All of that is true. Also take into consideration the GCVWR and even your axle ratings. It gets even messier when you go commercial.
On average, about 15% of a trailer's weight is supported by the tongue, so if your truck's GVWR is 10,000, and the truck weighs 7,000....that gives you 3,000 lbs for humans, fuel, cargo, and the tongue weight from the trailer. A good weight-distributing hitch will distribute some of that tongue weight to your front axle too for more stable towing.
