Upgrade from Droid Maxx?

I currently have the Droid Maxx and have the ability to upgrade. Should I go ahead and upgrade to the Droid Turbo or just wait and see what else is coming out?

We've been discussing that here, in a way: http://androidforums.com/threads/what-will-your-next-phone-be.910789/

As my upgrade is in the fall, my answer might be different from yours. I think that the Turbo is good enough, but we are just weeks away from the Samsung Galaxy S6 and I think the HTC One M9 from being in Verizon stores. You may want to wait just a little while to see if those phones are better for you.

That said: if you bought the Droid Maxx for the large battery, then, yes, I think the Turbo may be the best phone right now. If you want something larger, the Samsung Note 4 is rated very highly. Verizon also sells the Nexus 6, though it's a very large phone. So, still, go into a Verizon Store and try it out first to make sure that you are comfortable with the size, feel, etc.

Thanks. My main concern is that I've waited too long into the cycle of the Turbo to upgrade and then be stuck with it for a year before I can upgrade again. I should have just upgraded in December when I was eligible.

"Stuck with it" - Who knows if I am wrong, but I think that the Turbo was as state of the art as far as hardware goes when it came out, and I'd think it would be fine for another two years from now. Especially compared with the Droid Maxx which, at the time it came out, was using processors that were superseded by phones that came out 6 to 9 months earlier. Still, the Droid Maxx is a great phone now, and I believe it will still be good for at least another year.

But, the HTC One and Galaxy S6 will have better processors in April/May...

by "stuck with it" I mean I won't be able to upgrade for a year if something better does come out next month. It's a crazy cycle of waiting but not waiting to long. I don't think I can go wrong with upgrading to the Turbo but you never know whats right around the corner. Then again, if you keep waiting you end up always waiting.

Herne's a deferent angle ... why do you want to do anything at this time? The Droid Maxx is a great phone. The Droid Turbo is even greater.

If you were using a Droid Bionic I could see some upgrade pressure now. You aren't.

(I have a Bionic, Maxx, and Turbo. The only frustrating thing is doing ANYTHING on the Bionic. It is SO slow.)

Because I can. ;) I like new toys. I do love my Maxx but if I've got the opportunity to upgrade to something better, even if just marginally, I feel like I should. But the Turbo has been out for months now and I don't want to upgrade and then see something newer and shinier. I guess I need to go to the store and try to hold a Turbo that's not bolted to the display to get a real feel for it.

Love the Droid Turbo, coming to it from a Droid Razr HD. The battery life is outstanding on lite use (60 hours) and on heavy use, recording, music, surfing, texting, calls, 32 hours.

I have the 64GB model that only comes in black ballistic nylon. I really like the back. There are four phones on this table and I immediately know when I pick up the Turbo without looking.

The Turbo is the first phone I have had from Verizon that doesn't have a Verizon logo on the case. This is only true for the 64GB.

The screen is sharper but it won't dawn on you for a while.

Battery life ... measured three times ... low usage ... three days.

Charge on a Tylt QU charger.

Charge on a Turbo charger from 0 to 100 in one hour.

Camera is much better than the Maxx for still outdoor shots.

Since you're looking for a new toy ... why are you reading this instead of talking to your Verizon dealer?

Why right now?

Not the OP, but in the same boat. I feel like there's a couple reasons to act now, but I'm still hesitant.
  1. I like big batteries
  2. I like small phones
  3. I like unlimited data
  4. I like root
I am concerned that 1, 2, and 3 are going away (at least using upgrades and keeping UDP as to 3). And #4 was just released for the turbo yesterday. I am hesitant because
  1. best buy doesn't carry the 64gb, and best buy is the key to using an upgrade while keeping UDP
  2. the root doesn't include write protection off (but I used my dmaxx for a while with just root and wp on, and it wasn't too bad - actually kinda nice if I messed something up all I had to do was reboot
So I'm conflicted. The only phone left to be seen is the LG G4 which should be scaled down to a more reasonable 5.3 inches. But I guarantee it won't have a battery like the Turbo. Even the huge 5.5 inch G3 has poor battery life compared to the turbo. I could wait until the next Droid Maxx comes out, but then it won't have root, like the turbo didn't until yesterday.

So it seems like right now is the best time.

TL;DR: upcoming phones will just be larger, lesser battery, and/or without root, while the UDP upgrade paths will be closed up. Since Turbo has root now, though not full root, it may be a good time. If only best buy had the 64gb, it wouldn't be a hard decision.

I upgraded from a Maxx to a Turbo (at gunpoint: the Maxx broke) and am generally pretty happy with it. The two killer features in my book, which are the same ones for the Maxx: (1) Nobody makes phones that work as phones like Motorola. Best voice volume and quality of any Android phone (and even back to the Palm platform). (2) Big honkin' battery. Enough said.

However, they did cheap out on one feature: the dual radios in the Maxx that let you get voice and data at the same time (phone call while you're navigating, for instance) have been replaced by a single radio in the Turbo. Verizon has "fixed" this with its "Advanced Calling" feature -- also known as VOLTE and "HD Voice". Read this thread for my tragic story with a heartwarming ending: http://androidforums.com/threads/data-not-working-with-voice-any-longer.908143/

Turbo is a nice phone. I don't expect to want to throw it out early any more than I would have tossed my Maxx if it hadn't broken irrecoverably.

I have the Maxx and will be up for a new phone in the Fall. I wont upgrade until I see some feature that makes the new phone a sizable improvement or the performance of the old phone degrades. Both have happened to me before.

My last phone received an OS upgrade that it really couldn't run, so I got a new phone. This could happen to the Maxx also as its CPU is adequate but does not have much surplus performance either.

Watch out for Lollipop it might be OK but it might be bad also.

The vast number of performance issues can be solved with a periodic Wipe Cache Partition. I do it on my Turbo (and did it on my Maxx) every Saturday as part of my normal maintenance. The Maxx is a great phone.

I am not that gadget friendly could you explain what I need has to be done to "Wipe Cache Partition?

I too had the Maxx now i have the turbo 64 gb as of april 2 i miss the volume when playing music

What? The Turbo is not as loud as the Maxx! I was hoping that the Turbo would retain all that was good about the Maxx and add some more features.

I'm sorry to say ,when playing on the maxx I can feel the little
Air moving from that speaker when I put my face close to it.
