Official 4G/WiMAX Coverage Areas

I was told by acct srvcs that the "South Florida" area (Dade, Broward, West Palm) will have active 4G by end of Summer.

LOL Actually I didnt pre-order, I called every radioshack/best buy that morning and they were the only ones around that had a couple in stock :)

that's f'd up, they wouldn't sell me one so i had to drive all the way to the one i went to. i was literally a block away from the one you went to. i called them and they said they were reserved. WTF. oh well, at least i got it!!!

i heard from someone in radio shack and the sprint in Dolphin Mall that 4G would come by the end of this month ... maybe first few days of July .. that would be awesome since Miami would get good coverage in my point of view ... This is a waiting game .. we know is coming just don't know when . :)

If you were making a list of reasons to get the phone and adding a weight to each item I would put 4G on the middle of your list. WiMax (the technology) will have a difficult time piercing walls making your signal spotty and unreliable. It will mature over a long period of time but possibly could be replaced by LTE later.

However, as I was pointing out in another thread, remember speed tests are only a small piece of the puzzle when measuring your 'experience'. Latency is another factor. And, WiMax has a bigger pipe to push data through even if your overall speed isn't what you were hoping. Speed can also be affected by how much free time the CPU of your phone has at that moment. IE, it takes CPU to process those packets. Your phone may be in the middle of hopping towers or negotiating a new signal or (x,y,z). These things would have a minimal impact but you get the point.

If you are purchasing the Evo simply to see 15mb on a speed test using 4G you will be disappointed. But I would encourage anyone to not dismiss Sprints 3G data network. I've been a long time hater of Sprint overall (customer service, spotty coverage). I haven't used them in over a decade and always suggested people choose them last for service. However, their data network is probably one of the best out there. And, over the past three years they've done a good deal of work improving their spotty coverage.

Anyway... my point... The only _real_ way to test the phone is measure the experience overall. How responsive do web pages feel? How responsive do sites like Google and MSN load (where you know the other end isn't slow)? You have to measure these things yourself as its a personal decision and choice whether they feel snappy to you.

To me... 3G or 4G doesn't matter as I've been wildly surprised at how responsive the net has been compared to the incredible I was evaluating and my iPhone 3GS of the past two years. Kudos to Sprint in my humble opinion. *Golf Clap*

Just a comment about sprint customer service:

In 2001-2003 their CSReps were douchenozzles to the max.

Sometime about 2004 they totally changed. Maybe because they started losing customers? Don't know.. but I've been totally happy with sprint customer service for 5+ years.

I was in/around the Erwin Center for about 3.5 hours on Saturday and had a solid 4G signal inside and out. I uploaded a 1-minute 720p video (about 30MB) to Youtube and it took a little less than 10 minutes. Web page load times were also pretty fast the entire time.

I live in NW Austin (off Scofield Ridge, north of Fry's) and the 4G signal in my apartment is mostly absent, but I'm just barely in a pocket of non-coverage anyway. When I stand on my balcony I get 1 bar of 4G. Not bad for an area that supposedly doesn't have coverage.

I work in a large concrete building in central Austin and I don't get any 4G at all inside.

In all of this, I would like to echo what a couple others have said about Sprint's 3G. Based on my experience, web pages with 3G load admirably - noticeably slower than Wifi/4G but only slightly. I have no complaints, but I didn't get the phone just for 4G.

I live at braker and 35 and im lucky to get 1 bar on the 4g. im disapointed as well. at work i cant get jack shit...(lamar and 12th st). and id like to also add that the wifi pick-up on the evo blows. my evo says signal strength poor if i go mor then 10 feet from my router. i thought it was my router but its the same at my buddies house. anyone else having this problem? i just need to know if i should take my phone back or not. help me out.

reppin da atx baby.....

Here's my two cents on my past few days of use with my new EVO as far as speeds go.... Even with max 4G bars in downtown Honolulu, I'm topping out at about 2.5-2.7 down. More average speed with full signal is about 1.5-2. I've tried it out on the east side, in town, and over on the west side of Oahu. My friend uses Clearwire 4G modems, and he says he can get about 3-5 down, depending on the time of usage.

What I AM impressed with is Sprint's 3g service.. I'm consistently getting 1-1.5 down. Not even really worth turning on the 4g service and wasting battery!

I'm a former N1 user with Tmobile.. and their 3G service was junk. The rare max speeds I got were about 800-1K, tops. Usually it was more like 300-400k. (And they supposedly have HSDPA+ here). Also, I got zero 3G service in my house with Tmob... I get full bars with Sprint and about 1-2 bars 4G

(On a side note, my wife has the Incredible with VZW, and speedtests on hers with full 3G signal is about 1-1.2 tops, usually more 700-800, so looks like Sprint 3G FTW)

POINT: I'm disappointed with the 4G. I wasn't expecting 10mbs down, but I was at least hoping to get 3-4. With my great 3G speeds, its not even worth turning on most the time. This being Oahu and all, its like comparing apples and oranges, but my thinking is that it would be easier here than on the mainland to get broader coverage, since you have a limited range.

Can I hear from my Austin folk about 4G service in our city? Im on the northwest side of town off 183 a few exits before Lakeline mall. Where are you and what kind of speed are you getting with 4G?

Well I have used it twice in Austin TX (Lady Bird Lake) and in the Buda area. Buda was a bit slower though still faster than 3g and when I was at the lake it was super fast.

When I was in maui, it was the same way when 3g was rolled out. Started really weak then got really good.give it time.

Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using Tapatalk Pro.

shit i miss paradox . 1 drinks baby hell yeah. i never used wifi on my hero. i wonder if was any better? the only place i get get full 4G in on lamar next to wireless toys at keonig but i didnt have a chance to do a speed test. ill do that and lets yall know.

Are you having problems connecting to 4G? I'm using Flipz stock rooted rom without the update, and it connects and is functional at my house in Ewa, but in Aiea and Nuuanu, it shows as connected, but there is no data being transmitted. Even in my house, the 2 bar signal I get constantly drops out to 3G. Pretty annoying. This is my only issue with the phone. Everything else on the EVO is AWESOME!!!

I think Sprint is going to have to throw up a lot more towers in a all 4G cities to have adequate 4G reception.

i get similar results on maui. and yea, i stay on 3g most of the time to save battery and everything runs great. i'd probably use 4g if i tether and need stuff fast or if 3g is too laggy.

i'm just glad i'm off of tmo which only has 3g in lahaina.

Why are people who live in Hawaii complaining about anything? You guys live in a tropical paradise.
All kidding aside though, I was just there for a couple weeks in May for the military. You live in a beautiful area. I'm jealous.

Aloha!

I havent used it that much because it drains my battery way too fast. But I do notice that web pages load faster than on 3g. That is what matters the most to me. It may not be worth the extra load on the battery, but I still feel lucky to have access to 4g.

Below are a few numbers from the SpeedTest app. The odd thing about the downtown test was that I had 3 bars, instead of 1 in central Oahu. The two locations are approximately 14 miles apart. On a side note, I sometimes get faster readings on 3g at these locations.

Downtown Honolulu: 1882 kbps down
Central Oahu: 2316 kpbs down

Besides 4G taking about 10-15 seconds on average to connect, I haven't had any problems connecting. I use it downtown and out in Hawaii Kai area
