Will this code harm any device in any kind of way?

I doubt it: Frisco certainly wouldn't have posted it if he thought that was possible (if you didn't meet him when he was active here, he was one of our top people for a number of years).

I'd not met this code before, so just tried it myself, and to my surprise I received the "checkin succeeded" message. Since it's 2 years since the last official update for my phone, and I'm running a custom ROM anyway, it naturally didn't do anything else. If I notice anything wrong in the next couple of days I'll let you know.

Yeah, this thread is from quite some time back (2012-era ) and the "checkin" functionality has basically been replaced by the "Check for Update" function in your Settings -> About phone -> System updates -> Check for updates sequence.
