Awesome gift, less awesome sequelae

I was given an Ascent small quadcopter. It looks pretty cool and fun. After I went through hell extracting it from its packaging, I found out that it's "supposed" to be charged by COMPUTER usb only, which is great because I don't have one. Is this for real? I had never heard of such a thing. Maybe the company is involved in manufacturing computers, chips, or something that way. Of course, I guess that gives me yet another reason to rush out and buy one.

Yeh, been there, and done that in Christmas 2018 with my dad, and it was present from one of dad's friends, that was bought cheap from Ebay. In the end with gave it to the neighbour's children to play with and demolish.

Of course, I guess that gives me yet another reason to rush out and buy one.

My advice is, don't do it.

If you want a decent and reliable small drone, buy a DJI Mavic 3 or something.

If it came with a USB charging cable only, I think you can just use any charging brick to charge the drone.
^ This. There's no reason to use a computer, per se. Just plug it into any USB charging brick. Obviously, make sure the port(s) on the brick are the right size, and then go for it. All they're really saying is "we're too cheap to provide an electric power cord/plug...."

Pinkie swear it won't blow up anything if I do that (I hope)? Do I just grab a regular charging cord for a phone and then plug that into an outlet without a surge suppressor? I'm looking forward to flying this thing maybe before the next century...

do it all the time. just check to see if the either the drone or the charging brick gets hot.....warm is fine, but really hot is not good.

Yes, just make sure it's the right sized USB plug. Any recent charging brick/cord should work fine with any recent gadget, like the one you have, as long as they're using the same size USB plug. Remember the older ones, where you had to orient them a specific way in the phone? The newer ones aren't like that--and they look wider than the old ones. If you're unsure about anything, post pics and maybe that will help.

It's the Ascent ASC-950. Since it uses gesture technology as well as a controller, I might be able to avoid installing the 3 triple As. On the other hand, I probably should.

I would think that if it has a battery compartment, it should have batteries. I think that I saw a similar copter and perhaps the same at the party I had at the cabin over New Years. It's a fun toy. Be certain to turn off your ceiling fan if you have one. The one I saw responded to close hand gestures and avoided ceiling and walls as well as people. Not so for the ceiling fan. :)

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the "hardware". Let's hope this can straighten out things. The instruction manual should help, too.

For what it's worth, I at last set up this thing maybe four months later. That shows how I get busy with nothing. Anyway, I was able to charge it without a computer. I just used the wall wart from that worthless qlink tablet. At least I was able to fly it for a little while. Of course one of the rotors got damaged and now it kind of scooches along the floor, not really enough to make a cat nervous. There are two spare rotors for each color, black and gray.. I guess one's supposed to be a and the other b, but I'll be darned if I know which is which. I sure can't put it back on the quadcopter. I should probably either give up on this stuff or find some big chunky model that can't get hurt or is super easy to repair without a flashlight, tweezers, etc.
