Root Root, Recover, OC Questions

Hey there. I'm new to Android in general. A friend gave me an old Awe and I've been playing with it for a while; but it's time to really dig into it.

I'm fairly tech savvy, run Linux machines, quite familiar with MS operating systems also. So, I feel confident in playing with a junk phone.

I was really trying to do /u/dragonhart6505 guide

http://androidforums.com/threads/tutorial-clockworkmod-recovery-stock-recovery-root-easy.826724/

But I noticed the OC kernel is missing from the download folder. Is there a newer kernel? I was really comfortable with his video toot; so, ideally, I would do the same steps to OC - if thats even possible. IE: Drop it on the phone with the Superuser & CWM files like the video @11:45

Are the files in his download still current? I used the download link in his thread. I know this is an old phone. So, I want to make sire I'm running the best files I can.

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the kernel was not part of the file you flased

I haven't made any changes to the phone yet. According to the tutorial from dragonhart6505

You download this zipped file

http://d-h.st/fkc

And one of the files inside of the download is supposed to be: OC Kernel; but it is missing. I've downloaded the file on 2 different machines and no luck.

At 12:34 of the above video, you can see the zipped folder has 11 items in it. When I download and extract, I only get 10.

I don't even know if the files in that download are current. I mean. I know the phone is ancient; but for all I know there are newer, better ways to OC and root the phone.

I tried sending dragonhart6505 a PM; but I'm new so I can't send PM's. I really want to get my phone overclocked and rooted.

Do you like it?

Don't suppose you have a SD card bigger than 32 gigs floating around do ya? I'm losing my mind because I can't flash it ATM. All I have is a 64 gig card. So I have to go buy a smaller one.
It's a good rom you don't need a sd card to flash it i just downloaded it to system and went to town do you have a custom recovery and root if so give it a try

I'm only familiar with the SD card install. Can you point me to instructions for doing it via the phone?

*Edit* I'm running clockwork recovery. Also. Thanks a heap for this info!

You can flash clockwork zip with the app posted on how to root section it's simple just follow the directions and always make a backup

Well. It worked. Kinda.

I backed up my factory ROM and I did the following (I was already rooted and running CWM installed from SD card no problems with installing up until now)

* Downloaded zipped ROM to folder on desktop
* Verified MD5 Sum
* Plugged in phone to PC

* Loaded up CWM
* Install zip
* Install zip from sideload

* Oopened CMD in the folder containing zipped ROM
* "adb devices" = recognized as sideloaded
* "adb sideload FILE.zip" = SUCCESS!
* Reboot system now.................

REBOOT LOOP INTO CWM = FU*K!

Aaaand I guess I backed up something wrong because the backup is NOWHERE to be found :/

Tried the boot loop guide (wiping caches, dalvik etc)
DID NOT WORK!!! I am so disappoint that I couldn't just be happy with he stupid stock ROM that I had to go ruin my stupid phone! First time Android user... probably gonna be my last time if I don't fix this.

First if you made a backup there is a button that says restore backup. And for flashing the rom you did it the hard way Download the rom to a folder on your phone like the download folder factory reset and go to the folder where you added the rom and flash it

When I try to recover from backup, CWM tells me file not found (or somethign to that effect). I'm starting to think I wiped wherever CWM stores the backups after I soft bricked it.

Either way. Doesn't matter. I'm stuck at the kernel android image. I can boot to CWM... but the boot loop is now just a freeze at kernel image.

So.. I'm done with it for now. I followed the directions exactly the same as I did for the root and installing CWM. It said it was successful.... IDKWTF I did wrong. But it's useless until I figure out how to un-softbrick it.

All you have to do is flash a rom and you will be back working
