Help Text message automatically answering calls

Hey, guys... I have a weird problem with my S8+ and wondering if you can help.

Sometimes when I receive a call, the ringing abruptly stops, and the caller is sent a text message that says, "Sorry, I can't talk right now. Call back later." This seems to be totally random, whether I pick up or touch the phone or not, has happened to both mobile and landline callers, and seems to happen at no particular duration of the ringtone (sometimes it'll happen almost immediately; other times it will happen several seconds into the ringtone).

I've looked through all the settings I can think of that would affect this, but just can't seem to find what's making this happen (and how to turn this off!). I'm sure I'm missing something...

Any thoughts? Thank you!

When someone calls you, on the bottom of the call screen you'll see it says 'send massage' when you press or swipe on that, it gives you a few common messages to send instead of replying to the call.

The message that you quoted, is the first suggestion that is given in the quick reply option. I'm not sure how it happens that the message is sent automatically, but i would imagine that disabling this feature will stop the issue.

To disable it open your dialer, there go to settings, call settings, call rejection, rejection messages, select and delete all of them.

Also check the following screenshots and double-check the settings are the same.

Thank you, @A bochur! I went into my dialer settings, but I don't have an option for Call Rejection or Rejection Messages. I do have a "Quick decline messages" setting, but when I click it, it says there are no current messages set (and only the option to make a new one). And there's no option to turn it on or off-- it just prompts me to make add a new message.

@joeyakaspce1130, thank you too! I've checked all of those settings, and I already have them set exactly like that.

Hmmm...

Is your home a 'trusted place', whereas you don't have to put in a pin to unlock your phone? It happened to me when I had that set and when I turned it off, the quick text messaging phone calls stopped.

See what happens when someone calls you and you slide up on the send message option. Does it have the quick response suggestions? Not really sure what i would do either way, but i guess it doesn't hurt to check

Did you ever find a connection between the two? Cuz i don't see why that would trigger the phone to send the message...

I had it set for about a week, I was outside my phone was inside the house and my sister called 5 times to see what was wrong because she got that text every time she called. When I looked in my texts, there it was 5 times (the call you back) text.

So I turned off trusted places and had her call me again, it had never happened again.

@MightyFurcules is your S8+ from Verizon? If it is, follow these instructions:

Tap the Message+ icon . If not available, navigate: Apps > Message+.
Tap the Menu icon (located in upper-left).
Tap Auto Reply.
Tap Stop.

If not, do you have a 3rd party messaging app?

Thank you to everyone for the help!

@A bochur, when I slide up with the messages option, this is what I get (see attached image). There are no messages set.

@almath, I don't have any trusted locations set. I have several trusted devices, but none of them are ever connected when this happens.

@joeyakaspce1130, I do have Verizon, but I don't use Message+. I use Chomp SMS Pro. I looked through all the settings for that, and I don't see anything related to answering calls. Just for the heck of it, I just enabled Message+ and looked through the settings, and Auto-Reply is off anyway.

Again, thank you to everyone for your continued help!

I'm starting to wonder if it's your phone that's sending the message, and not something wrong on the carrier side. That wouldn't really make sense but who knows.

Or, it could be a defective screen that is registering a touch that is not actually there....

Have you noticed any other times that the screen seems to have pressed something in the same general swipe area as the answer phone call?

Thank you again, guys!

So it happened again this morning. The phone rang for just a second, and it quickly stopped. When I checked it a few minutes later, the text was sent to the caller.

Before I picked it up or even moved it to check what had happened, I called it from my house line-- thinking maybe it would exhibit the same behavior. It rang (played the ringtone) for the full duration, and went to voicemail as normal. Didn't do the auto-reply thing.

@johnlgalt, that's a good thought-- but I've never had a problem of any sort with any part of my screen.

So it continues! :)

Not really sure why it's doing it. Maybe you have bad reception and it's sending them instead of going to voicemail. Have you tried deleting the quick decline messages in phone, settings, quick decline messages? Maybe if there's nothing to send it won't send anything.

@MightyFurcules, so I saw this online about an edge lighting setting called quick reply. When it's turned on you get that text message. Mine was turned on I guess by default. This might be the problem.

Thank you for your continued help, everyone!

@Shotgun84 -- Yup-- did a data cache clear already.

@almath -- There might be something there. How did you get to that particular setting? I can get to Edge screen settings, but nothing related specifically to Quick Reply.

Thank you!

@MightyFurcules, When you click on Edge Lighting, there's 3 dots at the top press that quick reply. That's how you turn it off.

Do you have the s8 or s8 plus? I've never used the always on display myself but just turned it on to see if I can find that setting. I can't. The closest I can find on my s8 is if I back out of the turn always on display on and then go to settings, display, edge screen. The three dots at the top of that page only say contact us.

@Shotgun84 I have an S8+, on Edge screen there are options as to how you want to set lighting. If I tap on Edge Lighting that's where I get the screen which has the three dots.

I don't use always on display by the way, 'edge' is a separate option under display setting.

Exact same problem on a Galaxy S9+, for what it's worth.

There REALLY needs to be a way to turn the quick reply "feature" off (or control it better), without disabling Edge Lighting and/or Edge Screens imho.
