Here's Hesse saying 4G is free again

Nope, I have a better idea- get the Evo and get Sprint to offset the fee with a credit. Problem solved.

Congrats on that - so why the need to argue about it? Hate to disappoint anybody, but really complaining on here accomplishes nothing. I mean yea it's good to have a way to relieve stress, but Hesse's secretary isn't going to be like "Holy shit, Dan! There's a 4 page thread on Android Forums complaining about the $10 surcharge...we should rethink it." It seems like you already went through the appropriate avenue to let your voice be known to Sprint, soooo....

These threads will continuously spawn, there is no ending.

This charge should have been marketed MUCH differently.

While I agree with that, I think the assumption that any price increase will be associated with 4G regardless of how they worded things. Maybe it would lessen it a little, but who knows. Sprint says its a "Premium Data Charge". They never claim it's specifically for 4G, yet everybody automatically assumes it is.

The best thing Sprint could do is come out and specifically state what the $10 charge is, if it isn't for 4G.

Personally I was pissed and thought about switching to an iPhone or an Incredible, until I looked up what those monthly plans are. Made me realize paying $80 is pretty damn good when looking at the big picture. I mean I pay $70 a month for my piece of absolute trash Instinct and use no data on it because it sucks so hard - I'm more pissed about getting to the cleaners with that than a $10 "premium data" surcharge.

Wrong. When Sprint offset my fee with a credit, they specifically told me that they were concerned about all the negative attention the fee was causing. They said they were having meetings to determine what to do about the fee, including possibly getting rid of it altogether.

Without people complaining about it all over the place, Sprint would just bury it. So it was threads like this one that in the end caused Sprint to offset my fee. If nobody had publically complained about it, there is no way Sprint would have budged on it.

Even if the $10 fee isn't for 4G (which we all know it is), and it turns out it is for using more data or whatever, Hesse still said there would be no charge. He specifically said we would be using more data too (at no extra charge), so that would still be a lie.

Show me a CEO that doesn't lie and I'll show you some oceanfront property in Arizona.

Not saying he shouldn't be held accountable in some way, but I don't see why you're so bent out of a shape about it. It's not like he personally told you this and then after you walked away he said "Screw that guy LOL!"

You keep saying that and I have yet to hear him say that.

No where in the clip does he say that there would be no additional charges only that they can give you more for less.

So your saying that Sprint should never raise its fees and stay at their price point forever, after spending billions on network up grades, expansion and equipment??

I would like to see how you run your business.. Where additional costs aren't passed on to the customer..

I'm bent out of shape about it because he clearly said there would not be any charge, got me all excited for 2 month, and then BAM- extra charge.

Bait and switch...

Watch the clip again. He very clearly says there will be no extra charge. Again, copied and pasted from my previous post, with emphasis added so you don't miss this time:
At the :39 mark he says, "In essence what we're doing with 4G, is we're throwing in the HD channels for free, uh, because we're not charging any more, and we're giving customers more. You get more gigabytes, per month, in your rate plan, and you're going to be using a lot more gigabytes..."

Clearly, he says they are NOT charging any more for 4G, and they also know people will be using it more than 3G.

its obvious that you we disagree on the point he made..

My question is why do you think they should not charge the fee to recoup the cost of building out the network??

The device will consume more data and the 4g network will improve the device and network quality and improve the 3g reliability.

So whats wrong with them charging more for rolling out the new network.. You still benefit from it and they get to recoup their costs?

Where are you at that you think 4g is not coming to you?

He said there will not be any extra charge. Period. There is no disputing that- they were his exact words.

We are not discussing if you want to give Sprint more money, or if you think they deserve more money, or anything else. The fact is, Hesse clearly said we would not be charged, and now we are being charged extra.

And I never said 4G is never coming to me. I'm sure I'll get it at some point. But I don't have it right now so why should I be charged right now?

You sure he wasn't talking about the wireless hotspot devices? The 4G enabled overdrive doesn't have an extra cost for 4G. Context is a beautiful thing and I'd like to hear exactly what he's talking about and don't give me "he's hold an EVO so he must be talking about that."

If the guy is giving an interview regarding the Evo, at the Evo launch, while holding and gesturing with his Evo...

If you still don't think he is talking about the Evo then you have issues...

Actually those words were use, but it never related to wimax or 4g being free

But you heard want you wanted to hear..

I guess the 10 dollar fee says me meant other wise now doesn't it??

Did you hear about the 10 dollar fee or was that misunderstood by you as well?

Well he specifically said "4G", and he specifically said it would be "free" and specifically said they would not be "charging any more" for it. So if you didn't hear that, then you need to watch it again- this time with an open mind. I am not interpreting what he said, those were his exact words.

Perhaps someone who was at CTIA and heard the entire Hesse presentation/Q&A could chime in? I'm sure if someone at CTIA specifically asked "will I be able to use the Evo on my current SE plan with no additional cost and with the enriched data experience on 3G and 4G", then we'd know a little better what the actual context and intent were.

I know there were a lot of questions about whether Sprint would be adding or changing it's plans specifically for or because of the Evo, and Hesse was attempting to address that as well.

Every site that was there reported that Hesse said 4G would not cost any extra. And yes, everyone was questioning that before the Hesse interview. These guys saying they don't know what he was talking about (even tough he was sitting there with an Evo in his hand, lol) have their head in the sand.

Everyone here is arguing about something we don't know for sure. We don't know what the enriched data services are. Maybe its something else you don't or we don't know about. But as many have said, if you don't want to pay extra, you don't need the phone, now do you? Quit your whining, and pony up or shut up.

Quit your whining, and pony up or shut up.

Come on. You can't say you don't check all the comments out for entertainment every day, can you? The $10 has given me at least one of the best laughs I have every day. I've already asked Santa for $10 Sprint Evo gift cards this year.:)

He was talking about the EVO's 4g. If not, why would he mention minutes and text being a given in the future and the question would be about data?
