Help Merge Text Message Threads from Different Numbers

I have some text message threads that I would like to merge together. I have contacts who have gotten new phone numbers so I would like to merge the text message thread from their old number and the one from their new number so that I don't have two text message threads from the same person. Can this be done? If so, how?

I think this could be done w/Google Hangouts in the past. I don't know of any other texting apps that does this.

Not an easy thing, unfortunately. Here is a thread from another forum talking about the work arounds they did.

That thread is interesting... and I already have SMS Backup & Restore... I may try the method described (after making good backups!!).

Have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ on Android 8.0.0 (although it says an update is available now).

Yep, 1st thing I did was just add my son's new phone # to his existing contact record (which still had his old phone # in it as well).

I then deleted his old number, thinking that all the text messages were linked to the CONTACT... but since it started a new thread between us, obviously the messages are linked to the PHONE NUMBER and not the CONTACT.

I'm not sure on what you trying to accomplish but your stock messaging app will keep all your messages no matter what you delete or misplaced on your third party messaging app

Bugman (and the old OP) are trying to merge two text threads that were created by someone switching phone numbers. Main thread:

That's not been the case from what I've seen, deleting a text from a 3rd party app like Textra will also delete it from the stock app.

Will be interesting to hear if the suggestion for @bugman58 worked.
