Help EVO Battery Life vs. Hero (?)

Yea the GSM thing was really weird to me seeing as this is a CDMA banded phone...i guess thats what roaming is? When its looking for att or tmobile towers (gsm)?

yeah, but it can't actually connect to those towers even on roaming since it's a CDMA phone lol

strange indeed

I find it as satisfactory as the Hero. Meaning, not that great...

The really crappy thing is that my EVO can idle like a CHAMP once I removed the widgets with updates (weather clock, friend stream, etc...). If I don't use it much it will have like 70% left when I get home from work.

BUT it seems to die a lot quicker during any sort of use than the Hero did. Browse the net for an hour and it'll eat up 20% of the battery. Run GMaps for 30 minutes and you lose 15%. A phone call seems to eat up like 1% per minute. Maybe it's the bigger screen? That's my only guess. Maybe I'll try the dim backlight rather than auto...

Question about the GSM/CDMA thing. I downloaded "Network" from the app market and this supposedly allows you to see that setting. Mine already said "CDMA." So I left it alone. Is this correct? Or is there a problem with it "thinking" it is CDMA and I still need to do the number fix.

Anyone know?

I tried using the number code and mine was already set to CDMA so I can't tell you for sure that yours is but it could be possible.

how do you go about killing off something like googletalk?

To kill google talk go into the application then menu/more/settings/un-check auto sign in.

Then you HAVE to sign out to leave the application instead of just hitting home or back.

To do this menu/more/sign out

Then google talk should be off...you can double check it in your running processes.

Wow, I think there IS a visual glitch. I just tried the number code and despite "Network" telling me it was CDMA when I did the code it was set to GMA after all. Can't wait to see what the phone is like tomorrow. :)

One more question. This is a one-time fix, right? I don't have to do this every time I turn the phone on?

alright, let me see if i can remember every single thing i've done here...

disable wifi and 4G network notifications by:
menu > Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi settings
uncheck the network notification box.

menu > Settings -> Wireless & networks -> 4G settings

disable always on mobile data by:
menu > Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks

change your wifi sleep policy for when you are connected to wifi by:
menu > Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Wi-Fi Settings
press the menu button again, hit advanced, then wi-fi sleep policy. choose "never" from the pop-up menu.

change GSM auto prl to CDMA auto prl by:
hit Phone (to get into your dialer) > dial *#*#4636#*#*
wait a second (no need to hit dial) and a new window will pop up.
then hit phone information. change what says "GSM auto prl" to "CDMA auto prl"

you can also disable background data and auto-sync but this is not necessary. i'm currently averaging about ~38hrs on one single charge, no joke (with my auto-sync and background data still running.)
to disable background data and auto-sync: (again, not necessary)
menu > settings > accounts and sync > uncheck "background data"

also, turn off all haptic feedback. i hate it personally and it just drains the battery.
menu > settings > sounds and display > uncheck haptic feedback
menu > settings > language and keyboard > touch input > text input > uncheck "vibrate when typing"

oh, with my auto-sync and background data still on, i have my accounts set to sync every 4hrs. email still pushes in a timely manner, though.

but yeah, these are my settings. no task killer, no battery widget. you can find out how much battery is left just by typing in the *#*$4636#*#* into the dialer and then going to the phone info.

i'd consider myself a moderate user. i do texts, download crap from the market, make a few calls here and there, and sometimes i'll randomly just turn the screen on to look at it haha (actually, this is very frequent now that i think about it). it's a nice screen so i can't help myself.

some useful shortcuts i put on my screen were "accounts and sync" and "running services". you should def go into your running services and kill off gtalk and anything sprint related. only things i have running in there right now are:
calendar : obexservice
calendar: connectivityservice
voicemail: cm_service
HTC DM: htcdmservice
HTC IQAgent: agentservice
com.smithmicro.DM: DMServiceApp
Touch Input: touch input
gmail unread count: monitorunreadservice (self installed app)

nothing else should be running unless you're actually using it.

i think that's everything. if someone would like to add anything please feel free to and i'll edit this post. pictures later tonight (prob 2AM EST or later if i'm still up) as proof.

but i pretty much think those are all the tweaks you need to make and you'll be getting similar battery life as myself. hell, if you're a heavy user, you should get no less than 20hrs on one charge. unless you're streaming pandora the whole day or something haha.

and feel free to PM me if you still have questions, as i don't subscribe to every thread i post in and miss things from time to time.

edit: currently at 68% after 12hrs and 3min. since being unplugged.
this is still on track to hit a run time of ~38hrs.
awake time is at about 4hrs and 50min.

I was wondering if you knew how to start the gmail unread count application, or whatever it is. When I first started using my EVO, the gmail icon had a little number on the lower right side that corresponded to how many e-mails were unread in my inbox. Since I installed ATK, the little number has not shown up. Any ideas on how to get it to show up again?? Thanks in advance!!

try launching it from the phone. then i'd send a test email. if that doesn't fix it, i'd just restart the phone.

if it's already set, you should be okay. strange that they would set some up right and not all.

i was about to reboot my phone but i actually wanna see how long it lasts without being plugged in. i bet it'll make it 'till well after i wake up. guess i'll continue my little test.

but yeah, just reboot your phone and check the setting again.

I just wanted to say what a great thread this is. I never had the Hero but I got the Evo a few days ago. I have been playing around and doing battery life tests but learning about the *#*#4636#*#* number has helped greatly. I also uninstalled Advanced Task Killer because it seemed to do more harm than good.

I turned off the auto sign-in for google talk but:

- I keep haptic feedback on
- have had my bluetooth radio on 100% of the time
- browsed the net/facebook
- have gmail, facebook, and flickr all auto syncing
- watched some youtube videos
- tested some quick video taking of my own
- streamed mp3s to my car over bluetooth during a quick (10 minute) car ride.

I'm currently at 40% and my phone has been unplugged for 28 hours and 38 minutes!!

I have seen some people claim they fully charged their phone and then took it off the charger and it died with 6 hours being completely idle. I can only assume those folks have received a defective battery and they should be contacting Sprint and/or HTC to get a new one.

My experience has been excellent battery life once I uninstalled ATK and turned off the google talk stuff. My phone was already set to use CMDA auto (PRL) by default so I didn't need to make that change.

Does turning on 4G significantly alter the battery life? Yes. Do I plan on charging this up every night while I sleep? Yes. Why not -- I'm not going to be using it while I sleep. But it has lasted more than a day on a single charge, so it should be more than capable of lasting me through the day, even under slightly more than moderate usage.

I'm sure I could get better life if I disabled bluetooth but I use it with the Microsoft Sync stuff in my car for hands free calls. I don't care to turn it on and off every time I am getting in or out of the car. But it doesn't seem to matter anyway that bluetooth is on all the time! :D

Thanks for all of the info mrvirginia!

no problem! and i believe the 4G radio does draw lots of power, esp if you don't have a great signal.

i really think that gtalk and all the other crap that runs on people's phones without them realizing it is a big factor when killing those things off.

glad my tutorial is helping people out. i felt it was pretty direct and simple. ;)

Hi
I have an EVO and I was trying to clean house. However I cant get rid of this app which connects constantly. "Amazon Mp3 store" I would very much like to get rid of it. Any suggestions?
PS. how do you prevent Voice Dialer from popping up also?

you can't kill them from running services?
if you're talking about after restarting your phone, everything starts back up and you have to go in and kill stuff off again.

MrVirginia seeing how I don't have a clue about droid (that's why I'm here) along with the gsm/cdma thing. I will ask this seeing how this evo is supposed to be cdma and not gsm if I were to do the fix you speak of it will not adversely affect my phones connectivity pertaining to calls and data at all or by what you said may depending on the service I have in my area? Also if I do this fix it needs to be done every time you turn the phone off and on again? Sorry but I need lamens terms I'm just a dumb fireman lol. Also what is HTC sense that you mention? Thanks dan

no, it won't effect the phones connectivity at all.
you don't need to apply the fix every time you reboot like some are stating. at least i haven't had to and i've rebooted quite a few times due to installing different PRL's.

HTC Sense UI is the user interface that comes pre-loaded on the Evo and is what you see. it can be turned off, in which case you can do the stock Android or some other type of launcher.

dear forum,
i have a screenie to show you. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7471907@N06/4722818805/
say... does that number for tws seem a tad high to you guys? i am at work rite and am getting decent reception. but for the past 5.5 hours i was at home where i get little to no reception. one bar mostly. i already did the *#*#4636#*#* thing and i implemented other battery tweaks suggested by mrvirginia.
i am a noob and evo is my 1st android phone.
any light that is shed upon this matter will be appreciated.
tia.

yes, that's a bit high lol wow. i was having horrible issues with phone calls at home. every time my gf would call and i'd answer, it would automatically drop the call before i could even say hello. i also did a call test from my home phone to my Evo. took a crazy amount of rings on the home phone before the Evo even rang once. after changing the PRL, i instantly saw better reception results, the phone doesn't drop a call when someone calls, and when i call from the home phone, it rings once, then my Evo rings.

not sure if posting a hack, such as the one i'm referring to, is appropriate for the forums here. so, what i'll say is just do a google search for "techknowfile's - Hack the HTC EVO - 3G w/o Sprint EVDO coverage".

there's lots of PRL's besides the ones in the main post on xda. i'm running 40050 which gets better results than the recommended ones. believe me, i've tried A LOT of different ones.

ty MR.VA.
i'll give it a shot.
i can go into settings and into updates. and do a prl update that way. but i guessing that will not enhance the reception? and can i use the same prl (40050) as u mentioned in above post? or does it depend on where i live?

i am at xda and i found the instructions to apply the prl change. i found a few including 0001 but not 40050.
edit. i just found a place where i can download 40050 prl. its with verizon and sprint evdo roaming. i get 1 bar from sprint in my area but i know verizon coverage is much better here. so does that mean with this prl, i can tap into verizon's signal and get better reception? if so, does that affect the voice calls or data reception. or both?
sorry too many questions. i am both scared and excited.
