Help SMS sending failure (on ORANGE)

Im getting this issue too.
Am with Orange also.

I not noticed if it happens when im on 2G or not.
Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 retries before it gets sent.

In my case it's looking extremely like it's a mast / network issue related to 3G, but it's not such a stretch to think in your case it may be even worse and your location has issues even with GSM aswell maybe ?

Not my location as my Sony Ericsson C905 never had any problems with SMS.

I get this same issue occasionally (also on Orange), along with calls not coming through. Although I seem to have pretty crappy reception in the building at my work, so it could be down to that

That's why mine is strange - my connection is showing as being strong and 3G (often H). One theory we've come up with at work (guesswork ofcourse) is that there are several mobile masts on a high-rise about 100ft away, the High-rise buildings have for the last few months been encased in scaffolding - I'm told the problem started on the company's Orange phones about the same time (only had my desire a month or so), maybe that could be causing some kind of signal hinderance ?

I have had this problem. it seems to occur most when I haveethe network set to auto gsm/wcdma. as soon as I switch to gsm only it works fine. my wife has the same problem with her iphone, which leads me to think it is a problem with orange's wcdma network. it also only seems to be a problem when I'm at home, so again I think it is down to the individual tower. orange are struggling with demand for their 3g network, victims of there own success.

I've had mixed results.

I've had 1x arrive corrupt, and several ones that left me fine but never turned up at the destination.

I've also had some fail when trying to send (Handcent and standard msg app).

Just seems so hit and miss.

I have one too. Orange went through setting up a new one manually with me in an effort to try and correct the issue.

I have the same problem on Orange with texts not sending and calls not coming through, but I wanted to chip in that I had the same problem of calls going straight to voicemail without the phone ringing (I get the "this person called you but left no message" text from Orange) since I joined Orange on my old phone (Sony Ericsson K800) and so I firmly believe it's a problem with their network - I never used any kind of data on that phone until the last few weeks I had it, and the problem had been happening for years by then.

The text message thing is definitely annoying - I love this phone, why is it so temperamental?? Haha.

I experience the same messages on O2.

As previosuly mentioned, when using 2G / GPRS you can't use voice and data at the same time. So if your phone is using data, e.g. background stuff like the weather app, this will cause issues like someone calling you going straight to voicemail without your phone ringing.

All GPRS networks have this limitation.

With 3G networks this problem is solved and you can download and accept calls at the same time. If the status bar at the top shows a large G then you are using GPRS and will encounter this problem.

If you're desperate and it's a problem then turning off Internet while in a GPRS area is the only way to fix this problem. I think connecting to a home Wi-Fi network may also solve the problem.

My problem (and a few others) is slightly different in that if the phone is switched to GSM only mode the problem went away, no failed texts and no calls straight to VM.

I and a co-worker with the same phone/network tested the theory by switching to WCDMA mode (or AUTO) = problem came back, switched to GSM only = problem cured (obviously making sure no data transfer was happening).

So it would seem in my case it's an issue with a local mast.

Hi v interesting thread.
Am a long-standing Orange sub in Surrey, got Desire phone and have (as one person says above), struggled to find it as Great as its writeups.
It just failed to send an SMS and I can't see any resend or outbox. About to try Handcent . Anybody recommend that or warn against it pls?
Ironic because one reason for sending back an SE X10 was couldn't find out how to forward texts.
Slightly wish I'd kept X10 now.....

I've found Handcent to be a great app, and for me personally has absolutely no effect on the problem I was having sending texts (when I had the issue it would happen even on a newly reset desire).

As mentioned it doesn't have an outbox but it will just retry sending showing a failure notification when required. It also has a sent list in the 'more' section.

I've been having all of these problems too. I'm also with Orange but it's an unbranded device. At home (coventry) I get the "unable to send message" error very rarely and always to one particular number.

Yesterday I was in Weston-Super-Mare and nearly chucked my phone in the sea. I noticed at first that despite having 3G my internet wasn't working at all. And then I couldn't send texts because of the above problem. So I turned off mobile internet and wireless, which made no difference. I also tried turning on/off and removing the battery but with no luck.

Then I noticed that I couldn't make any calls. It would say calling, beep at me and end the call; even with full signal. Extremely frustrating.

As soon as I got in the car and started driving home I received a flood of texts including Orange missed call messages. Which means people had been unable to get through to me as well.

I haven't called Orange yet because by the looks of this thread they don't know what the problem is either.

I have a Desire on Orange and have just started having this problem.

I've sent hundreds fine but then yesterday it took 3 attempts to send one SMS. Very annoying.

Along with the annoying loss of 3G and calls going to voicemail. I'm really getting fed up with HTC and/or Android.

I seem to spend more time willing it to work than it actually does.

SMS failures or problems sending happens here in Australia, I don't think it's operator, it's definitely the device, as I also can't get MMS to send at all

I used to have the same issue on my old HTC Touch HD. Thought it was peculiar to some of the ROMs (used to flash a lot of ROMs), but with the same issue on the Desire it's beginning to look like a provider problem.

I have switched to GSM only on my desire (and did so on my HD too) and have had no problems since doing this.
