Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

my concern is that it's being marketed in kind of the wrong way...or that people will have to rethink the way they view their phones and data connections.

Too many people think of wimax as just "faster internet/data" and are disappointed when it drains battery a bit or isn't as fast as they dreamed.

The way you ought to look at wimax is like a wifi hotspot that pretty much blankets your whole city. It may not always be super fast but chances are if you are in a city covered by wimax and you need to do something data intensive, you will turn on your wimax radio, do your thing, and then turn it off...much the way you do with wifi on any other smart phone. Typically you don't leave it running if it's sitting in your pocket because there is no point. You only fire up wifi or wimax when you need to stream a video or browse the web or whatever.

If they advertised it more as access to a citywide hotspot rather than a faster version of what they are used to, i think people's expectations will be a little more realistic. Not only that but they can focus on this aspect when talking about the $10 "premium" data fee. Imagine advertising it as "and for only $10 per month, you have access to every sprint city-wide hotspot across the us."

instead, you're going to get thousands of people leaving it on all day and then flooding the media with reports of crap battery life, etc.

it's 'not a 4g fee'!!! Arrgghh

Bill,

Can you elaborate more on the speech to text we have been hearing a little about? Can I open a text message and talk and it'll write my words and say send? Any help and time is appreciated.

where ever there is a box you can write text in, you can speak what you want to write..you have to press the send button though lol

Watchable but strange...I swear some of the demos had these videos playing full-screen. Is there a setting somewhere?
But this is a movie that was compressed and sized for my phone. It was never meant to be played on a big tv. I forget the video size, but it's something like 320 x 200. Can't expect too much from that. If there are other ways of playing movies from the phone to the tv - maybe Hulu on one of those, but I haven't found the right source yet.

I really hope that is an encoding issue. Thanks for the pic it did a great job :) what about outputing pictures to the screen? that's another use I want to put the HDMI to :)
Thanks for taking the time to go over this!
The pictures you take with the 8 megapixel camera look great on the TV. I mentioned yesterday that they look almost as good as they do on my computer screen. The gallery has a slide show mode, so that's a good way to show pictures to a group of people.

thank you Bill. I just ordered the cable for a total of $18 (shipping and tax included). I figured why wait for Monoprice, even tough I would have saved about $10 probably (current HDMI mini (Type C though, not D) on Monoprice is $6 + shipping)

Bill, did they use UPS for shipping? How long did it take to arrive? (did you use ground?)

Also, I;m glad you are back, buddy. I always look for your posts.Cheers!
Thanks, skpd. The ship by FedEx. I selected 3 day saver and had it in two business days. I ordered it last Friday about midnight and it was delivered yesterday.

Oops. 3 back to back posts. TS is going to be upset with me. :)

That's why I called it a "premium data fee". I was just giving my opinion on how they *should* market this. It would be a lot easier sell if they presented it as a charge for access to any city-wide Wimax hotspot around the US. That way they could still tack on the charge and make their bottom line while not pissing off the folks who don't have Wimax in their area. It would be more like you are paying for access to the growing number of Wimax networks so as you may visit or work in a city with the service, you will have unlimited access to it.

IDK If any of you have been put on to it, But there's this website called appbrain.com that lets you pick all the apps you'd want on your android phones and then once you get the appbrain app on your phone, whatever apps you selected online will show up on your phones!!! It's really bad ass...all you have to do is sign up and your good to go.. I already picked 27 apps I want on my EVO

Thanks, I wasn't sure and had given my friend my extra stylus to use when he got the EVO. So I can't use my nails neither I have to get used to my finger tips? I use my nail now sometimes. I'm sure i'll get used to it.

I also asked Bill in another post, which I can't find, if using the finger nail works, he said no. So I'm confused to whether the Evo has the new MaxTouch Sensors or not. Here's an article about it:

HTC Incredible and EVO 4G to feature new maXTouch sensors

I cannot speak to the validity of the article, but I can confirm that the Evo DOES NOT work with a stylus, fingernails, or with gloves on.

I can confirm that the Incredible does not work with these things either. Furthermore, Atmel doesn't make these claims in their overview of the mxt224:

Atmel Products - Touchscreens - mXT224

"The mXT224 is a 224-node highly configurable touchscreen controller which is part of Atmel's maXTouch

it would require a stylus made especially for capacitive screens. i have one but it works ok on my hero, but i believe it will work better on the evo with the max touch sensor

Does the phone really take that long to boot up?!?!

The original Storm is faster than how long it seems in the phone dog review!

there was a post about swype a few days ago and something about how it collects private information including passwords, account information etc. i contacted swype since i couldn't believe they would actually do something like that and this is their response,
