Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

The only special plan I am anticipating is one for the hotspot. If you search some more I believe you can find a quote from Dan Hesse saying 4G will not cost extra. In my searching I keep finding links like the one just posted and a bunch a crybabies in the comments that say they won't, have you seen the plans yet? pricing? NO. STOP being pessimistic, I could see why they'd charge for the hotspot, maybe create plans, but not charge extra for 4G.

RE: New Plans

I would be absolutely floored if Sprint charged more for a 4G EVO plan right now. 4G is limited in scope, and it is cheaper for them to maintain. Also, they sure as hell won't attract new customers with high priced plans. I would be equally as floored if they did not charge for the 3G/4G hotspot usage.

Floored is quite the understatement!! Completely PISSED OFF is how I'd feel -- ESPECIALLY if they raise the price of the plans!

doesn't lower SAR # come from less signal strength beside your head ?

You caught me going out the door, you are lucky I was working on sunday. I am a software person, not a hardware person. But I have a hardware person sitting here and he will try to explain.

The SAR# and wattage of the signal can effect reception to the tower. But these numbers are not important as the antenna setting and hardware interference. When a manufacture makes a phone they try to achieve two things. First the lowest sar and wattage rating possible, while increasing reception of the of the radio. Alot of the newer hardware has unpredictable interference, for example, the new amole screen have a unexpected increase spike in spectrum areas that normal tft's do not. Since everything under the hood, interferes with everything else. The radio wattage can be increase and decreased to maintain the signal strength required by the design parameters issued by the engineers report.

In newer phones the front facing sar rating (what the fcc test for) has become a HUGE consumer and media health topic. This makes the phone manufacturers to decrease the sar effect though shielding the front facing part of the phone. This redesign caused a shift in components and over all antenna efficiency. The shift also caused an over increase in wattage and a decrease radio effectiveness.

Looking at the SAR # and the Wattage output of the EVO, with the theory that the manufacture is using the same protocol and design parameters as past phones. The evo shows a low sar rating and a low wattage rating, which tell me that the radio has really good reception (design parameters) with every little sar/wattage usage (battery life).

Of course this is all theory since it is impossible to lab test these ideas.

I hope this helps.

The "could be one of the most expensive plans around" part is what caught my eye, but that was the site's opinion not anything factual in the leaked photo.

Hesse said no extra charge for 4G so I'm gonna believe him. Like someone else said, the only thing you pay extra for is the mobile hotspot for 8 devices which will be 10 or 15 bucks a month.

In 3 days we'll have official information, just wait b4 you rage guys, the phone is what's really important here :)

The spacing isn't substantial enough to give a difference between mono and stereo IMO.
Correct. There will never be enough bass in any speakers that small anyway. Also, if quality earbuds are used, especially with the Incredible, the sound is excellent. By quality I mean something in the range of 10-23,000 Hz. Most people don't look at the specs on earbuds before they buy them. Looking at specs on the package before buying can make a world of difference. The average specs on the majority of earbuds (even some very expensive ones) are 20-20,000 Hz. Bass at 20Hz is just ok and highs at 20,000 Hz are suitable. I have some relatively inexpensive Sony buds ($29) that spec out at 8Hz-23,000Hz. The bass is phenomenal and the highs are so crisp you can hear slight cymbal taps.

So seeing as this is a "Speculation" thread, I'm going to speculate. Please be advised, I have NO INSIDER INFORMATION....this is only a guess...

So everyone is talking about a possible "App" or something that may be announced on wednesday. Something that will catch the general public's attention, including Joe Sixpack (as said before)...so here is my guess:

How bout an actual application pre-installed that utilizes the front-facing camera for actual video chat?? They have said it will be available at some point, why not out of the box? This will definitely catch a lot of the public's attention!

What you guys/gals think?

Sorry to stray off topic but you don't happen to have a link to those buds do ya? I want a nice EVO experience when it comes out and some good ear buds will help. :D

Quick question: does anybody know if the final version will be red behind the kickstand and beside the camera lens? I, for one, hope it is black or silver, or even yellow (since it is a Sprint device), but RED is WAY too Verizon-ish for me.

Hah I actually do look at the specs on earbuds and make sure they are at least 8hz-23,000Hz, I bought a pair of decently priced sony earbuds years ago and the bass sounded great, so I won't accept anything less.

I'm with you guys, that looks like the site's opinion and it annoyed me that they posted that and got a bunch of fans alarmed without any solid proof of higher prices being charged.

Here's what Hesse said (from engadget's live blog at ctia)
9:35AM It sounds like Sprint's long-term plan is to go to an exclusively data-based model -- voice minutes will start to go away, and it'll be more about monthly byte buckets.

9:35AM "It's like standard def versus high def, but with that analogy, you paid more for the better service. With 4G, we're giving you more for free."

9:34AM With 4G, "because we can produce a gigabyte cheaper, we can offer more to the customer."

9:33AM "3G's kind of getting exhausted. I talk to my network guys, and it's like Scottie in the engine room... 'she's going as fast as she can!'"

Maybe I read it different than other people, but I dont see where he ever infers that Sprint wont charge extra for 4G.

Even if I think it would be a dumb move if they do.

Here's a good link that address some of your concerns / questions:

The above link contains a lot of good info relative to SAR, and discusses power output regulations for both mobile handsets, as well as base stations (I would personally be more worried about having a base station nearby...).

What's interesting to me is the fact that the underlying technology (such as the WIMAX wireless protocol) prvodes more opportunity to do more, with less. Basically having a newer radio with the same power regulations, but utilizing more sophisticated techniques for data communication lead to greater bit rates over the same range as older radios which use wireless protocols with inherent limitations.

Handsets still limited to 1W by the FCC, yet able to demonstrate data rates of 144 Mbps (rx) / 35 Mbps (tx) for as great as 50 Km is pretty impressive. Updates to the WIMAX protocol (802.16m) are expected to yield even greater data rates.

So....you end up with a smartphone device that can provide an impressive range of capabilities, yet not have a greater RF emission that its predecessors...

WaveShield Cell Phone Radiation FAQ

If your in an area without towers the SAR would be higher vs many towers would be lower. Many new phones have a lower SAR including the EVO. Look at HTC Imagio in the list below, it's one of the lower SAR ratings. How does it work out in the middle of country with no towers close by ?

My LG has a SAR of 0.6 and works pretty good now days with all the towers. There was a time 4 years ago when it always seemed to have 1-3 bars. I would rather use battery powered external antenna or portable to extend range vs risk my health/DNA. It would be interesting to see how many VZ phones have higher ratings vs Sprint. You'll notice iphone has been reduced too but still double the EVO. This is one of those subjects you aren't suppose to talk about though.

I'm curious, if Mhz range has not changed since these test started and co need to reduce batt drain to offer more hardware / options along with lower SAR # what would be the best way ? do you build more towers so phone signal output is reduced along with improving batt. life so you can add more hardware. batt. tech has not improved enough on it's own without reducing signal draw has it ?

I think River of Ice has pointed out something we should research further.

They are only one of more websites now running the story about leaked Sprint pricing plans, and I believe they have a screenshot of the leaked email...

Okay, I see what you're saying. I just didn't like how their headline made it sound like the Evo was going to be "expensive to own", when it sounds like (in the beginning, at least) it will not be any more expensive than other Sprint smartphones, except for the extra hotspot charge. Not to mention that it will be much cheaper to own than some OTHER smartphones on other carriers.

I believe the screen shot is of the training stuff that has been going around for a couple days. I also believe what the training stuff is saying is that there will be an extra charge for the wifi hotspot feature though it doesn't say how much that extra charge will be.

how about this part

i think one of the "surprises" announced on May 12 will be simultaneous 4G data and voice.

the first thing i will delete off of my phone will be any NASCAR, WWE, or Reality TV related Apps i find.

Could be...but y'know because Sprint is losing money faster then you can say Evo, I could see them jacking the prices. I for one hope they don't and the Evo saves them. I am considering leaving VZW after 8 years mainly because of the Evo.

Hope you're right about the surprise, . . . I didn't think you could delete pre-installed apps without rooting, but maybe I'm wrong? I hope so, because I'm with you--I wouldn't use any of those either.
