Root Galaxy S3 I717 At&t soft brick help

You could update to 4.4.2 using the guide in the XDA link I posted. Take another look and read over instructions.

Or you could borrow someone's AT&T sim,set up phone, take the OTA updates, remove sim. You would have to flash back to stock unrooted first. Good thing about 4.1.2 is it doesn't have Knox and you can flash the firmware from Sammobile with Odin

Unfortunately AT&T doesn't release all of its firmware updates and can only be had OTA. Sammobile only has 4.1.1 available for download. Knox was introduced around 4.3 which prevents downgrading. Current firmware for the i747 is 4.4.2 NJ2.

Fortunately most of the OTA's were captured and made into flashable zip files that can be used with a custom recovery. I have updated several i747's using these found at XDA. Great to have if you are rooted and can't take a OTA.

There is a leaked version of 4.3 that is supposed to be MD5 tar and flashable with Odin. I have never used it so can't vouch for it.

I've downgraded.. that whole thing about not being able to downgrade is crap... you have to pick the option "nand erase all" and it will downgrade... had both a i747m and a i317m and did it to both since on 4.1 you can carrier unlock using the dialer... then i flashed back to the newer version... you can even get it to erase the modified system status with triangle away and then it will ota itself back to kitkat

Downgrade ability depends on if it has Knox, which comes with 4.4.2.

I speak from experience. I had the latest 4.4.2 on my devices and I had read everywhere the same as you about not being able to downgrade after knox. But I read one thread and decided to risk it. It it absolutely possible to downgrade to the earliest version of the firmware for you Samsung device however to do so you must erase knox. Hence, to downgrade you must pick the option "nand erase all" in odin when flashing a previous version of the firmware. I do not wish to argue, I simply wish to inform.

I have a i535 that I hate, locked bootloader. I'll give it a try this evening. Never tried Nand erase all before. If it works, great. If it bricks it will be the excuse I need to shoe horn in my extra i747 motherboard.

Give it a shot... I don't think it matters much but I think you had to remove to "auto reboot" option too and do a battery pull when it's done. And perform a factory data reset afterwards

used triagle away to reset flash counter and I'm now downloading ota update. when i'm don I will Have a SGH-I317m that was "never flashed" over a hundred times... LOL

Well I tried three times. Used Odin 3.07,.09 and10. Auto Reboot unchecked, Nand Erase All checked. Odin would fail shortly after Nand Write Start. >Fail!(Auth) and phone would display SW REV CHECK FAIL:Fused 2>Binary 0.

Attempting to flash 4.4.2 NE1 now.

Might try with my i747 tomorrow. Would love for it to work. Could be locked bootloader issue with i535.

OK so from what I've been reading knox doesn't prevent you from downgrading. it just puts a flag preventing you from receiving OTA updates and voids your warranty... big whoop... that's the whole point if you ask me. But you can remove said flag with "triangle away" from the play store. This knox thing is blown way out of proportion.

I have not seen samsung locked bootloaders before I know nothing about the I535... What what i've been reading it's a whole different story flashing with odin on your phone in comparison to most other samsung devices. If I where you, I would totally put that I747 motherboard in there first chance I get!

Agreed, Knox is no big deal. Once installed on sph-l710 (sprint s3), there is no flashing firmware from before Knox (pre nd8). It hard bricks, every time. I have no experience with other model s3's, so I have no idea about them.
But smartmanvartan may have had success with his device.
On the Sprint s3, it trips a hardware fuse, and is not reversible by any means. Downgrading to firmware before nd8 is not possible on it.
Like I said, I have no experience with other model s3's and they may have very different restrictions/allowances.

From what I can tell it's all cdma versions of the samsung phones... Not so much because of knox but because the bootloader is locked.
