Help Touchwiz Home has Stopped Working since Lollipop Update - Galaxy S4

If I do a factory reset on my Note 3, will I lose my photos and contacts etc? It seems to be the best answer but I'm terrified I'll love everything. What's the best option here? TouchWiz has screwed up my phone all together.

You won't lose your photos if you were saving them to an external SD card
If you save your contacts to your google account, and not locally, then you won't lose those neither

Hi, having tried all the above except the installing Nova and factory resetting. I fiddled with the phone and went through it's own settings. After tweaking and resetting all things in "My Device" lo and behold, I now have touchwiz working. Hurrah. Sorry, I cannot tell you exactly which tweak did the trick, but go give it a try, maybe you will be successful in pinpointing the culprit. Power to the people.

I followed these instructions instead of factory resetting which would have been a huge headache and it worked, I went to device settings and simply turned off power saving then restarted phone and touchwiz problem fixed, Thanks

I had this issue too and I had tried nearly everything from booting into safe mode to clearing cache partition and nothing seemed to work. I then tried what amandalannon recommended and it worked! For me the culprit was Motion under motions and gestures.

This worked for me as well! I turned off "Motions" from the "Motions and Gestures" menu and I no longer got the error when trying to move icons. I tried turning the "Motions" back on and the error occurred again. I didn't even need to restart my phone to see an effect. Thanks again for an easy solution to this annoying problem.

I had the same problem few days ago and believe me I tried everything except factory reset. I almost done it this morning but Amandalannon's post made me curious. So I went to "my device" and opened air view, turned everything off under air view and restarted it. Walaaaa! problem solved, now I can rearrange all my icons again.. I hope it will do the same to all of you having problem with touchwiz.
I had the same issue, but disabling Air View options wasn't quite enough for me. I also had to disable all motion settings, not just the Air option that's listed under motion settings, before I was able to get TouchWiz to work.

Hi

My Galaxy S4 upgraded to Android v5.0.1 (Lollipop) last night. Since the update my Home screens have completely changed and I wanted to get them back in a way I had organised before the update, apps in different folders contained in the main home screen etc. However, when I try to move an app into the folder by doing the long-press on the app icon an error message always comes up 'Touchwiz has stopped working' and I can't move the icon anywhere.

Has this happened to anyone else since their update? I really would like to remove some of the 'clutter' on my home screen because it's so frustrating and organise my apps into folders like I had them before.

Is there any way of fixing this issue without doing a factory reset, and does that even work?

It's a UK model on the O2 network

Thanks in advance for your help!
Tim.

I foolishly downloaded the 5.0.1 update to my Galaxy S4 without investigating potential problems. Touchwiz not working bit me hard. I tried for help with various forum fixes, tried technical/customer support from AT&T and even went to the AT&T store. Nothing worked. Didn't really want to do a factory reset.
BUT YAY, I read far enough down into this forum and found the thing that fixed it.
First, I tried setting all air gestures and all motions off, restarted and woohoo it finally worked.
Second, I went back and tried turning them on one at a time and found the culprit (for my S4 anyway):
Under Settings, My Device, Motions and gestures, Motion: The setting here must be off.
There are still a couple of things I can't do but at least I can customize my home screens.
Thanks to amandalannon and benzt for pointing me in the right direction

I had the same issue. I deleted the cache, didn't work. I wiped the cache partition, didn't work.

By doing as amandalannon, benzt and tomb1024 have said. Under Settings, My Device, Motions and gestures, Motion: The setting here must be off. EUREKA it works...

Thanks,

I have a Samsung Note 4 with Sprint service and have the same issue. I've tried the turning off the four Motions and Gesture options with no luck. Note: the above posts mention only turning off "Motions" in Motions and gestures however I have four options under it: Direct call, Smart Alert, Mute/pause and Palm Swipe. I turned all these to off, reset... touchwiz still crashed.
Anyone else with a Samsung Note 4 able to fix this?

So the touchwix home has stopped working...:thumbsupdroid:A simple solution is to update the software....
Go to "Settings...More.....About device...Software update....";)
then follow the steps that popup in ur samsung.....and after downloading and installing updates...ur phone will b restarted automatically (if not then restart manually)... Then there u are...:cashdroid:.touchwiz home is back again in a full working condition.
:batdroid:

Since the update touch whiz isn't working and I'm unable to send pics to my printer to print. I'm not liking that my icons are in actual folders either.

I have the Note 3 and was having the 'moving icons crashes TouchWiz' issue too. I turned off all the Controls Options and turned off my phone and cleared the Cache Partition before rebooting my phone. Once my phone came back on, I was able to move icons with no problem.

I went back under Controls and turned them on one by one, performing an icon move after each. Once I enabled Motions, TouchWiz crashed when I tried to move an icon. None of the other options under Controls caused this crash.

I also tried to enable each individual option under Motions, but all of them caused the crash. It appears that motions specifically is the culprit on my Note 3.

Tim, after reading Bentz's solution, I went to "device" and opened air view, turned everything off listed under air view and restarted it. Problem solved and now I can rearrange all my icons again.. I hope it will do the same to all of you having problem with TouchWiz.

Thank god for your post. I did not want to factory reset my phone! I went into my device and turned off all the air and motion gestures. Now my phone works fine! Thanks for posting this!

I turned off all air and motion gestures on my phone and now it works great! Everything back to normal! Thanks amandalannon!

Yup, turning off Motion did the trick. (That wasn't easy, since my menu and back buttons stopped working since the update.)

Hey, I have tried them all, except to root my phone. Touch Wiz keeps popping up, I tried Nova and to move around I was required to use touch wiz. Now it says SELECT A HOME APP. i choose TouchWiz home, because the only other option is TouchWiz easy home. I choose ALWAYS. Then it takes me to Clear Defaults, "Clear default app settings by going to Task manager>Clear default and tapping Clear" I choose OK and nothing makes this go away, it comes back again and again.

Nothing works....

Dont do a factory reset. all you have to do is go to the motions and gestures and just turn everything off

Someone needs to tell Samsung... it wasn't broken and did not need fixing. I'm headed in to Best Buy... nothing works ...trying to resolve this Touch Wiz nonsense.

Do not do a factory reset. Go to... motions and gestures... and turn everything off.

1) Get in to...
Settings ...then tap the.. more settings bar at the bottom... tap on MY DEVICE..(center screen).

2)Scroll (using fingers to move the screen UP) to
Motions and gestures.

3) Turn EVERYTHING OFF. ... Fixed!!!

I had the same problem after the install of Lollipop yesterday. I called Samsung who remoted into my phone. After clearing cache and partition and reboots she finally sent me to Best Buy. I had the Samsung market manager work on the phone for an hour. He knew of the problem and thought he had solutions. After more steps to include removing apps, new bios and reapplying the install he resigned to installing Nova which is a work around. Using Nova doesn't allow many of the widgets I previously had so I found this thread.

After reading amandalannon's post I gave it try. For me turning off motions, smart screen and airview settings touchwiz now works. Unfortunately with all the earlier changes my other settings are gone as are my home screen windows and installed apps. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I am calling Samsung to inform them.

I had an open ticket with them on this issue so have included this link in my update. Hopefully they will let developers know the issue to determine a real fix and then let us know. If I hear anything I'll post it on this thread.
