2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

Took my leaked phone in for a replacement due to the audio bug, and got my replacement. I received the OTA the same day, lol. My wife, who's been on 1.5 since she got the phone didn't get it till this morning.

quick question for those who have used the navigation feature on 2.1: is it accurate to your location? i only ask this because on 1.5, the gps on google maps will sometimes tell me that i am miles from where i really am..i assume the nav feature on 2.1 is much more accurate, considering it does turn by turn. but i just wanted to be sure.

It sounds like you may have your GPS turned off in your settings. You have to turn it on. Otherwise, it will try to locate you based on tower triangulation. If there's a big circle around the dot, that means it thinks you are somewhere inside the circle. With the actual GPS enabled, it narrows it down to just the dot and is VERY accurate.

Go to Menu > Settings > Location and make sure Location Setting is checked as well as Enable GPS Satellites.

I hope that helps.

I got my Droid Eric last December, with a promise that it would be updated from 1.5 to 2.X in January. Since then, I have been quietly lurking and learning in this forum. I received 2.1 by OTA at 9 AM this morning in suburban Dallas. It crashed after the download, saying that it needed another 25 MB memory and that was more than I had available. After uninstalling several apps and a couple of reboots, I finally got it up and running. This afternoon, I used the navigation to go to two pool stores and then back home. Not as good as my Navigon GPS, but sweet just the same. As I pulled in the driveway, it announced my trip was complete and popped up a street view photo of my house. Nice touch! Voice to voice translation with Google Translate and Talk To Me both rock. So does Google Goggles. The 7-screen snap view is great, too. DOOM still runs, which I didn't anticipate. So does PDAnet. Now if I could only get the voice dialer to work, I would be completely satisfied. Now at 62, I wonder what the technology will be in another 10 years.

I meant to type Eris, not Eric! The nav location is perfect as long as you have GPS turned on. Use the HTC toggle widgets for Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and Network. They are the quickest way to turn those functions on/off. If you want to troubleshoot GPS, use a third-party free app named GPS Status. Count the satellites, more fun than counting sheep.

Don't know if this has been said yet, but give this a try:

Phone (like you are going to make a phone call)

Once the pad has popped up type in the following: (replace letters with the appropriate numbers like you would dial on your home telephone/lan-line)

*#*#CHECKIN#*#*

You don't have to do anything else as the phone will go ahead and check in. I just did this on 2 Droid Eris phones with the stock 1.5, non-rooted, just purchased a couple of weeks ago. I was alerted to a 'System Update Available'. This just worked for me on 2 phones right now.

Just got my update notification. It happened right after I downloaded an app from the Market, but I dont' know if that had anything to do with it or not. I just got the Eris around 5 weeks ago, I'm in Portland, OR. It's downloading now. Woo HOO!:)

I think going it to download an app does the same thing as *#*#CHECKIN#*#*. It finds apps that are waiting to be installed and gives you a notification either way.

Some people don't think the OTA is found that way. Others do. I'm not sure. I keep trying it every once in a while just in case. Occasionally, app updates come through but still no OTA...

I tried doing the CHECKIN thing about an 30 min before, and it said "Check in sucessfull" but nothing popped up at that time. It only showed up right after I downloaded the new app.

Interestingly enough, I just tried it again and it came through this time!!!

Apparently, *#*#CHECKIN#*#* does go out and bring it in if it's ready for you to get! Cool! :)

Roommate jsut got OTA and we got phones 2 days apart. Hes on stock 1.5 and im on v3.

Doubt leak users will ever get OTA.

Actually I seen on a thread that downloading an app thats supported by verizon ota or google (something like that can't remember) can cause the update to pop up on your phone for download, very interesting your not the only person, and what app did you download?

All you have to do is go to the downloads section of the market or manually do the checkin thing. It will look to see if there are any OTA updates available at the time, 2.1 or otherwise. You don't actually have to be downloading anything to work, just checking in is all you need to do.
