Clarkson did screw up badly.

But the mistake the BBC are making is trying to replicate what those guys had, which was unique and impossible to recreate. Their banter and play off each other was a big part of why it worked.
There is no chemistry between Evans and LeBlanc. It sounds too scripted, whereas the previous lot didn't. That was the appeal, it was just like 3 blokes in a pub, and very witty.

I don't blame the BBC for sacking Clarkson, he brought that on himself. I do object to this colossal waste of license payers money trying to flog a dead horse. They should have done something completely new.
 
Er... it was the pilot.

The first season with Clarkson, Hammond and that other bloke that wasn't James May was also pretty poor... and it took them nearly a year to get it right.

The balance between in studio/Filmed items wasn't right, and think they'll need to drag in a third person to get some dynamics going... but the truth is, that C/H/M were struggling to keep it going without and it was running out of steam in any case/

If they can fix it, then they may be able to get another couple of years motoring out of it before the engine falls off.
 
Evans is a bit of a Marmite character. I had hopes for him, because I think he's good on TFI Friday, but honestly he's trying to imitate Clarkson on Top Gear, which is a mistake. Maybe the show will continue to be a money earner for the BBC, after all it's been sold to a lot of countries now. But I'm afraid it's not what the fans were looking for in the UK.

Yes you're right, I think the show was fading, and the only thing holding it together was the banter between the presenters, which appealed to the mass 'lad' audience.
The first episodes weren't as good with the other presenter (I can't remember who he was either). But once they had the right team, then that was the magic ingredient. It didn't feel scripted, even though it probably was.

I don't think he is, but it's difficult to avoid a direct comparison when the format is so similar (a bloke talking to camera in front of a live audience in an aircraft hanger). Clarkson was a motoring journalist before getting the TG gig, whereas Evans and LeBlanc are true enthusiasts i.e. cars are a hobby/passion rather than a job. I think that will inevitably alter the 'vibe' of the show.

Maybe the show will continue to be a money earner for the BBC, after all it's been sold to a lot of countries now.

By tomorrow (Wednesday) I believe Sunday's opener will have aired in 183 different countries around the globe. :)

But I'm afraid it's not what the fans were looking for in the UK.

It was absolutely slaughtered on Twitter. But anyway, I think the ongoing viewing figures will be interesting. And as you say, the global distribution of the programme is almost certain to guarantee a good return on investment for the BBC, so they're happy.
 
I'm not even going to bother watching it.

I'm keeping my Amazon Prime subscription only so that I can watch The Grand Tour when it comes out.

I suppose the BBC can be forgiving for wanting to milk TG, after all it's been a great money spinner for them.

But I do tend to think that the show format was getting a little stale, and IMO the only thing propping it up was the banter and personalities of the presenters.

In a way it may have been better for the show to go a different way somehow, as comparisons with what went before would be inevitable.
But I still love to see The Stig thrash those supercars around the track.

True the chemistry didn't really work, and probably why Evans was dumped (sorry, he quit).
But as long as it's selling globally and money rolling into the BBC coffers, then it was money well spent, and will guarantee another series.

I had a feeling that Jeremy, James and Richard's egos were going to eventually get in the way. Is that what happened? Or did they just get bored.
 
I really enjoyed there international spectaculars. I'm sad. The cars were secondary to there charismatic personalities, sure, but it made me laugh. :(

Clarkson punched a member of the production team over some mix up with the food. He was then sacked. The other two walked out of the show.
They've all now gone to Amazon Prime to film a new show called "The Grand Tour".
 
I haven't watched Television in about a year. For 6 months before that Netflix only. I found my life was revolving around television. Now it revolves around Android. Hmmm. Cross addiction perhaps. Jeremy was always a thug. I can't believe the other two followed him. Always felt like the show was a ticking time bomb.

Clarkson was and is an egomaniac. But the three of them did have something entertaining, and is basically what was propping up the show. Without them, it's just a tired old TV show format which should have been retired years ago.
However if it sells, it's good.
I personally was getting bored with it, and gave up entirely when the presenters left.
