Help Has anyone had problems with the GPS?

Im having the same intermittence with a twist. My gps will re align to my home address. But if I turn my location on and off, I am found momentarily until the location turns off again on its own. One of the tools suggests my proximity sensor is not functioning. Can anyone else confirm this? BTW, this did not happen from day one. I feel like this may be driver/software related.

G Stylo is known for bad GPS. It's due to bad connection on GPS and its parts.

It seems like quite large number of batches are affected. I have two G Stylos, one works fine and another is totally unstable. :(

I am going to send G Stylo for warranty repair again. This is the 3RD TIME.

I couldn't find another stylo, so I had to activate nearby LG F6 with KitKat -_-;;

Gonna install GT's Xperion ROM. Nostalgia wooohooo...

Not sure why I didn't Google this issue before, I've been dealing with GPS related issues while driving with Google Maps for MONTHS. Finally contacted T-Mobile regarding warranty and getting a replacement tomorrow.

I suppose I hesitated since I had the phone rooted and figured it had something to do with that. Seeing this thread has changed my perspective!

If the replacement has the same issues I think it's safe to say I'm done with LG. The Stylo 2 Plus looks nice, but I'd rather go back to a budget Samsung that functions as it should. I guess we'll see!

I activated LG F6 with Kitkat but this phone has so little space so I had to delete Waze & Map.

Now I am updating map of this old Tomtom GPS I bought many years ago.

This is year 2016, what am I doing??

I have had the LG Stylo for a little over a year and have had GPS signal issues almost the whole time. I have tried different navigation apps and all have the same problem and I live in the city. I had it work better a couple times after removing the battery. But for some reason that doesnt help much at all now. Just seems to get worse and worse as time goes on. It usually thinks I am still located where I was a couple hours ago. I always have to read the list of directions to figure out how to get somewhere since it always says no gps signal. It is so annoying as I like to use it often and it doesnt work 90 percent of the time. I was at a Metro PCS store in the mall today getting my daughter a new phone (samsung) and mentioned the gps problem. He took my phone for a min and handed it back to me and said it will work now. I was like "really?" I asked him what he did and he showed me that he cleared the data for my Maps app. I tried it after leaving and had to accept the agreement and stuff and still no gps signal.... Uggh.... Well I thought I would look online if anyone has a fix and now learn it is common with the Stylo and regret I didnt get it fixed while it was still under warranty. I did hope that when my phone had an upgrade to 6.0 Marshmallow that it would fix the gps. But no, it only made the battery way worse. But im sure thats a topic for another thread. Well anyways the only thing I have found to help sometimes with getting a GPS signal was to remove the battery.

Received my replacement phone via warranty... didn't come with a replacement battery cover. Sure enough, GPS issues remain. I have a feeling that the contacts on the GPS antenna on the back cover have become worn and that's what is causing my GPS woes. @Localharddrive maybe that's why it appeared that removing the battery solved the issue - in reality you were just re seating the GPS antenna contacts.

I have ordered a replacement cover on eBay and should receive it this week so we'll see if my theory is correct.

If it still doesn't work it's time to JUMP! back to a Samsung for me lolz

@Tuscani_Noob
I had always thought the pad on the inside of the battery cover with the 2 pins was for a wireless QI charger pad. But now that I look into it, it appears it is a NFC (near field communication) Flex tag. This is used for transmitting information to another NFC enabled device that is within an inch away. Now that I read more on another forum, this pad is said to be used also for GPS. I will order a new battery cover and hope it helps. I also read some have had success by tightening the screws.

Thought I'd come and report my findings. Got my replacement battery cover today - at first it appeared that the issue was fixed, but sure enough the intermittent signal returned. My theory is that basically this is a design flaw by LG. The contacts on the battery cover appear to bend over time while being pressed up against the prongs on the back of the phone and eventually lose contact.

My solution was this: with the newly found confidence of having a replacement battery cover, I GENTLY peeled back the adhesive holding the 2 square contacts on the inside of the battery cover, and placed about a 1/8 inch thick piece of foam adhesive beneath the contacts (I had some leftover window seal foam and used an exacto-blade to cut out the small rectangle needed). I then slowly slid the battery cover back on, trying to make sure that the contacts would line up, and snapped it into place. Other than a very small bulge on the back cover, everything fit snugly back together (I use a case so this isn't an issue, someone else could probably cut a slightly thinner piece of foam and be ok).

Believe it or not folks, but I have a steady GPS signal now. Hopefully this sheds some light on the issue, and at least offers a homebrew solution to maintaining contact between the antenna and phone.

On principle alone I think I'm going with another manufacturer next time around... or at least getting a phone with an internal GPS antenna!

Good luck!

Thank you for the solid information!

Any chance providing picture of your modified back cover? Also do you have link to the replacement cover?

In my attempt to remove the battery cover to take some photos, I learned quite a bit.

The contacts are VERY touchy. I must have gotten lucky my first time. If you attempt this, you really need to make sure that the contacts are touching, which is hard to do. It took me quite a few times of putting the cover back on, checking my GPS app (I use GPS Status & Toolbox, highly recommend) and then trying again. I finally got it after what seemed like an eternity, and I plan on never taking it off again! LOL

I would recommend a sponge or foam-like substance that will flatten easily, I specifically had this lying around and it worked perfectly as it didn't cause too much pressure and flattened nicely when the cover was put back on. I cut a very small piece of it, not much was needed.

I grabbed the cover off eBay here.

Here's a pic of my (sloppy) work! Sorry for the potato quality, but I think you get the idea ;)

I also ordered a new battery cover and am waiting on it to arrive. I did try that trick also yesterday, as I read it on another forum to create a shim under the antenna contacts on the cover. I also watched a video on how to do it on youtube and the instructor used a small cut piece of card board from the back of a notepad. I did not have much luck with it working for me that is why I neglected to mention it before. I also carefully removed the NFC antenna from the back cover and replaced it slightly higher. After attaching the cover and then removing it again, I noticed two NEW small dimples in the gold contacts slightly lower than the original deeper marks, so I know it is touching the pins. Still no GPS signal most of the time but perhaps a little better. I hope the new battery cover helps.

The index card shim idea worked great for the Nexus 5. Anyway, is your phone upgraded to marshmallow? Still unsure if the crappy GPS is software/hardware related.

I believe the back cover is NFC alone, while GPS antenna is inside the back housing cover. Perhaps I may try dismantling my Stylo and see if I can spot a bad connection...

LG G Stylo is clearly design flow / manufacturer defect. Just got my LG G Stylo back from LG (3rd time warranty fix) still GPS is choppy. I am planning a family trip so I just switched my phone back to Samsung Avant.. better safe than sorry. GPS Risk too high.

Yeah that's the only major problem I have with the Stylo. The GPS works fine until you that crucial moment you needed directions yesterday... Then the waiting game

I'm gonna rip mine apart, it's just sitting on my desk doing nothing anyway :)

Well I used the GPS a lot this weekend after placing a piece of foam under the contacts like Tuscani_Noob did and I can say now that it is way better. There are still issues with it not displaying exactly where I am located, like on the next road over. Sometimes it thinks I made a turn and will reroute in a circle when I was just driving straight and then catches up like 10 seconds later. It seems as though the GPS antenna is weak still but at least it is working now for the most part.

I received the OEM battery cover I ordered on ebay this weekend http://www.ebay.com/itm/131867458851?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and it does not have the antenna. It was showing in the pictures on the listing, so I am asking for a refund as that was the only reason I was ordering the cover. Not sure why the price just went up to $12 as I only paid $9 last week. Just FYI, if you are buying a cover, ask if the antenna is included to be sure to not make the mistake I did. Uggh.

Well after searching through the internet for over 4 months ... I found what seems to be the issue.. If you take off the cover and check every single screw .. You might notice they are a tad lose.. Tighten all of them without stripping them and but the cover back on and check your gps... It fixed mines and some other ppl (source reddit)

i gotta try that...i used maps yesterday and my battery dumped down to 2 from using a social media app(instagram).....
so i had to play the game...
"Will You Get There Before Your Battery Dies...Restarting Maps Every 2 Blocks?!?!?!....Or Just Drive Back Home Because You Got Lost!?!?!?!"
real nail biter....with anxiety on my side in a special way

I have had GPS issues that seemed to start with the Marshmallow update. It got worse recently until it almost never worked, occasionally catching a break and working for a minute or 2 in Waze during my daily drive. I read around the various sites, tried tightening the screws etc.

Finally found a posting about turning off the "high accuracy" setting and went to using the GPS signal only. Bingo, my GPS is working again.

Hmm.. that actually may help. A friend who works in LG told me that the GPS antenna / connection part is lose on this device so they had to support it with small cushion for new batches.

Anyway I am going to RMA send it for 4th time. When it returns I am going to check screw myself and see if it helps :p

LG Repair Service simply reset the software and sent me the same device again. They are not even trying or read repair instruction / request.

Issuing RMA for the 5th time. This is beyond stupid and I have lost faith in LG at this point.
