Does power saver just change the data connection stuff, or does it have any affect on performance?

I've seen both views expressed on this issue in other threads, and I was wondering what some people though about battery conditioning the droid x. I'm getting mine today or tomorrow and want to know what to do right out of the box to maximize my battery.

I haven't seen a thread for this yet, but can't we try and petition Google to force Motorola/Verizon to keep the Droid X open to developers? Both Motorola and Verizon are part of Google's Open Handset Alliance, yet they are working to keep hardware locked to developers. Probably not feasible...
