISAGREE always. Didn't make me feel anything as I respect opinions, both inline and against my own.

I'm loving the thoughts on this though and appreciate all the input. Keep it coming... :D

Geeeez, lol, I had a wonderful rebuttal which I just lost... Laptop ran out of battery, lmao.

Anyway, seeing as you threw you hat back in the ring, I will dust it off and hand it back to you. ;)

To offer a contrast to your analogy...

In Reality, we don't involve police in every matter of civil disobedience. Nor is every infraction the equivalence of the Hindenbug Kidnapping that requires the full stretch and flexation of Authorities Arms.

For example... Take NY City, a city of 18 million people. The NYPD consist of just 35,000 Officers. Now, do you think that every situation requires their involvement? No - of course not. So you might surmise, society in general is self regulated and to a very large degree it is so. Do we leave things alone and say let the authorities handle it all the time? No, of course not. We see minor offenses and we get involved, well, some do I suppose, not all. So the TD is a similar thing.

Further more, what is achieved if we are only reinforced for good behavior and not the bad? No tickets for red light infractions (automatically via camera mind you). What happens when you Boss never says you got it wrong and only walks up to you saying you're fired. Etc. ;) I understand those that may be offended by it, but in my experience, it would most likely to be those committing the offense against civil nature who become offended at receiving it.

Or as the story always goes, if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about...

It's a simple thing really, a gentle nudge saying, hey... I didn't appreciate that, or a could be a louder STOP IT! without having the need to involve the heavy hand of the Forum Regulators by reporting a post or member.

(That's not to say it is applied heavily here at all) ;)

Certainly it is interesting to see all the opinions on the subject, sorry I lost my earlier rebuttal as it was better worded, but here I think my message is conveyed.

Thanks too Rob & Slug... and everyone really, it is the fact that this subject can be discussed without it being shut down that makes this forum so great.
:D

Keep it coming!

(locking threads,
banning or probating...is this a word lol users)

I just want to point out that "probating" sounds like a dirty, dirty word and if it isn't officially a real word, it should be.

/randomness

Well i dont think probating is a word

but this is where i got it from(thanks to google)

probate - put a convicted person on probation by suspending his sentence

Oh well...

I now declare Probating a word
and yeah it does sound kind of dirty lolzz

ROTFL... lol, it's not the word, but it's use that could make it dirty... or the mind for that matter. lol...

Write me a ticket, (I'm off topic). But hey, is it ok if it's your topic to begin with? lmao, I mean I can't offend myself now can I? jkjkjk...

One of you Mods wanna give this guy an infraction for "off topic" posting?

But it was in direct reference to Carmen's post which was in reference to the malcontents with few redeeming qualities who get probated around here.

Hey, that is dirty sounding.. you don't realize that until you use it in a sentence.. :D

Instead of having a "Thumbs Down" or "No Thanks" button, maybe we should have a "Probate" button. Below any "thanks" it would say "You've been probated by the following users:"

See... this IS on topic and I DON'T deserve to be infractionified for off-topic posting. Don't make me probate you, Shiv!

probate just sounds...like the thing that
the doctors do when they do a colonoscopy(yeah spelled that very wrong)

Pro...bate...
lol omg...craziness
