Qik video chat isn't free?

according top the press release its available as an upgrade. I wonder how much?

To quote from the press release:

“With the launch of HTC EVO 4G, Sprint customers will be able to enjoy capabilities they have never experienced before with a new video chat service from Qik. The two-way voice and video capability will be available as an upgrade to the preloaded Qik app on HTC EVO 4G to enable conversational, interactive, real-time sharing between mobile devices or from mobile-to-desktop“.

Wow, I had taken that before to just mean it wouldn't be ready for wide release until then (not in time to preload it) since it failed a few times in the videos from the sprint event. This phone is turning into an increasing lack of bargain

The way it sounds to me is if you want to have a two-way video chat via EVO's, you'll probably have to buy the "Upgraded" version of Qik in the market for a 1 time fee.

Considering I don't know anyone with video chatting capabilities, I wouldn't need it.

If this is the case (Fee for the "Upgraded" version), Sprint sure is squeezing every penny out of people they possibly can.

i agree. sounds like a 1 time fee in the market.

It's either a one time fee or it is not ready for release, but I suppose they would just call that an update instead of upgrade.

And this is why people continue to love the iPhone over everything. It will undoubtedly come, out of the box, with video chat built right into a mobile ichat that will seamlessly integrate with ichat on the computer. i wouldn't be shocked to see video skype chat with it on launch, as well. Though you'll likely only be able to take advantage of it in wifi areas (guessing here). Tradeoffs, ugh

Let's hope that it will come pre-installed with the upgrade version of the Qik. That's one thing I like about the HD2, it has mobile office pre-installed as well as swype.

Wow guys.

If you have a problem with waiting for the evo upgrade for qik app, just go to the qik website, select your device and hit ok.

What it means is that qik will be pushed to your phone when you turn it on.

Qik's website and app has always been free. You will need to do and update to get the front facing camera to work.

The list of supported phones with links to the download. I am sure the evo will be add when it is released.

if that's true they really should have used the word "update" instead of "upgrade" in their release becase upgrade sure as hell sounds like you have to pay to get it. qik and sprint must have the same person writing their ambiguous releases.

I heard that but assumed he mispoke. It's been mentioned too many times that a special version of Qik was going to be preinstalled on the phone.

Not that it will be terribly useful as is.

Look at the front of the box. It clearly says, qik app, google maps, google earth, and pandora. All of those are free.

One of the presentation web write-ups mentioned how Qik phone-to-computer video is free, but that phone-to-phone video is part of an upgraded version of Qik, available in the app store.

that makes sense. basic qik is free but to get the functionality people want the most you have to pay. exactly like microsoft does with xbox live silver and gold.

hopefully google comes up with some sort of free video chat soon.

Let's hope you're correct that Qik 2 way video chatting would remain free. Cheers!

I bet thats the extra 10 bucks we are paying for premium services.

No I think he was saying that's the reason of paying 10, not an additional 10 or whatever. At least I hope not. I'm sure it comes with it. I mean it makes sense to. Let's not go crazy for something we don't no for sure.

I honestly think that's included within the $10 fee. I mean really see them charging for that too if it's already free on other phones.

The QIK live video phone to phone chat is not available for any other phone except the EVO at this moment

After the $10 fee Sprint added, I wouldnt be surprised if this app has a light but not free $3 a month or so fee.

To me, Qik is not that big of an app to charge this but who knows.

The only video to video app I want to see on this phone is Skype. I wouldnt see Skype charging for something it already does for free on computers.
