Qik video chat isn't free?

Very poor business decision on Qik's part. Their management apparently doesn't understand that they were an unknown brand/service before the EVO hit and that their position in the market does not give them the ability to charge for such a service.

What's great is that a free alternative, Fring, already demonstrated that its video chat implementation is actually pretty good both phone-to-phone and phone-to-PC.

More weight to the iPhone crowd. You know video ichat will be free (Yes, I know this is frings decision, not Sprints, but Ihope it doesn't hurt the Evo)

engadget just got word that qik will be an additional 4.99 MONTHLY! This bows BIG balls!! Thank you for fring!!!!

Qik charging $5 monthly for EVO 4G video chat? -- Engadget

Yep, looks like Fring is the way to go if I ever need to do any sext..... I mean Skype calls. I don't care how much cheaper Sprint is, I'm not looking to get nickle and dimed every month by anybody to use my phone regardless if it's Sprint or Quik

Tried looking earlier...what about Google Video? It works through browser (gmail) and wondering if Google will create an "app for that" or if they already have. Anyone know?

I hope beyond hope that once the iPhone 4G/HD comes out officially with it's implementation of video calling, Fring will update their codecs and plugins to work with iChat.

Fring, if you are listening, there's $4.99-9.99 (one time software purchase price) in it for ya!

Who else would pay Fring? I would do it in a heartbeat

shall we look at the ipad that doesn't include a card reader or usb out? wait, they are add ons.

ichat is free because apple developed it. Android as an OS is free. They are not subsidizing QIK so why shouldn't QIK be allowed to get paid for it's time and effort to create the program? As most said, it's probably a $5 one time upgrade. Is document editing free? No. You can view docs, but you have to pay to edit them. Yeah, what a ripoff
And this is why people continue to love the iPhone over everything. It will undoubtedly come, out of the box, with video chat built right into a mobile ichat that will seamlessly integrate with ichat on the computer. i wouldn't be shocked to see video skype chat with it on launch, as well. Though you'll likely only be able to take advantage of it in wifi areas (guessing here). Tradeoffs, ugh

Yeah, except the documentation in the picture states a monthly recurring charge of $4.99 billed via Paypal not a one time payment.

The ability to use Fring with Skype pretty much puts it at the top of the video chat food chain regardless if Qik is free or not.

Well Qik certainly lived up to it's name.

The phone isn't even released and its old unwanted news now.

I wont be paying for it thats for sure. Not when Google will come out with it for free soon anyways.

Plus as said already, we have Fring.

Nice knowing ya, Qik

Adios Qik, nice way of shooting yourself in the foot

Fring with Skype capability? Yes please.

Qik has a forum linked from their website. unable to post there now; at least on the topic of the $5 charge.

Qik can kiss my ARSE!!! Sprint already MAKING us pay an extra $10.. which i have no problem with, but all these other coming fees are getting crazy..

I dont see why google wont make their chat compatible with this for FREE...

Dumb. If they wanted to charge, they should've just made it a flat 30 bucks or something like that. I might have considered it. 5 bucks per month so that I can only talk to fellow EVO users? Of which I know only one? Nice.

I'll just wait for Google to inevitably implement it and use the freebies along the way to hold me over.

What a silly move by Qik.

agreed; after the first day or 2, this app will be hardly used, except to sext or show off to people..
video chat has been available on home phones for a long time, but it has always been seen as a "novelty"; do you REALLY want the callers to see you in your underwear, with "BedHead" and bloodshot eyes???

We should all be patient. Qik charging will lead to Qik extinction. Or will it? Nope, just the value of Qik will drop so low that Google will buy it, and then add it's tech to the Google/Android arsenal.

So it might take a few weeks or months, but it will be "free" compliments of no buyers and Google acquisition.

I'm glad everyone basically agrees this was a stupid move on their part. I could see a one time fee, but how do you justify a monthly charge?

they should have had a 30 days free period, so people could try it out and see if they like it; very stupid/greedy on their part to decide to charge a monthly fee before the masses can even see if they like the program..FAIL!!
