Official HTC Hero 2.1 Update now (5/19) on Sprint.com

yes, that is the link for 2.1 - i already had HTC Sync 2.0.8 from when I bought the phone, it worked just fine

Everything I've read indicates that you must first DL HTC Sync to your computer, and then download the update as well in order to transfer it and install it onto your phone.

Having HTC Sync on the phone is a given.

i was talking about my desktop - i already have htc sync 2.0.8 on my desktop, why does it seam like i'm the only one?

Yep...there's an issue with BT....It works when you call out, but when you get calls it doesn't work at all......

Holy crap. All this time cooking this sucker and they still can't get it right.

Any info on if AVRCP still works (able to FF/reverse songs, voicemail, etc.)? Or if that was borked too?

I don't think it's the dev's fault ...the leak came like that...but I am 100% that will get fixed within a couple of days....

Trust me...I been there when we had the PRI issue and within hours we solved the issue.......

Is this official, the same as the leaked 2.1 last week, bit for bit or matching hash? If not, has Fresh gotten ahold of this one and updated accordingly? I really want the update now, but not the Sprint bloat and don't wanna lose root as I found a bug I don't like on the 2.1 Moment update and don't wanna take a chance on my phone (i.e. hero).

Wait, are you saying they broke something that was previously working?

Well I did the Leaked RUU update from Fresh's ROM ...so it's been like that since..

but before that...my BT was working perfectly fine and I was running Damage Control 2.08.1 .......

when DC 2.09 comes out....I'm 100% Damageless will fix that BT issue...maybe that's why he's taking his time on his ROM...he wants to give us a great working ROM..

yes it's official, yes it has the same hash etc... the only difference is the version will show "2.1 eclair" now and the leaked version did not

IF YOU DON"T WANT TO LOSE ROOT ACCESS THEN DO NOT UPDATE!!!

It might or might NOT be the exact same thing, only time will tell. No need to rush. Personally, now that the official release is out, if it's nothing short of spectacular, I will finally ROOT and run one of the ROM'S for sure! specially with BT Functionality and Tethering on the ROM'S...

Love my Hero and perfectly happy with 1.5 for now ;)

:D

Now, I'm confused.

Are you saying BT isn't completely working in the official update?

Or not working in some cooked ROM?

has any1 noticed under firmware version it says 2.1update1. Maybe this is a 2 part update? any ideas? So far 2.1 works awesome.

I have had problems with BT with the original 1.5 Cupcake version. Never worked right so what is the difference????

I had no problems with BT in 1.5. Worked just fine for me.

But I want to know what's borked in the official update that people have reported. So far, folks have only said "problems with BT" - nothing specific and not "same problems with BT".

Installed 2.1 =(
A frown because I used mybackup and it didn't work. My phone is like new, only with wear and tear. I love losing 6 months of phone usage.

Oh, and it's nice finding that your contacts never synched with Google, and now they're all gone. [Insert string of expletives here]

Pardon my poor wording. Yes I know it's official... but are you certain it's bit for bit the exact same build? Another comment about 'time will tell' sorta conflicts w/ that notion.

I'm mostly just interested to know if Fresh is going to take this build, remove the bloat, and rls. an update... does anyone know? I'm on 1.5 but don't wanna be stuck w/o root or the inability to get fixes because I feel this will be the last update for the Hero by Sprint.

One of my concerns is a bug w/ the contacts manager on the Moment. I think Sense will resolve that, but just don't wanna be stuck!

Flipz has confirmed that 2.1.1 is built from the official release.

It was spoken about here:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-sprint-hero/81304-warning-official-2-1-a.html

As for the "Bluetooth Issues". I can only speak for myself but mines working perfectly. I received 3 calls all through bluetooth in the last hour and they all worked how they should. I also made a few calls through bluetooth and those are fine as well. Synced with my laptop through bluetooth and again fine.

As for contacts...make sure you sync with google before updating to 2.1 and check googles website to make sure it worked or you will loose your contacts.

The contacts worked alittle toooo well. I got every contact in the world now since I guess the phone synced not only with my Google contacts but also Facebook contacts.

I'm not running the "official update" but a ROM made from the leaked RUU ....

but I still say the leaked and official RUU's are both different although they have the same hash............just my 2 cents.

and yes I'm having BT issues...works, but calls don't go through it.....but when I call ..it works great...

Guess I'm glad I'm still on Fresh 2.0d then! lol

That would make me think maybe theres a possibility the leaked ruu and the official are indeed different. Maybe thats why the week delay was to patch a last minute list of things. I got a feeling we'll see a patch in the future to fix and addd some missing stuff like the missing mic on the default keyboard. I shouldnt have to buy better keyboard to use a built in feature.

What baffles me about the update is the things that they changed that weren't actually "broken" in 1.5

For example, the controls in the camera. In 1.5 they would switch from portrait to landscape depending on the orientation of the phone. Made sense, worked like every other application pretty much. The documentation talked about it, so clearly they intended it to work this way, it wasn't a bug.

Now, in 2.1, the controls stay in landscape. No matter what. So, apparently, someone at HTC said, "you know what, I think people only take pictures in landscape, so let's turn off that code to reorient the controls. Even though it's already in the code, and no one at all has ever complained about it"

Seriously, why would they do that? Job security? Fix what's broken, but leave the things that worked alone. No wonder these releases take so long.

I seriously doubt we'll see too many more updates of any kind for this phone, if any, at least official ones. My guess is that HTC considers this "as close as we're going to get it", and any additional development time is going to focus on newer OS's, versions of Sense, and new hardware. They only have so many programmers, and what's new will always take precedence.

If there turns out to be some sort of catastrophic bug, that of course would get attention. But, I suspect that's why they leak ROM's. They know there isn't anything too bad, just small niggling issues that people will learn to live with.

That's why I wasn't going to give up root. I think all the future enhancements (and fixes) are going to come from the community. Which, given the state of the "official" release, doesn't seem like a bad thing.

Hopefully the dev's will come up with a way to root the new kernel, so everyone who hasn't rooted yet (or lost it by upgrading) can come along.

I ran the second leaked RUU, and after having updated to the Official, a lot of the lag that I was experiencing, as well as most of the bugs, have completely disappeared. I no longer experience lag in the landscape keyboard. The Messaging app is no longer lagging, my Bluetooth works fine, and there is no dialer lag. Not to mention the official update is signed with Google so it can see the protected apps. There seem to be small, but noticeable differences between the leak and the official.
