Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Hmm, I like movie reviews, really reviews of all kinds. I don't always agree with them, but they usually still give me an idea of whether I will like something or not. I've been listening to Now Playing Podcast. It's pretty entertaining, but they are spoiler-y reviews, so I only listen to the ones about movies I've seen, or have no intention of seeing. The negative reviews are the funniest. There's also a book review podcast by the same guys called Books and Nachos that I enjoy. Very in depth analysis there.

I don't know whose idea it was to call the genre "capepunk" but I would gladly throttle them for it.

Seriously, it reads like crap, it sounds like crap... it's as bad as the greater media machine using the suffix "-gate" to indicate scandal.

Couldn’t they have come up with something a little better descriptive like, I don't know... "Super-Powered Fiction"... Super-Fi?

I mean, Cyberpunk was a good appelation: it used a computer/technological term for an alternative form of science-fiction which was very much punk-like. Steampunk, again is punk-like and a very apt description of the sub-genre. Capepunk is not punk... not even, for the most part, the anti-villian branch which is so prevalent these days.

It sickens me (not really... okay, maybe a little) that a genre which started out so decently decades ago but which is thoroughly bloated with crappy fan-fiction, highly predictable scripting and otherwise pre-digested pap: "Urban Fantasy" has a better name than this new and entertaining sub-genre of sci-fi/fan.

Dystopian was the big fad for awhile with The Hunger Games and its imitators, but I think it has run its course a bit. I haven't picked up on anything that seems like the "next big thing" lately. Psychological thrillers seem to be still hanging in there, with half of the books on Amazon still claiming to be "the next Gone Girl" lol.

I prefer the older stuff. Got some good links from Mobile Read users in that forum. Pandora's star is pretty good.
Vulcan bought it for Kindle and didn't like it, so I converted for my Kobo.

You really can't top "The Martian" or Ben Bova's books.

At least Baen does give you the genre.

I always feel that I read the original Dracula, so why bother with Vampire series if I didn't care for the original?
Sticking romance and sex in everything can't top the Martian and his potatoes.

@ Gnash: Which is really sad, considering Gone Girl sucked compared to Flynn's other two novels.

@Zuben: have you read Bones Burnt Black? Is a nice hard sci-fi with a locked-room murder mystery thrown in for good measure.

I'm still looking at the new stuff.
A lot of the older stuff is on Smashwords and free. Found a few Randall Garrett

If you want an old story written in 1946 that applies today - go find a copy of Murray Leinster's "A Logic Named Joe"

AT&T grinds my gears. We've been with them (cellular) for over 8 years, never a late payment. After having dropped Time Warner for internet and cable we went to Uverse for those services back in early 2014. We got our April bill and discovered they had raised our bill by $57 and change ...

So I called on Friday and explained I'd lived without cable before and was willing to do it again and in fact would drop all my AT&T service if this was how they treated people. I was transferred to customer retention which after trying to add services and/or switch me to Dish (never doing satellite again) they said they would try to fix it and they'd call me in 24 hours. I said it's the weekend, I'll give you till Monday evening. NEVER GOT A CALL. So bye bye AT&T.

I am looking at FI since I have the N6. Anyone have any reviews of the service and coverage?

I stopped watching cable/satellite something like ten years ago... in fact, the only television I watch is whatever Dngrswife is binging on via Netflix or Amazon Prime video, and even then it's only in small doses.

I read a lot.

Internet forum trolls grind my gears. Fortunately AF doesn't have any, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's an unreasonable individual who contributes nothing to a forum but negativity/criticism, and picking stupid fights with other members just to wind them up.

@Dngrsone , I've been thinking about dropping my cable to, I have Netflix and seem to be watching more of that than cable.
I believe if I added Hulu and Amazon Prime with my Netflix that I would still be paying less than I do for cable.

The only reason we have tv service is all the darn comic based shows on now, I like to dvr them and come back later. But as I stated, we spent a good 5 years with nothing but an antenna and we were fine. I can get Walking dead, Flash, Arrow, LOT, Gotham, AOS and the rest on the internet so for the convenience alone, it's wearing thin.

We're gonna drop it all together (TV) but still like to have high speed internet. Will most likely use TWC for that until Google gets off it's high horse and opens fiber in Overland Park.

When I realized that we only watched three channels, for maybe an hour every few days, i decided that Dish was no longer worth it. I used some of the money saved to move up a tier in my internet service.

I don't even listen to commercial radio anymore: I have zero patience for commercials.

I have basic basic basic (local stations only really) TV and internet with TWC, no phone. I buy NHL and MLB each year and also have Netflix and Amazon Prime. I'm more than set with stuff to watch, I'm actually behind on my binging right now. I have my own router/wireless so don't pay those ridiculous 'rent' fees either. It's all just such a rip. When I had full blown cable I realized I was really only watching a few stations that I could easily live without, so I do now. Couldn't be happier with my setup (and bill!!).

How can I get the current season of The Walking Dead on the internet? I haven't found any legal way of doing that, where I could watch current episodes within a day or 2 of broadcast. For free, or without buying episodes. Is there a way?

except for the few that it does.... but nobody seems to feed them much and they get bored before asking for their accounts to be deleted (option 2)

Honestly I hadn't noticed, but admittedly I've not been here that long.

I don't think so. They stay on AMC's on demand with Charter until the season is over. And they put commercials in that you can't skip. On top of that, in my area you can only get the SD version on demand. :(
