2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

We still have 3 more days guys, HTC said they want the update on every handset by the 16th. I'll double check, but im pretty sure that was on twitter.

This is what I want to know. Ever since I installed a leak, I haven't been able to go into an individual contact and expand upon the notes listed for that contact.

Even on v3 of the leak, I still cannot expand upon notes natively in the contact app. The workaround is that I go into the edit function. To me, this is counter-intuitive. For those that have had the 2.1 official install, did this functionality (expanding notes in contacts) stay or was it lost?

Anyone else have this "glitch"?

I have a hard time understanding how people don't understand that the Droid is not a HTC phone. I don't understand how people don't understand that the Droid is not the Eris.

I don't understand how people don't understand that just because one phone had a certain OTA schedule, doesn't mean it pertains to every OTA's release schedule.

I don't understand how some people don't understand the value of patience.

Are those lyrics to a song or did you just make it up? :D

From the v3 leak:

Code:
ro.build.description=2.36.605.1 CL165907 release-keys
ro.build.changelist=165907
The number after "CL" is the "changelist". Since the OTA folks have the exact same changelist number, it should literally mean that nothing has changed in the software. From leak 1 to leak 2, it went from 134869 to 140744, and then in leak 3 it was 165907. If even one line of code was changed, it seems to me this would at least be 165908 instead.

The OTA is delivered differently from a leak or RUU. It patches only the files that need patching, using an update script, instead of replacing all of the files indiscriminately. But according to their own numbering, it should be patching those files to match exactly what's in leak v3.

If even the changelist number is the same, then I will bet money that 2.1v3 will never see an OTA. When the update does a version check it will think you are already on the OTA.

That's fine with me, I am actually completely content with v3 and can wait for the download just to make sure.

i would say the difference is that the OTA package is built for OTA. it overwrites data. the previous leaks were full flashes that replaces the complete os.

so you have

file1
file2
file3

right

well with this update (ota and v3) out of those only file2 changed.

the ota doesnt include file1 or file3, just file 2. the leak has all the files.

makes sense to me, thank you.

i can't help but be cynical that the hacked leak contains some sort of tiger girl easter egg or potentially something more sinister.

phlr5150,

i meant the latter.

thanks for the feedback.

it's interesting watching the consumer reactions to this rollout. it's a dynamic that's bound to become more prevalent in our day to day life. for me, this is my first exposure to such a phenomena.

have a good one!

wouldn't we be hearing from at least someone here, or a source such as bgr/giz/tc/androidcentral that there was a issue?

You would think somebody would say something but...???

I'm only going by what the VZ store rep told me a little while ago..and his take on it was that we shouldn't expect anything before Mon, the weekend at the earliest...

You would be surprised. I have been an anonymous reader of this forum since January when the first 2.0 updates were rumored. Now is the first time I've been compelled to post. I am sure there are more like me out there.

At this point I can't help but think that Verizon has suspended the OTA Rollout. Here is why:

From reading these forums, as far as I can tell the only person to actually receive the OTA update is FoxCow.
He received it in the early morning hours of 5/12. Since then, nobody has received the update (and reported it here). I understand that this is a staged rollout. But a staged rollout is supposed to ramp up. Let's say they got a late start and did not actually start rolling out until midnight of 5/12. Then FoxCow was one of the lucky few to receive it in the first round. But 36 hours later there should be more reports of it. If they are doing a 10x per day rollout (like was reported, 1000 on day 1, 10000 on day 2) then about 10 more people should have reported it. Even if they are only doubling daily, the statistics say that 2 other people should have reported it by now.

My best guess is that a large enough number of the early recipients reported immediate issues (maybe along the lines of the update being completely unsuccessful) and they have decided to suspend the rollout until they figure it out, before they have a riot on their hands.

Hopefully, it is an issue with verizon's distribution method, and they can simply repackage it and try again in the next few days. Worst case would be a previously undiscovered bug in the build and they have to send it back to HTC for a bug fix, another round of testing, and they try this whole thing again a month later.

What do you think? And please correct me, if I am misinformed about the number of people who have received and reported the OTA. If you know of more people with it, please post a list.

I've talked to 6 different people via twitter and PM that have received the OTA. People are getting it, it just takes time.

Keep in mind that we are probably 1% (maybe less) of the total Eris world.

I would think so, but I think that he's right. Not one person has reported getting an update today or last night for that matter. (That I know of). If it's not being reported, then it must be an error that is expected to be corrected quickly.

Maybe they realized that they've been sending out the leaked v3, and they should have been sending out their newly polished OTA with all of the stuff that's on the pdf. flier. :D

Wow so i just tried to call verizon to try and get a straight answer outta them. I got through the computerized crap and was told to wait while someone answered my call. I sat and waited for 5 minutes (literally) and not one person answered. IT'S A PHONE COMPANY THAT DOESNT ANSWER THE FRIGGIN PHONE! Does anyone else see the irony here?

.. and many of us are already on the v3 leak... which I'm fairly convinced will not GET the OTA.

I'm finding it hard to believe that all of us with leak v3 will not be getting the OTA. If we can re-flash v3... then I assume that if the OTA does have minor differences, with the same version #'s as we've already established... a re-flash is just as possible. We should even get it if the OTA = v3 with zero changes to the code...

As someone else has already stated, it would be a software nightmare for VZW/HTC/Google if they don't have all customers with the exact same software. Future updates could then cause major issues.

Speculation is all we have until the OTA reaches more of us...

I'm still 1.5.

I haven't seen squat in terms of the 2.1 upgrade. I'm in Georgia by the way. If it matters.

Is anyone keeping track of what parts of the country are getting the upgrade? Assuming it's a rolling regional thing.

You are seriously believing that because no one is "reporting" that they have it since last night, that there is a problem with the firmware?

It's been strangely quiet...can't find any information about people getting the update today. I thought I would see dozens of threads titled:

I GOT IT!!
I HAVE IT YOU DON'T!
IN YOUR FACE!
SUCKS TO BE YOU!
