I felt the same way when I looked at dvd players this weekend - I just want to pop in a movie & watch it, I don't need the machine to connect to the Internet. But at least it makes a bit of sense in a dvd player.

If my fridge connected to the net, I'd be worried it might post pictures of how empty it always is [emoji14]

Before the chromecast came out, I used the internet connectivity on my blu-ray player for streaming Netflix on my TV.

I can't tell you how happy I am that I spazzed out and impulsively booked a 7 night cruise in Feb! [emoji6] I'm already so over winter !!
Oh and note to self.. Remind me to babble on about the ridiculous drive to Ohio a few days ago in ice and snow and torrential rains where i couldn't see 5 feet ahead until all of the sudden we are at the base of a huge suspension bridge with warning signs flashing of dangerous high winds etc... Yeah... I panicked and unbuckled my seat belt with full intentions of jumping out of the passenger seat[emoji12][emoji12] till hubby grabbed my arm saying what the hell are you doing?? Um[emoji13]... yeah..

All the people who idolize Steve Jobs should watch the CNN documentary about him and see what an asshat he really was.

It's funny isn't it how you get different perceptions of a person, based on someone's opinion, or a documentary/interview. I watched an interview with Jobs called 'The lost interview'. He came across as a deeply technical guy, something I really didn't think he was. Very knowledgeable about technology, and passionate about what he does. He also said a lot of insightful things. I watched the whole interview, which I found very interesting. My respect for him went up after I saw that interview. Actually the guy doing the interview seemed like a bit of an ass really, but Jobs handled his questioning really well.
I think Jobs himself admitted he didn't always treat people in a good way in the workplace environment, and I've heard some bad things. So maybe he could be a bit of an arse. But hey, everyone has off days and bad moods don't they?

btw I don't 'idolize' Jobs, but I do think he was a visionary person. Or maybe he just got really lucky. But to turn around a failing company that Apple was, virtually weeks from bankruptcy, to what it is now, is a phenomenal business achievement.

Jobs had something special, for sure; but he was far from perfect, nor was he a god. Same goes for the rest of the tech elite... I'd rather see a documentary about the Woz.

Any kind of documentary will have some kind of bias or agenda that comes from the person making it. It would be almost impossible not to. Still, the way he tried to deny his daughter, and the lengths he went to to avoid supporting her was appalling. Other things, like the way he cut out all corporate charitable giving when he took over, and the vindictive way he went after the reporter who acquired the lost iPhone prototype offer insights into his true character.

I already have Roku's in the 2 rooms that have TV's. But I'm thinking... if I get a DVD player that'll be another remote, so I guess I may just as well get a wifi machine & use it to watch Netflix & everything on it instead of using the Roku. Maybe.

Neither my fridge or TV are particularly smart, and they're not connected to the interwebs either. I know how much beer is in my fridge, and have no desire to "social network" about that. And I have a 2TB hard-drive loaded with movies and TV-shows plugged into the TV's USB, and if I want to watch anything live online on it, I use my tablet or Macbook via HDMI.

Oh absolutely. Jobs was human, and nobody is perfect. And as Gmash mentioned, any interview/book/commentary is from the perspective of its producers, and will have its own agenda. Hard to know the truth often, I think.
As in all people, there are good and bad things about him, and he may have been a bit ruthless, but I'll give credit for his business achievements.

FYI:
The movie won an award even though it bombed in the theaters

Very lucky, going to treat my dad to some of Weston's finest cuisine. :)

I cancelled a family camping trip to Huntington Beach. Dngrswife is not happy about it.

Looking at the weather reports, though, I just don't feel very comfortable hauling a trailer through the Grapevine in torrential rain, possibly snow, and risking mudslides on top of that.

Plus, there is a high tide warning for the area where we are supposed to camp (which is a parking lot between the beach and an estuary) with up to 15 foot surge. Plus winds...

I'm not averse to rain--I'm Floridian, FFS-- but there is a limit to how much misery, complaint, and being stuck in traffic that I can handle, and I don't want to place myself into a position where we'd certainly confront those limits.

I haven't seen the movie, but I always thought that actor was way too European looking to play Steve Jobs. I've seen a few things about him, but the documentary I mentioned was the best so far. It will be in heavy rotation on CNN, and I'm sure it can be found online.

You'll change your mind real fast. I've yet to use a smart blu-ray player that had a pleasant interface. Very slow and clunky. I haven't used mine for a long time. Roku is much better.
