Pre Orders?

Honestly, I think Verizon will choose NOT to do pre-orders to keep the hype rolling. They want to see lines outside of the stores. They want this to be huge. The more hype the better and forcing people to wait in line?

Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd...

Having never ordered a phone online, will it be available at Midnight on the 6th or sometime the next day? I really wish it was available on Thursday and get it on Friday.

i like that. and apparently so does VZW. I got a VZW rep to confirm no presales:

(in an email...)
Code:
Dear XXX XXX,

Good evening! My name is Antron and I will be more than happy to address your concerns regarding the presale of the Motorola Droid.

The Motorola Droid will not be available for presale ordering. You will have to wait until November 6, 2009 to order.

Thank you again for your email regarding presale options. I hope you continue to find the

As a long time Alltel now Verizon customer I was excited to get the Hero from Sprint and am in my 30 day trial until Nov 11 and have been LOVING the Hero, my wife got the pre and loves it as well, but the pre's voice radio is TERRIBLE and Sprint's voice signal is terrible at our home where verizon, alltel, att and tmobile users are all fairly weak here as well but they all can connect and hold calls with no problem where Sprint cant.

They charged me $110 and $4/mo for an airrave even though on the forums everyone was saying they were getting their airraves complimentary, but the way the phones jump between the weak signal and airrave is too unreliable.

So considering the additional monthly for the airrave the family plans between Verizon and sprint are pretty similar in features with verizon, same employee discount so basically it comes out to bout $6 more a month for a superior network and hopefully a superior droid phone just in time to save the day.

I think the droid will be pretty popular, but I'd be shocked if it was popular enough to create any significant lines or any real demand that would create product shortages. Techically it seems awesome to a techie like me but it is a terrible looking phone with poor ergonomics for a nontechie or someone who likes a stylish looking device.

However, consider this - when the iPhone was announced and then released, I would never have believed that there would be lines waiting for it, either - lo, and behold! There were....

Apparently you don't know many rabid Apple fans. I do. I knew it was going to be an instant hit, if only because of the logo on it. That's enough for some people. However, it turned out to be a pretty great device, so it caught on beyond that. I probably would have gotten one a year ago if it wasn't exclusive to AT&T (I hate AT&T). Right before I heard about the Droid, I was considering getting one anyway.

I'm taking the afternoon off next Friday to try to go get one.

I'd be there first thing in the morning, if I could, but sadly have a meeting at work. But, if that meeting gets cancelled, then I'll be taking the entire day off so I can be waiting outside the door at 9:00am.

But, as it stands now, won't be able to get there until more like 11:30am. :-(

I don't have to be into the office till Noon on Nov. 6th.

Yep....my new Droid in the AM, then a short 4 hr day....on a friday....

Ahhhhhh....beautiful.

I don't have work until 1pm so I will be in the store at 9AM. I really hope all the stores have Droids available that day, cuz if they try to tell me they will order it I would just as well order it online myself and get the instant rebate vs mail in.

Agree with that.

Some places will give the rebate instantly I remember. Like BJ's Wholesale...and Sam's club...Best Buy too I think.

Will BestBuy take preorders for people buying at full retail price?

Or will it only be for contract renewals?

I hope so because I just got on the list at my local store.

My local store said a pre-order phone has not hit their computer system yet but he took my name and number and told me I would be the first person to receive a call when a pre-order becomes available. He also said that if a pre-order did not become available I was the first person on the call list for when the phone comes in. By that time I will probably already have one from a Verizon store.

Don't bother with Best Buy.

I just called them.

They DO NOT honor the new every 2 of verizon.

Meaning, The droid on a 2 year agreement, WITH your new every two, should come out to be $99.99.

At Best Buy, sure, you'd get the instant rebate, but wouldn't be able to get your $100 off for new every two.

**** Best Buy.

As a follow-up, I called my local Verizon Store, they confirmed not only will I get my $100 mail in rebate, I'll get my new every two $100 credit towards the phone.

On Nov. 6th, out of the store the phone will cost me 199.99.
Plus my mail in rebate, once I receive it, total cost $99.99 for the Droid.

Perfect. =D

Just as an FYI, my local Best Buy (Vienna, VA) said they had no information on pre-orders yet. I will check again at lunch or after work.

I forgot about the new every two deal. I guess I will stick with VZW.

Also - on DriodDoes Twitter - To answer everyone who asked this question - Droid will be available for purchase online a little after midnight - say 12:30 am on the 6th.

I have noticed that online, Verizon typically takes out the mail-in-rebates and just gives you the discount. Is that usually the case?

Yes. The only issue would be, you wouldn't get the phone to mid to late week the following week. =(

Rebates don't take THAT long guys. LOL

And it's just $100.

The only thing I'm worried about is attempting to go to my local VZW store and them not have the phone at all. That's what happened to me when I went to get the Touch Pro 2 the day it was released. I had to call and order it. They are still yet to have it displayed in the store. I only live 20 minutes north of Phoenix,AZ. That would be a major suckpill if they ended up not having it in the store and was only available for call in or online ordering.

Has this crossed anybody else's mind? I don't anticipate huge lines like the Iphone had at its release, but I do intend on small lines, so I am getting to the store a few hours before opening so I can be first in line for it.

Well. My philosophy on the matter is simple.

I either get the phone on launch day at a VZW store, ( in most areas, including my po-dunk area we have 4 ) getting my new every two, AND the mail in rebate, or if none of those stores have it, I order it online with INSTANT rebates to get the phone for $99.99 right away, and receive it next week.

/shrug

Either way, I get the phone for what I SHOULD. Rather than go to Best Buy, where I am 100% sure I'll be able to get the phone, but also 100% sure I'll be paying $100 dollars MORE for the phone.

I've waited a year for this phone, if Mike the nice salesman at the VZW store who took all my info down and "Guaranteed" me a Droid on Friday morning lied to me, and doesn't keep one for me...I'll survive. LOL A couple more days won't kill me.

Though I'll stick plow his manfield with my boot before leaving the store.

I mean, it's only fair. :p

From a comment on some site:
OK folks...just talked with Best Buy (she actually told me, "no" then was kind enough to call me back to tell me she just got email confirmation).

You have to go into any Best Buy Mobile store (including Best Buy "regular" as long as they have a mobile section within the store...so that's just about every Best Buy I've ever heard of) and they require a $50 deposit. Max limit is 5 phones.

Again, worthless, considering they don't honor your "New every Two" discount.

Yeah, I hear ya...I am more of the instant gratification kinda guy, and want it for the weekend! I could order it over the phone, and pay the extra $15 for saturday overnight, but whats the fun in that? Probably what I'll have to end up doing.

I will call local stores today and get some further info on if they will have it or not, but I'm betting on the "we don't know and won't know until the day comes" line of bs, like normal, lol.
