Help S4 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

If you are experiencing an abnormal battery drain, lags or high data usage you may want to check out the following...

Top Five Worst Apps That Drain Your Smartphone Battery And Performance: Facebook, Spotify, Instagram And More

1. Facebook

2. Spotify

3. Instagram

4. Path

5. Amazon

Try wiping the cache and data of these apps to see if that helps your battery and performance. See #1.5 User Apps: Wiping cache, data and uninstalling

You should also check any other apps that you are using to ensure that they have been updated for Lollipop and ART. See #1.2...

Some of these problems are caused by app's or settings that are not suitable for the new firmware. Remember, not all app's/games on the Play Store may be compatible with your new firmware yet. This is down to the developers of those apps who have had 6+ months notice to update them. Most have, some have not.

Since I updated to Lollipop I can’t move any icon on the home screen or transfer any apps icon or widget to anywhere. Every time I want to do it I get this message: Unfortunately, TouchWiz Home has stopped. I tried to replace TouchWiz Home with TouchWiz easy home and back, but no success.

Something I find very annoying are the notifications showing up on the lock screen, and I can’t get rid of them. Is this an issue and Is it possible to turn them invisible, or is it just the way it is meant tobe?

I wiped the cache as per Ironass’ instructions on Step #1.3, but nothing changed.

People here will probably blame my opinion, but I find many inconveniences and things that I dislike on Lollipop. The free memory and the available have both shrank. Some information disappeared or was moved to where is it not needed. This phone already used to run the battery out much quicker than other ones, and now with aggressive, plain and flat white screens that I hate it lasts even shorter. I have always had dark desktop PC backgrounds. I find some "improvements" really disgusting. I can´t understand these Google or Samsung choices. I am so disappointed that I am seriously considering reverting to Kitkat 4.4.2. Will that be possible with a MyPhoneExplorer backup?

Thank you for any help.

Sorry to learn you are having some issues with Lollipop Straydog.

Try booting into Safe Mode, as per #1.4, and then going into Settings > Application Manager > All > TouchWiz easy home and TouchWiz home and clear the cache and data on both and reboot your phone, to see if that helps. You will, of course, lose your old TouchWiz settings.

See #1.2 for why you have less memory. If you are on AT&T or Verizon's own version's of Lollipop, they have added bloatware.

To revert back to KitKat, follow the instructions in #1.5 of 29 Galaxy S4 models - know yours? I would not rely on MyPhoneExplorer for a full backup but would suggest 1 or more of the options outlined in #2.1 of this guide.

if I am not having problems should I still do a factory reset?

with the update to ART is it something I should do as a preventative measure?

No need to do a Factory Data Reset if you are not experiencing any problems. However, I would always recommend wiping the cache partition after an update.

Thank you Ironass. I cleared both caches on safe mode, TouchWiz easy home and TouchWiz home, but the issue remained even on safe mode and also after rebooting. Unfortunately, TouchWiz Home has stopped. This is terribly annoying because now I can't even rebuild my old home screen icon displayed settings.

Sorry about the notifications on the lock scree. I had forgotten and only remembered when I got there :( .

I will try to get used to this bloody Lollipop thing before reverting, but I think I'll give up after some more time, and then will follow your link for the instructions because I have only a full backup with MyPhoneExplorer made precisely before I applied the firmware update. It might be alright if I don't have another one.

Edit: I also wiped the cache partition in Recovery Mode with no effect. Is there anything else that can be done, please?

I also experienced the problems of most users after the Lollipop upgrade. I have an AT&T Galaxy S4, i337, which I love and has served me well. After the upgrade I was so frustrated, I wasted practically a whole day trying to get it to work. The TouchWiz would lockup when trying to add an icon, WiFi was unstable, Bluetooth could not find any devices, downloading a file was unsuccessful, etc. I spent time with Samsung Tech support that walked me through various trouble shooting steps: reboot, take out the battery and reboot, boot into safe mode, clear the cash, and clear the data. The only thing I didn’t do was format the SD card and internal storage. I called AT&T and got basically the same advice ending up with them telling me to do a factory reset.

I reluctantly performed a factory reset, after backing up or course, which did not help. I finally went to Best Buy where I purchased the phone and asked them to flash it back to 4.4.2. He said the only thing he could do was to re-flash 5.0.1. To my surprise, it appears that it fix my problems.

The lessons I have learned is to first do an internet search to see if there are any problems with a new upgrade and to see if there are any features and reasons to upgrade and never upgrade with OTA, I will go back to Best Buy and have them do the upgrade.

I hope this information can help someone.

I never had a problem upgrading, but the first time I used OTA I got in a big shit with your issues and more. It is very difficult avoid FOTA if you use Wi-Fi very often because once downloaded it does not upgrade with Kies3.

On the other hand, some issues were expected with the new changes in the basic OS, but not so many because the developers have not done a good job.

People said that if you turn off motion gestures you can fix the touchwiz problems? If that doesn't work clear the Touch wiz cache

Hi I am a Samsung Galaxy S4 user in the UK who recently udpated to lollipop through my carrier (O2) on an unrooted phone.

Before i updated I was using Samsung Knox regularly and had quite a few files saved in it.

After the update Samsung Knox appeared and I was prompted to enter my password. My previous password was accepted, but then i got a message:

'failed to mount Knox partitions. Restart device'.

Restarting doesn't work and i am prompted for the Knox password each time I switch restart the device with no success.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem so i can access Knox?

I assume if i do a factory reset i will lose the files?

Hello and welcome to Android Forums maddy de Silva! :)

Thank you for your post.

There are currently 29 different models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and over 3,000 different stock Samsung firmware versions, worldwide, covering 6 different Android platforms, Android 4.2.2, Android 4.3, Android 4.4.2, Android 4.4.3, Android 4.4.4 and Android 5.0.1. Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following questions will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1 Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S4 that you have and which Android version you are on.

#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

Thanks. The above helps us to help you and hopefully someone will be able to reply to you shortly. :)

For more information, see, 29 Galaxy S4 models - know yours?

(TIP If you are a poster it is a good idea to mention your model number and firmware version in case this has a bearing on your problem.

Better still, if you have 25+ posts, you can go to the black bar at the top of this forum and click on your
Username, which will show a drop down menu. Just select, "Signature", and you can enter in the signature box the details of your phone, i.e. - "Galaxy S4 i9505". This ensures that your device details are shown in every post you make. You can update this as often as you like and will help other users immediately identify your phone and firmware.

@ironass

This has been helpful but these are for those who've either have issues downloading the update or after installation.

Issue i encountered was during the actual installation.
  • After the download, triggered the installation and phone rebooted. The android icon and progress bar showed that installation of the FWare was in progress. Around 1/3 of the progress the Icon changed and showed "ERROR". Phone rebooted, no issues on the phone (went back to Kitkat 4.4.2)
  • Phone Storage space shows that the downloaded 'update' is still saved in the phone
1. Do i need to re-download the update? Tried checking for updates and it is redownloading (cancelled this for now)
2. If i dont have? How can i retrigger the reinstallation?

Tried uploading a screenshot of the phone details, but cant so here it is:
Model:GT-I9505
Firmware:
Version:
- AP: I9505XXUGNH8
- CP: I9505XXUGNH8
- CSC: I9505OLBGNH2

Hello and welcome to Android Forums princeitlog :)

I would suggest that you re-download the update, preferably over Wi-Fi or, better still, Kies, and let it go through the process, again.

New here, so please excuse if I don't explain anything correctly.

I believe my Galaxy S4 was just updated...(SGH-M919, 4.4.4 version). A few of my apps (not going to lie, Candy Crush) stopped connecting correctly. I cleared the cache, restarted, etc. I then uninstalled and try to re-install and was told the game was not compatible with my device. The same happened with Instagram, which I had not even had on there prior. However, I was able to update my Candy Crush on my old phone, which is the original Galaxy S from way back when. Any suggestions on how to either change back to the prior update or ways to work around this? I just bought this phone a few months ago.

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Songbirdz :)

You have the T-Mobile (USA), minority carrier variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and have, it would seem, just received the update to Android 4.4.4 that was released 170 days ago, NK2.

The first thing you should do is to wipe the phone's cache partition to clear out any detritus from the previous firmware as this can cause problems. See if that solves your issues. Failing that, you will be looking at a Factory Data Reset.

Please help. I have never tried a forum before, but after 3 days of frustration, here goes. After the upgrade I have started having problems with my phone and bluetooth in my car. Yesterday it finally just wont stay on. I have a 2013 Toyota Avalon and it will not pair with my phone after the upgrade. Help>>????? or do I just get a new phone...... UGG

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Molly1520! :)

The first thing to do after an update is to wipe the cache partition as per #1.3. This is quick, easy and simple to do and can resolve a lot of problems. Un-pair your phone, if paired, and re-pair again after the cache wipe, making sure that you make your phone, "visible", in the bluetooth settings.

Well after a couple of times it finally took in the car. I am hopeful. Made some calls and rec somes. Will try again later and thank you so much. I hope this helps others.

I thought I would add to the documentation of problems with the Lollipop upgrade.
I've got a Verizon SCH-1545 with v5.0.1 that I've been dealing with since May 1.

The big problem is that the app I've used the longest since 2009, Timerific, was no longer functioning. I have it set to change sound and screen brightness according to a schedule. It simply would not work anymore.
Screen brightness continues to be a big problem, and it will automatically change the brightness to either 4% or 100%, even after I just manually changed it moments before.

I will be doing a FDR this weekend and I hope it resolve these problems.

Edit: My battery life has been EXCELLENT with this upgrade.

Upgraded a few days ago, at first I was unhappy. Still preferred kit kat but I'm getting used to lollipop. The only problem for me is (so far) is battery drain, after a few days and wiping the cache it's a little better. I've been debating on going back to kit kat, something that may be a bit over my head. I've thought about a stronger battery, any input on that.

Are you currently using any of the apps in post #26?
