Help Auto rotate/tilt not functioning

el nombre

Lurker
I have a nexus 5 and recently the auto rotate and tilt function has stopped working properly. It seems to just disable itself randomly (even though it's still switched on according to the settings). Turning the phone on and off solves this but then after a while it fails again. The only thing that I can think that's happened to the phone recently is that I replaced the screen after dropping it but based on the fact that turning the phone on and off fixes the issue (temporarily at least), it doesn't seem like a hardware issue. Anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

Hmm, thanks for the response. That will definitely work as workaround for watching videos and stuff but it's not going to help with the tilt functionality in games etc unfrotunately.

Hopefully someone will show up more versed on the subject than I am and help you with the rest of your issues, but at least it's a workaround for videos and texing and web browsing.

It kind of does sounds like an intermittent hardware issue to me...given that you did have to open it up to replace the screen, perhaps the accelerometer and/or other sensors were either damaged during whatever necessitated the screen to be replaced or their connectors are not quite seated during the repair process.

I know how tightly-packed and tiny things are in cells phones nowadays and the N5 is no exception.

It's more likely that you'd see an intermittent hardware issue than you would a software issue, IMO.

There are lots of free apps like the one below that display the output of your accelerometer. That won't help you fix the problem but may help diagnose it (since your accelerometer s provide input too the auto rotate function). Besides, it might be fun if you are a closet geek.

Program linked below is free.

It displays x, y, and z acceleration in units of meters per second.

Standing up and holding your phone in front of your face in landscape mode, x should be around 9.8 (acceleration of gravity) and the other two zero.

In portrait mode (still standing with phone in front of face), y should be 9.8 and the other two zero.

Now tilt it so the screen is facing the ceiling. Z should read 9.8 and the other two zero.

Try it when your auto rotate is acting up.
