Root OFFICIAL TETHER

Tried looking all over to root my lg volt from freedom pop and I can't get it to work. Thought I would try this method. I get all the way to searching for the apn and when i click on it I get a message that says "su: not found". Help!

If nothing else works, you can use KingRoot to get root, install TWRP, then immediately wipe your phone (everything except the external SD) and install a properly rooted ROM. This should be a last resort though as KingRoot is not trusted.

10) You can now toggle "Wi-Fi hotspot" on and enjoy wireless tethering!
Yes, yes I can, now. :p
I was having the same issue as you, thanks for this! I drive for Uber and like to have Wi-Fi available for riders. I had been using Wi-Fi Tether Router, but the fewer apps the better.

Now I just need a way to add it to my quick settings...

EDIT: I found this on XDA, but I don't seem to have the entry it mentions. Can someone else check theirs? I suspect it may have been removed from mine somehow...

When I tried that guide I had the same problem - the phone starts the root, tries to reboot into recovery mode, then the program stalls as the phone reboots into regular mode. No idea why, never rooted a phone before.

Which method were you trying? Use the DP Tools method.

OK, so I wiped my phone, went back to original software, updated, and rerooted. Now I don't have the tether menu anymore. I've tried rewiping and installing the ROM I was on, redid all this tether stuff, used the APN fix, etc, still nothing. I can turn on tethering, but since it's not configured, it can't enable. Anyone know how to enable the menu?

EDIT: Got it fixed... For anyone else, you seem to use shortcut master and search ChameleonNodeMenu. Launch it, find Tethered Data, and set it to 2 or 4 to enable the Wi-Fi Tether menu.

Value 4 will also enable USB tether

Values 2 and 4 are on switches in tethering.smali. Noticed the values today while scanning the smali. It has the same values for verizon, tmobile and sprint. I need to figure out a way to have it defaulted to either 2 or 4 in tethering.smali. Will have to research it more. I do know it can be turned on by default in smali. Just figuring it out is where I am.

If I remember, this whole tether enable trick works well but parts may be reset if the phone is reprovisioned/reactivated. Maybe the APN part?

Reading up on it on xda. It is a very complicated thing to enable natively on these devices. Read here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575817

these guys put a bounty up for any devs, smali experts that could defeat the sprint tethering restriction for their device...which is LG and the smali they were/are discussing is pretty similar to ours. have not finished the read yet.

I've noticed I keep having to readd the 'dun' type to the APN on my phone. Haven't noticed anything that could be triggering it to reset though... I don't use tethering a whole lot, so it just seems random to me.

I haven't noticed this problem, but I removed/disabled a whole bunch of things, perhaps notably a bunch of the stuff required for OTA activation to work (ATCMD and friends). This is on Freedompop via Sprint with a stripped down ZV5 if it matters.

Where i can download the TWRP to install it?

Finding things on the forums can be intimidating to new users. I understand that. Two things. First get used to the forums. Visit and read the stickied threads. It will familiarize you with many things and you will find where things are. Two if you still cant find or just are not sure if you have found what you are looking for..just private message one of us and we will be more then happy to help. But do try to keep all topics on topic and not post off topic if at all possible. Its not fair to the original poster to steer their topic elsewhere especially if they are looking for help or looking for insight in to a particular issue. Thanks and welcome to the forums. Glad to have you :)

I FINALLY got it working! For those of you that have had issues trying all the other methods and could use what I learned, here you go broken down Barney Style:

I used Shortcut Master (Lite) by vndnguyen from Play Store.

1) After installing and then launching the app, go to upper right corner menu and tap the three dots.

2) Do a search (third option from top in menu) for "Apn".

3) Towards the bottom, there are three "com.lge.hiddenmenu" options in white letters. IMPORTANT: Tap the middle option that reads "com.lge.hiddenmenu.vzw_only.ApnSettings" in gray letters under it.

4) Tap on "Launch" (picture of the rocket ship).

5) Tap on "internet" option at the top.

6) Go down and tap on "APN type". IMPORTANT: Now add ",dun" at the end of "default, mms". VERY IMPORTANT: When done, it should be "default, mms, dun". Tap "OK".

7) Go to upper right corner menu and tap the three dots. Tap on "Save". Exit out of app and reboot the phone.

8) When phone boots up, go to "Settings" and under "Wireless Networks" at the top, tap on "More...". The option is located below "Call" and "Share & connect" that are below the toggle switches for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, etc.

9) Tap on "Wi-Fi hotspot" and then tap on "Set up Wi-Fi hotspot". Set security (WPA2 PSK is best) and a password. A password is IMPORTANT! You should change Network SSID to "C:\Virus.exe", "Network Not Found", "Hidden Network" or whatever you like. Tap "Save".

10) You can now toggle "Wi-Fi hotspot" on and enjoy wireless tethering!

This worked for me and is super easy thanks for the detailed tutorial I just want to add that I did not use the build prop edits here in the beginning of this thread.

my build prop reads (near the bottom)
net.tethering.nonprovisional=true

the apn edit seems to be working for me

This thread should be a sticky thread I've looked all over for this at this forum and just stumbled across it today
