titanium backup - restore accidentally deleted system .apk

la0x1f

Lurker
So I foolishly removed a bunch of bloatware without doing any backups, and everything went fine except for one thing - I accidentally deleted the Download manager, so now I can't install anything from the play store.

I'm rooted, I have busybox, es file explorer, terminal, can install from unknown sources, etc...

What I need to know is, how can I get a copy of DownloadManager.apk?

Should it work to just drop the file into /system/apps?

thanks all, -la0x1f

phone: samsung galaxy exhibit sgh-t599n metropcs
android version: 4.1.2 stock

Yeah i think if you put it in system/app, set the right permissions and install it there it should work.
Id give you a copy of mine but im on 4.4.2 so i dont know if it would work.
Good luck :thumbup:

ok, after a bit of a hassle, I was able to get everything working again.

1) I downloaded a stock rom from xda-developers forum for my device;
2) i converted system.img to a raw img using simg2img;
3) I mounted the raw image on a loopback device and grabbed the files SecDownloadProvider* from system/app;
4) I copied those over to my phone and rolled back the google play store updates and cleared all the caches

now it works again, phew ...

hope this helps somebody

Should work if you can find it. If for some reason, it doesn't get treated as a system app when reinstalled, use TiBu to convert it to one.

Also, I know you said you didn't do any backups ahead of time. Just making sure you didn't have a old nandroid backup you could revert to that maybe you forgot about? Just a thought, that'd get it back too.

Oops, ninja'd by the OP. Glad you got it back in shape. :)

nope, but next time i'll definitely do a backup ...

the only reason i didn't backup with tibu was because google moved the 'install from unknown sources' to a different menu than where it said it would be, so i assumed that metropcs had disabled it somehow and figured that I was just uninstalling a bunch of bloatware anyway so who cares ...

thankfully it was a minor annoyance only and nothing got bricked! next time i'll definitely do backups.

Yeah man always have a nandroid before doin anything to the system.
Glad you got there in the end and gained some more experience and thanks for sharing :)

What deleted them and do you have a backup?

In the absence of any more information the simplest answer is to reflash the ROM (if you are using a custom ROM) or reflash with stock software (or a stock ROM backup if you can find one) if not. If you reflash completely to stock get all of your backups sorted first as that will unroot you and wipe everything.

To say more than that we'll need to know more about what happened and about your device (what model, whether you have a custom recovery and whether you ever took a backup with the recovery being the most important questions).
