2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

Good idea! I am wondering if the stores have the update...they should...right?

dont know if they have it yet but should have it after the end of the "13 day rollout" i can try to find out give me a minute and ill try to see what i can scrounge up but i do think its only ota at the moment

I was on leak v2. Just received the OTA update. For v2 leakers your anxieties can be relieved. I'd assume the same for the v3 leakers as well. But then again, who knows...

sweetness so maybe just maybe @vzwsupport is better than some rep on the phone reading from a script

I am sure all the Verizon store's are packed today, I think there are a few minor updates from the 2.1 v3. If you plan to go to the Verizon store best off to go tomorrow because I am sure there are lines a mile wide...

Giggity....

Any chance you got the URL so the file can be shared with everyone?

You're making me want to flash v2 on my phone again to be safe. Hmmmmmmmmm.....

I considered doing this as well (to improve the likelihood of the OTA). However, isnt there some issue with the fastboot mechanism that prevents the flashing of an older version?

What you "knew" is not true. They are not even the same size.

The only things they have in common are designation numbers.

The list of improvements, etc is quite different than the leak.

This is being posted in several threads and has been since the "coming soon" announcement was discovered with the PDF files on the Verizon site.

Regarding the size difference between the OTA update and the leak's PB00IMG.ZIP, read this post describing how an OTA update is different from an RUU:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642135

The OTA update process (1.16.605.1 -> 1.17.605.1) is completely different than the RUU/HBOOT methods... it actually boots into android and performs file-by-file binary patching on all sorts of stuff as well as installing new files and other miscellany - controlled by an "update-script" (not a shell script, but quite readable).

The OTA .zip files which are downloaded from a Google server are not signed the same way as the RUU "rom.zip" files - they use the app .apk manifest signing method. (manifests and certs a la "jarsigner").

If you ran the RUU for MR1 or MR2, it created a ZIP file on your memory card that was about 100MB in size, even though the OTA update was only 5MB or so. Why? Because it flashes the whole ROM instead of just updating the changed parts. The OTA, on the other hand, changes only the files that need to be changed, hence it is always smaller.

I'm starting to agree, based on the reports of the people who've received the OTA, that it is in fact the same exact software as leak v3. The slight differences in the "list of improvements" sound like marketing errors; they were copied from another phone's paperwork.

If what I'm saying is true, then a) the file eventually posted on PCDphones.com will contain the same image files as leak v3, and b) those of us with the silent phone bug will still have it (and many of our 1.5 brethren will join us in having it, and we'll need to have our phones replaced in order to solve it).

For all those who have received the OTA...why haven't you done what is explained in the following link (obviously if you didn't know, then not your fault)?

Leakers about the OTA - xda-developers

Please, if you can, do this. If you do, there is no more waiting for the OTA and everyone can just install it directly to their phone. Also, it gives the devs something to work with to look at possibly rooting the official 2.1.

Has anyone tried the rooted 2.1 from theunlockr.com? If so, how is it working for u and what version of the leak would it be and if I installed it, would I still get the OTA?

DON'T USE THEUNLOCKR... someone did that a few weeks ago, and wound up with Leak 2.1 instead of Root 2.1.

You're running out of time to Root. Once 2.1 is on all of the handsets we (currently) have NO way to go down to Root.

Use this program to root.

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/72676-application-eris-master-application-r00t.html

I advise not to trust anything from anywhere else, but the Guide in these forums, and this app.

I'll tell ya what... tilejoesham makes a point and I might try and go to Verizon to get a new phone with 1.5 so I can root....

So far, out of all the people in these forums post, i seen one guy that claims to have the OTA. I'm just waiting for my phone to finish charging to turn that sucker on and see if I get that update.

I gave up on my Eris. Too many problems since i got it back in November. Finally a week ago they gave me the Incredible. I actually like the Eris better IF it can work well! Here is my question...If i am using my incredible, and my eris is deactivated, if i switch back to the eris and reactivate it, will the update still be available? Or, does it have to be activated when they try to push it out to it? Also, any slim chance that the eris would get the update even if not actiavted but yet turned on? Please advise!

How did you get them to give you an Incredible?

just called corporate store where they can upgrade software BUT they do NOT have it inside the store rep stated she had an eris as well ( running 1.5 ) and hasnt gotten it yet and said another rep ( running leak ) has got it so two confirmed reports ( take it as you will we know history of how accurate reps can be ) of leak versions getting ota so i am still hopefull

I have seen at least 5.
3 stand out in my mind
rxfiler, someone else who posted pics in this thread, and this most recent person on this page.
And I remember seeing a few more.

For everyone who is worried about not getting the update from 2.1v3..

I was just creeping on twitter and found this:

"@VZWSupport i have the eris 2.1 v3 leak, will i still receive the notification to upgrade or will i have to somehow manually update it?"

"@******** The update will be sent to all Eris owners. No worries. *ZC"

SO.. that is good news! Guess the waiting game is on! ...again!

Frisco!!! Where are you keeping that tea??

Ok then, what will are the improvements from the leak to the OTA?

I just got the Google maps notification that people were discussing in this thread yesterday, but when I try to update it, it keeps saying 'download unsuccessful'. Anyone have an idea why? I have 2.1 v.1 BTW, dont know if that has something to do with it.

Yes, it will be "sent out". That doesn't mean your phone will accept it.

I'm anxiously awaiting the OTA update. V3 has been very laggy for me. If I don't see confirmation on this forum soon, I'm going to flash back to v2 (assuming that's possible).

remember what i said about me readin a lot of post and knowing who to listen too.... nestor is one i listen too

very well thought out, you very well may be right.

Ok then, what will are the improvements from the leak to the OTA?

Apparently none.
In the other thread about posting your numbers if you get the OTA someone posted the pros and cons.
The cons sound exactly like what the problems are with the v3 Leak.

Guys the update is completely random. Has nothing to do with where you live, your hair color, or how many times you Check-in.

*bangs head against wall*

We've been waiting for MONTHS and MONTHS for this update. Now its rolling out so waiting another day or two for it to reach my phone is really no big deal. I don't know what the fascination is with being the FIRST to get it....

ROFL! Everyone *wants* to be the first to get a shiny new toy.

What about the signal bar issue?

BoBiGi, who already received the OTA update, mentions signal bars in his review:

Review
Pros:

Made and received a few calls this morning, no noticeable dialer lag
Tried out Navigation, it's way cool! Works great!
Easier to make calls by way of People app improvements
Love the ability to hit home button to get a look at all screens
Market is vastly improved
No lag when text messaging

Cons:

Signal strength is at 94dBm - ran at 84 dBm consistently before update
Only 1 bar - had 3 bars consistently before update

Weather App not working

Can't comment on battery life yet.....
Haven't tried Bluetooth yet....

I'm sure I will be discovering more about the update as the day goes on. But, so far so good :)
