Hey guys,

I need help! Yesterday I used Odin to upgrade my note 3 from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and then used the recovery tool of 4.4.4 to upgrade from 4.4.4 to 5.0.
In my foolishness I forgot to copy the whatsapp folder to my sd-card.
Is there anything I can do to recover them somehow? They're gone now the installation deleted the entire folder.. :/

Thanks!

isn't there some really reliable software to dig out deleted information like there is for hard drives?

No, because the /data partition on your internal storage has been overwritten. Even if you could access the internal storage with a recovery program, the chances are slim-to-nonexistent that anything usable would be recoverable.

No, unfortunately.

None of the recovery software that claims to take stuff off internal storage works with any reasonable degree of success. In fact, the only people I ever see claiming it's worked are shills/spammers who are just here to promote it. :(

I can't believe it, I thought that when I tried to back up the phone with Kies and it stuck in the middle, that the entire backup was gone. but it seems that the things that were saved during the backup weren't deleted when the entire backup failed - and among them my Whatsapp folder!! :)

I'm trying to restore it now, the messages that I got since yesterday and until now are a small price to pay in order to get my full DB again! :)

Just out of curiosity - if I did want to somehow merge both backups into one backup is it possible?

That's good news :)

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to the merging question. Restoring a backup generally overwrites what's there already, though I should say that I've not used Kies. If you had a backup which works like SMS Backup+ does for SMS then it would be possible, as that app backs up each message separately to your Gmail account rather than copying them all to one file, but usually this isn't the case. If your backup has stored them in a human readable format like an xml file you might be able to merge 2 backups by hand with a text editor, but I'd create a copy before trying that, rather than risk damaging the backup you have.

I was curious if it were possible to merge two back ups too. Interesting about the .xml, I think I copied a backup to my computer last time, perhaps I will have a look and see if that can be edited. However pretty much every time I flash a new ROM I end up biting the bullet and loosing all my conversations etc as for some reason, unless I'm doing something wrong, Whatsapp never finds the back up, even though its on my memory card...but that's another story.

If you have flashing ROMs, have you tried using Titanium?

I'm not a Whatsapp user, so have no experience, but it's able to handle most app data in my experience.
