Maps update with direct icon finally

There's a few other nice things about the update too! The ability to "star" places and long-press a place on the map to pull up the address are awesome. Is there still any sort of valid argument that the iPhone is better than any of the 2.0+ Android phones?

Yeah, for any place that you need directions to on a regular basis you can find it on the map, long press it, tap the address that pops up, and then star it. When you click the menu button you can pull up "starred places" and be on your way to one of those places in seconds. Pretty nifty.

I haven't tried it yet - but can I enter an address or plot it in navigation and THEN star it? Or do I have to long press on a point on the map - which would be inaccurate if you are trying to star a house address.
Thanks
Nick

The answer is yes. Where there was no star, there is now one.
NICE - this actually helps alot and really pissed me off the other day when I wanted to star non retail/business addresses.
Nick

Also - if you type an address, before you star it, click on "what's here" and if it is a business (non residential) it will take you to the "titled" entry so rather than starring just the address, it will show the name instead.

If you enter an address it will pop up a clickable icon on the map where that address is that is identical to the icon that would appear if you had long-pressed the same point on the map, and you can star it from there, so yes. House addresses are actually surprisingly accurate relative to their point on the map.

I'm indoors right now so I don't know if you can star something while your in Navigation mode, but it seems Google is making it easier and easier to do these types of things so if you can't yet, you will probably be able to eventually.

Now if we could only long press the starred address entry and label it without 10,000 steps on the PC :(

I hadn't thought of that but it's surprising they didn't include that option. Seems easy enough to implement though, so it shouldn't be too long before you can.

I have several downtown Chicago addresses and without the ability to label easily it's a real pain.
And God forbid you show up at the wrong girl's house for a date with another girl...

I'd still like a 'follow me' option whereas the nav will follow you but wont direct your turn by turn..

How is this Google Maps update what tipped the scales?

Better is always highly subjective no matter what the topic (despite what the fanboys may think).

You can do that by opening maps and clicking on the blue dot to show your location, then just drive and it will keep up with you.
Everyone's asking for the 3D follow me map.

This would be really nice to have when I'm just driving around somewhere unfamiliar but not going anywhere in particular.

pretty much the only thing missing for me now would be route options, like avoid toll roads, etc...

I would love to be able to avoid toll roads, but another thing would be the ability to re route around closed roads. Would have been nice last week when I ran into 3 detours because trees had been knocked onto the road and they were closed.

I didn't exactly say that it was what tipped the scales, but my line of reasoning is that all the Android 2.0+ phones are pre-installed with the most useful turn-by-turn GPS navigation system on the market (that i know of), and it just got more useful.

Thanks for the brilliant insight that opinions are subjective. The scales fell from my eyes!

It now has bike directions too, however, directions didn't put me on a well known bike path, Instead made me ride on a busy street. Hmm.

adds a direct way to access navigation! adds a direct way to access navigation! So what does this mean? haha sorry. I'm dense.

edit: just kidding found it! haha

Update does little for me.

Still waiting for:
-automatic traffic reroute
-Avoid unpaved roads
-follow latitude friend, when you are following another friend in a separate car/bike. (is there an app for this?)
-naming favorite spots.

But so far for a "free" gps, it sure knocks the socks off my crappy Mio GPS!

********Plot navigation destination - view list - click gears icon - avoid highways*********
Droid Does

Thanks, didn't know this was here but but the gear icon appears after you press "Route info" on the menu, not the list view.

Now if we could just avoid individual roads, closed roads for example, it would be great.
