Froyo Wi-Fi hotspot feature to be left unblocked (read "free") by sprint???

Everyone must have forgotten that both Sprint and Palm promised tethering with the Pre and then about a month before launch, that feature disappeared. Leaving Palm going "WTF?" and Sprint was mum on the topic.

Sprint will block what they want, and not tell you about it.

that or the 30 fee is to get a quick cash flow... there is no way the 30 was gonna stay around for ever anyway, atleast not with the current plans on board. i say it might drop down a bit in price when this happens... if this happens

I honestly don't understand why they even put the development time into this app if it's coming in Froyo and they are just going to enable it for free. I'm guessing the app just uses some pretty basic iptables-style routing that is already built into the OS so it wasn't terribly hard to make.

Either way maybe they just won't advertise the OS's native WiFi abilities or create some sort of value-add for theirs (for example, customer support). I just found out today that HTC Sync lets you tether your phone to your laptop for free, they certainly aren't putting that bullet-point on the posters anywhere.

Anybody know if the mobile hotspot will show up as an ad-hoc connection or as an access point? Point being, I hear consoles and PSP and DS, etc. won't connect to ad-hoc.

Who in their right mind would want to tether a phone to a game console like xbox360?

I'm guessing that Sprint didn't do free hotspot with Pre because no one else had at that point. By the time Pre made it to others, Palm had to do something to get them unloaded. I'm sure Pre hotspots aren't even a blip on the radar. Sprint will figure that out too and then drop the charge.

If sprint killed the $30 add on, and kept the mandotory $10 add on with wifi tethring and no data cap, that would sell.

I'm not worried about the $30 charge for mobile hotspot. The evo has already been rooted they just need to touch up and release it and we'll all be happy non-paying hotspot junkies

My idea would apply to the other 95% of people who don't know what root is.

I've been saying for a while now that the $30 fee will go away. I think it's there so they don't get clobbered in the first couple of months with a shite tun of mobile wifi-ers. Of course, I hear the the Mobile Hotspot is free for 30 days so my theory ma be weak.
